1. “Of lesssionpropercorrectthisknowstand/ortiveacananyonecourse,whomanagelittleobjecpoliticallegalhinkingthatistheanddeciregardofhowone feels about the subject of abortion. Con trary to some of the hysteria coming from Democrats, Roe v. Wade has always been suspect as far as its Constitu tional validity. There is no Constitutional right to abor tion and there is a real mat ter for debate about when life begins and whether or not the rights of the unborn are as valid as the rights of the mother. We should really have adults who can handle common sense and mutual respect discussing and de bating what our policies should look like, not political manipulators and activists willing to lie to gin up their own base. The truth about this decision is simply that it undoes an unconstitutional protection for abortion and instead transfers the authority where it belongs to state govern ments to make their own policy on the subject. It does not undermine the status quo in Connecticut in any way. Indeed, it’s clear from the reactions from members of both parties, there is zero chance that any significant change in abortion law will occur in Connecticut in the short term. It’s sad that this subject is so overly politicized by people in politics and the media. The vast majority of people in this country consider themselves as I do pro-life but unwilling to eliminate all abortions whatsoever. In stead, preferring to eliminate late-term abortions or using the practice as birth control and including checks that will help to reduce criminal behavior and abusers like a requirement for parental no tification.I’mhopeful that turning the decision-making over to the states will result in better policy that more accurately resembles how citizens feel locally rather than one broad national brush that ig nores the views of so many.”
2. “I believe that both Texas law and our response to it in Connecticut are up for much legal wrangling and will both be challenged in higher courts. The short answer is yes, I don’t believe Con necticut has any obligation to assist another state in the prosecution of their laws, as suming we do not consider the offense a crime in our state. That said, I do believe we have an obligation to as sist federal authorities when they have jurisdiction, such as immigration law. Con necticut has created safe harbor laws that prohibit the assistance of federal ICE au thorities and I believe those are void constitutionally.”

Many people suffer from anxiety, and with today’s diverse external triggers combined with personal or internal factors, it is on the rise. These days, people are often looking for ways to cope with their condition without using medication. Some are turning to Acupuncture care to help successfully manage their anxiety. Acupuncture care is an all-natural and gentle solution without side effects. The goal of Acupuncture care for anxiety is to alleviate the underlying issue. Acupuncture treatments trigger the release of oxytocin and cortisol, which are good and beneficial hormones. These hormones have the potential to reduce stress, boost positive feelings, and improve quality of life. Acupuncture care for anxiety also improves sleep and relaxes the body, both bonuses. One undeniably great benefit of Acupuncture for anxiety is the happiness it can bring. While this may sound pretty unrealistic, the treatment can actually stimulate what we call happy hormones. These include cortisol, oxytocin, and neurotensin, which are responsible for the regulation of stress levels. To schedule an appointment at Raya Clinic, please call 860-621-2225. Our clinic is located at 200 Queen St., Southington. P.S. Anxiety is a condition involving both the mind and the body.

Southington&PlainvilleCitizen|southingtoncitizen.comFriday,August19,2022 A3 guarantee that this treat ment would work. Despite the risks we opted for the procedure and waited. At our follow up appointment, the doctors reported that the fluid was back. We were then told that there were no more tests and that our options were to termi nate the pregnancy or wait for a miscarriage. Doctors calculated that we would lose the baby over the next two days. As people of Chris tian faith, we opted to let na ture taken its course. The two days turned into two of the longest most painful months of our lives. While the dying baby devel oped, we attended weekly doctors appointments with no new prognosis. My wife had to endure comments and questions at the grocery store, at church, and at the mall: ‘How nice it will be for your daughter to have a sib ling,’ ‘Are you having a boy or a girl?’ ‘What name have you picked out?’ ‘You look Allgreat.’along we knew that the baby was going to die. Our Catholic priest told us that the strength of our marriage was most important. He told us that if we chose to have an abortion in an effort to ensure that our circum stances would not destroy our relationship, he would offer us confession. But we persisted. Preeclampsia set in before a lengthy labor and the baby was born at 32 weeks. We held her for 10 minutes as she suffocated and Despitedied.the pain and emo tional toll during those many weeks of uncertainty and de spair, my wife and I endured because we had our faith and the unconditional sup port of our families... not ev eryone has that. We made a very difficult choice that we felt was best for us. It wasn’t an easy choice and no one- not our doctors, families, priest, or anyone else- told us what to do. It was the most difficult decision of our lives, but we had a choice. We are dismayed at the re cent Supreme Court ruling overturning a Roe v Wade. The rhetoric is divisive and does not acknowledge the complicated, difficult cir cumstances that surround a woman’s choice. Opponents have reduce choice to a whimsical or convenient de cision, and they focus on the graphic details of late term abortions, which for the record, I don’t support. I stand behind a woman’s right to choose. You can judge me on this position. You can judge me on how my wife and I handled our situation. You can judge me on my morals and values, but from experience, I can say with confidence- without hesitation - that no one but the pregnant woman - not a legislator, not a judge, not a news network, and certainly not a critic on social media, should be making any choice for anyone.”
2. “As for the Safe Harbor component of the recent law that was passed by the Gen eral Assembly, I believe that a person's medical choices should be protected and kept confidential regardless of procedure. Doctors oper ating legal practices in CT should also be protected from the laws of other states.” Republican Tony Morrison did not respond for com ment. 22nd House (Southington, Plainville, From A2 Candidates See Candidates, A4
RebeccaFarmington)Martinez, Demo crat 1. “The minute I heard Roe V. Wade was overturned, I felt anxious, angry, and deeply saddened. Women should be making the deci sions about their own bod ies, not the government. This decision will not stop abortions this will only stop safe abortions. Women will die as a result of unsafe abortions and dangerous pregnancies. This attack on women’s rights impacts ev ery single one of us Demo crat, Republican, and Unaf filiated voters alike. Some say this doesn’t impact CT. We are safe in CT right now. We must make sure we stay that way by electing candi dates that will strongly sup port a woman’s right to 2.choose.”“Asanurse, I fully support Connecticut’s Safe Harbor Law. Access to safe abortion is a priority. This law is nec essary to protect both wom en and healthcare providers.”

Justice White argued the appropriate mechanism for resolving the issue of abortion was through the legislative process, a posi tion echoed by the late Jus tice Ruth Bader Ginsburg during a 2013 Q and A at the Chicago Law School, a pro cess that eventually creates a consensus. As Justice Alito noted in his opinion the Court’s 1973 opinion has only inflamed debate and deepened division rather than creating consensus on the issue. The Connecticut General Assembly has al ready passed law regarding Connecticut’s position on the issue so the Supreme Court’s decision will have little effect in the state as consensus, at least in Con necticut, has been achieved. 8 ways to save on back to school shopping

By Caitlin Houston Special to the Record-Journal Have you started back to school shopping? This year is supposed to be one of the most expensive yet for school supplies. We have just a couple weeks left of summer here in Connecti cut, but I’ve already started shopping to save money. I like to shop for the new school year over the course of a few weeks (sometimes months). Instead of shoving all of our shopping into one or two days, I shop smart by waiting for sales to make Thispurchases.yearAiley starts kinder garten and Annabelle starts third grade in the upper ele mentary school so they both need new backpacks. I am so happy I waited until their favorite back packs and lunchboxes went on Mysale.favorite stores are having sales: pricier, high-quality items at 40 per cent off and less expensive but good quality end of sea son finds. We will buy a few warm weather outfits for the new school year, but will wait to buy cool weather items until mid-September. There is no point in pur chasing long sleeves, pants, and sweaters when it could be 80-degrees the first few weeks of school 8 Tips for Frugal Back to School Shopping 1. Take stock of what you have at home Did you buy a big box of glue sticks last year and shove them in a closet somewhere? I know I did. Amazon always has in expensive items in bulk we need throughout the year (or donate to the classroom) that I stock up on.
Raymond J. Lavoie, Sr. PLAINVILLE- Leosina Celli, 91, of Plainville, passed away peacefully at the Hospital of Central CT New Britain Campus on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. She is now reunited with her devoted husband, Elio Celli, who predeceased her. Leosina was born on August 27, 1930 in Corvara, Italy, daughter to the late Gabrielle and Maria (Ciccone) Giuliani. In 1954, Leosina immigrated to Venezuela where she and her husband started a family and were blessed with four children. The family immigrated to the United States and settled in Plainville, where they made their forever home. Leosina, a woman of strength, courage, and determination went through many life obstacles always with a great sense of humor and optimism. Though she traveled through countries, barely able to speak or understand the languages, she always succeeded and made many friendships along the way. Leosina was a homemaker, tending to the home and raising children, but the loss of her husband found her working several jobs to support her family. She was strong-willed and a hard-worker and did not let anything stop her. If there was anyone ever in need, Leosina would lend out a helping hand and was always very generous. She had a passion for cooking and loved to share her recipes, passing down many of them to the next generation. You never left her house without a full stomach and a great story to remember. Leosina was a very special lady, full of love, generosity and a great sense of care. Above all, family was the center of her world and she found the most joy in being surrounded by her loved ones and especially her grandchildren. She will be missed sorely as her family carries on her legacy of her love, humor, optimism, and generosity. Leosina is survived by her son, Gianni Celli and his wife, Xiomara, her daughter, Angela (Celli) Delgado (predeceased by her son-in-law, Carlos Delgado), her son, Adriano Celli and his wife, Silvia Mendez, her son, Henry Celli and his wife, Jennifer; her grandchildren, Stefano and Gianfranco Celli, Juan Carlos Delgado and his wife, Yasmin, Mariangela and Andres Delgado, Adriana and Silvana Celli, and Sofia and Francesca Celli; and her greatgrandchildren, Santiago and Sebastian Delgado, all of whom she loved dearly and completely. Family and friends gathered on Friday, August 12, 2022 at the Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad Street, Plainville, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 94 Broad Street, Plainville, at 11:00 AM. Burial followed in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Plainville. The new system includes a par ent portal so families can access an individualized education plan, or IEP. The language translation feature allows fami lies to access information in their native language. CTSEDS will also help planning and placement teams (PPTs) “in navigating the special edu cation process, leading to the development of high quality IEPs for Connecticut’s stu dents,” according to the state Department of education web “site.Inaddition to developing a universal system, the IEP was modified with some significant changes,” said Aimee Turner, assistant superintendent for special education for Walling ford Public Schools. “The IEP it self is easier to read and much more parent friendly although the content remains the same as the components of the IEP are federally mandated.”
The state Department of Edu cation’s Bureau of Special Edu cation partnered with the Mas sachusetts-based Public Con sulting Group on the system, known as CT-SEDS. SEDS stands for Special Education Data System. The project began about two years ago to support “goals and vision of developing a compre hensive statewide special edu cation data system (CT-SEDS) to make available to all of its lo cal school district partners in 2022,” according to the Con necticut State Department of Education’s website.
Carey, director of pupil personnel services for Cheshire Public Schools, said she thinks the new format is “more parent-friendly.” “The previous forms had lots of information that was written in very small writing,” Carey said.
By Jessica Record-JournalSimmsstaff A new online system for special education data, including indi vidualized education plans, is set to launch this school year. The new system promis es greater access for parents and school staff and more con sistency across school districts.
The document in the system will be in a different format, said Rebecca Cavallaro, director of pupil services for Southington Public Schools. Southington schools have used a third party vendor’s system, while the new system will be used statewide. “It will really allow for greater consistency across the state and throughout districts,” Cavallaro said. “So if a student moves from Southington to Water bury, that information just car ries over and everybody is in the same system, which is kind of Robin-Annecool.”
Staff training, glitches The Public Consulting Group provided each school district with training for a certain num ber of staff members that will train other staff. The Walling ford and Cheshire school dis tricts were able to train 15 staff members this summer, while Southington has 25 staff mem bers who are trainers.
“During the summer, the state put out multiple trainings. They are virtual,” Carey said. “The staff that were identified to be trainers registered and were able to then access the training. So they go through the training and then as a district, we ll put together a training packet, like a training presentation, and then that will be shared with all the trainers. Then they will be train ing smaller groups within each building.

The council plans to send the purchase to the plan ning commission for re view. Improvements and the purchase of land re quires planning review al though there have been no objections from planners concerning purchases in the past several years. After the commission gives a recommendation, the purchase will return to the council for final approval. Town mulls buying land near park entrance
By Jesse Record-JournalBuchananstaff SOUTHINGTON Town leaders are considering the purchase of two undevel oped properties totaling six acres near the entrance to Panthorn Park. Buying the land would pre serve the open area around the park entrance, prevent ing houses from being built on the two rear lots at 425 and 429 Burritt St. The Town Council and the Planning and Zoning Com mission are considering the purchase of both prop erties for a total of Paul$350,000.Chaplinsky, a Town Council Republican and open space acquisition committee chairman, said it is a good opportunity to buy land adjacent to a town park before a devel “oper. We’re very excited,” he said. “It’s really good for the town.”
Avoiding develop ment Town officials estimate that a builder could fit at least five houses on the two “parcels.Wewent through the (planning) process and they definitely could put a road in there and put a handful of houses in there,” Chaplinsky said. The house on the corner of Burritt Street and the park entrance will remain with the landowners, the D’Agostino family rela tives of the town’s former police chief Philip D’Agostino. The family will keep the property with the house and is only selling the two parcels behind it. Chaplinsky credited the family with giving the town an opportunity to buy the “land. This is good for the town but it’s also recognition for the family that they wanted to keep it open space,” he said. “It think they’re giving us a fair opportunity given the fact that it could be de Chrisveloped.”Palmieri, a Town Council Democrat and an open space acquisition committee member, sup ported the purchase. Buy ing land near existing town parcels can be a major benefit, he said, referenc ing the Southington DriveIn land which when it was purchased was not part of the adjacent Recreation “Park.Adding open space is ben eficial to the town in many ways. Adding open space near existing town property offers even more opportu nities,” Palmieri said. Planning review

By Jeffery Record-JournalKurz staff I’ve been thinking a lot about books lately because I’m trying to get rid of them. It’s awful. I put a pile of books into a box and tape up the box and almost immedi ately want to undo the tape and open the box to make sure that, indeed, these are books I want to get rid of. What’s the matter with me? I like the idea of putting books out there, “into the wild” as they say bookcrossing.com.atI like lit tle libraries. And I know that things are just things, and books are things, so you can get rid of them and not suf fer great loss. But, I’ll be honest. As much as I like the idea of spread ing books around that’s not why I’m trying to get rid of them. I’m trying to declutter. And I’m certain there are lots of folks who like books, and read them, more than I do. And I’m pretty sure there were a lot of them gathering in Southington the other “night.Iwas excited to see people so passionate about the Sobooks.”said Tina Riccio, chair woman of the Southington library board, about a recent meeting in which people were talking about the li Southingtonbrary. is in a tough spot, through no fault of its own, really. Voters approved expanding the library at a referendum last November, a great move by a savvy elec torate that recognized the need to update a library from the 1970s that doesn’t have the things libraries need to have these days, like handicap accessibility. But as we have learned par ticularly in the last few years, one moment changes into the next and after a while they seem to have less and less to do with one another. At the start of the pandemic we were obsessing about washing our hands, for in Instance.thecase of the Southing ton library, the $17 million approved by voters is not go ing to cut it. It was enough money then, in the ancient days of November 2021, but the nearly 30,000 square feet of library space that seemed not a problem is no longer in reach. Now, as Jesse Buchanan has been report ing for the Record-Journal, it’s down to about 24,000 square feet. That must be painful, partic ularly for the enthusiasts who understand how well a library can serve a town. It still can, but the work to get there has gotten a lot harder thanks to inflation and con struction costs and … well, you know what’s going on. I’ve been thinking about this and I don’t know what to do. There’s some worry over the $1 million grant money from the State Library Board, as in whether any significant change will risk it, but the greater question involves whether to go back to voters. There’s some support for an other referendum, but there’s something about that that sounds like asking a ref if you’ve really scored a touchdown after you’ve scored one. People can take a jaded per spective when it comes to politics, but in the recent R-J story two candidates were offering good observations. Chris Poulos, a library board member who is the Demo cratic candidate in the 81st House District race, was talking about a public hear ing “in an effort to ensure transparency.” Opponent Re publican Tony Morrison, a member of the finance board, said “the one option we don’t have right now is to raise taxes because of infla tion.” Hard not to agree with either point. Let’s hope the upcoming election helps focus the situ ation. With difficult issues you need all the help you can get, and this is an im portant one. Reach Jeffery Kurz at jkurz@ record-journal.com.
