Chris Denorfia is coming home. The former Major League Baseball player from Southington has been named the new manager of the Hartford Yard Goats, who announced the hire on Tuesday.

“It was obviously a special opportunity for me professionally and careerwise, but for my family as well,” Denorfia said Tuesday afternoon. “It takes a toll on you traveling around with this game.

Kevin Curtiss, chairman of the library's Board of Directors, said those plans as presented would still be in their early concept phases. The purpose of the next community meetings, to be held at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., would be to gather more public input as those plans are finalized, Curtiss said.
Libary Board of Directors member Joanne Kelleher, who chairs its library planning committee, said a large cross-section of the community, in terms of democraphics, responded to the survey.

Author talk Wednesday, Jan. 16, 7 p.m. True crime author Anne K. Howard will give a talk at Southington Public Library about her book “His Garden: Conversations with a Serial Killer.” The book probes the complicated and conflicted mind of William Devin Howell – Connecticut's most prolific serial killer. Register at southingtonlibrary.org by clicking on the events calendar or call the Reference Desk at 860-6280947, option 5.
Maritimes culture
This is a special case for our rescue. Milo, 6 years old, at left, and Emma, 15, lost their owner to cancer on Christmas Day. We previously posted these pets last spring in hopes of finding a placement prior to their owner passing. Now their situation is more pressing. These two kitties were her babies, and she wanted them to find a good home together. Both cats are very friendly, playful and lovable. Emma will sleep with you and has soft rabbit-like fur. Milo is a big boy at 16 pounds. He is very vocal and loves to be cuddled. They are both vetted and in good health. Please consider giving them a second chance. For more information and an application contact southingtonanimalrescue@gmail.com.
Wednesday, Jan. 22, 6:30 p.m. This presentation will educate and entertain participants about unique, often unknown aspects of the three Canadian Maritimes provinces - Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick as they relate to the U.S. The connections between the U.S. and the Canadian Maritimes go back centuries and exist even today. Come explore the history, culture, cuisine and unique qualities of the three provinces. The U-10 and U-12 racers from Mount Southington started the season Sunday, Jan. 5 at Mohawk Mountain. The Mount Southington Ski Team racers had a great start to the season in a GS. Madison Kazimir was the top local racer, finishing in 4th place out of 65 girls. Ainhize Sanhacoloma finished 6th, with Alessa Lattanzi in 21st, followed by Julia Calderaro in the 23rd spot.
Also this week, the UConn ski team was to host the opening MacConnell Division race at Wildcat Mountain, New Hampshire on Thursday and Friday.
Over on the boys GS course the Southington team also did well. Max Sena-Goldschmidt finished first out of

Local racers had some good results in regional races over the Jan. 4-5 weekend, too. Former Southington High racer Matt Chambers, now at UConn, opened the season taking third place out of 110 racers in the Schaefer Cup GS at Berkshire East Resort.
On the high school schedule, Cheshire Academy, Cheshire High School and the Blue Knights were scheduled to race at Mount Southington, Thursday, Jan. 9.
Southington High coach Jim Richert says he feels good about the team’s performance this season. “With the results our racers had in Southington High racer Faith the pre-season events I think Richert was the top local we will be very competitive

Among the non-race items on the schedule is another Demo Day put on by Suburban Ski at Mount Southington on Sunday, Jan. 19.
The men are racing along on World Cup courses, but in a lot tighter pack than the women. Shiffrin is skiing so well, that as long as she stays

AutoZone seeks 2nd location in town By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
AutoZone is looking to open a second location in town on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike. Local builder John Susco, who owns the land proposed for the store, said development of that section of Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike will be a “shot in the arm for Southington.” Several businesses near the highway on that stretch have been recently approved, including a Wendy’s location in front of the AMC Theater. A nearby Dunkin’ Donuts was also recently renovated.
Susco said he’s owned the two properties on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike for about five years. He tore down two dilapidated houses to make way for Auto Zone, a national auto parts chain. The property is adjacent to The Home Depot and across the street from the AMC. “We think it’s a great spot,” Susco said. “It’s going to be a nice commercial development.” The Planning and Zoning Commission will take up the proposal at its meeting Jan. 21. “It bodes well, it’s a national franchise,” said Lou See Auto Zone, A9

Campaign filing for donors amended None of the donors, who each gave the maximum of $2,000 allowed by state law, had donated to local campaigns in
recent years. Two didn’t vote in November’s election that saw Republicans regain a majority of the council. One has never voted, according to the town clerk.
Two donors, Jeffrey Pabst and Maria Melillo, didn’t have occupation or employer information included in the last financial filing before town elections in November. That information is required by the State Elections Enforcement Commission due to the size of the donation.
Republican treasurer Johanna Furgalack said last month that the final filing before an election has the shortest deadline and is sometimes amended after the deadline to include missing information. She said the employer and occupation information wasn’t provided by donors in time for the filing deadline. Other donors on that filing also had information amended in a filing submitted last month.
‘Accurate and complete’ Steve Kalkowski, Republican town chairman, said Friday that Furgalack went back to all four donors to confirm and complete required information. “Now we’re completely accurate and complete,” he said. “I’m glad that that was done.” At the Town Council meeting last month, Democratic See Campaign filing, A12

who drafted him out of Wheaton in the 19th round of the 2002 MLB Draft. Denorfia, an outfielder, also played with the Oakland A’s, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs. This past season, he was quality assurance coach on manager Joe Maddon’s staff. In Hartford, Denorfia replaces Warren Schaeffer, who managed the Yard Goats in 2018 and 2019. Denorfia’s batting and pitching coaches are yet to be named. “Chris brings a unique set of experiences to our organization having recently played several years of Major League Baseball and working this past season as a Major League staff member in another organization,” Colorado Rockies Assistant GM / Player Development Zach Wilson said. “These experiences, along with his passion for the game, eagerness to grow, local upbringing and strong character combine to make him a great fit for the Colorado Rockies as manager of the Hartford Yard Goats.”

“I’m excited about the learning process that I’m going to go through,” Denorfia said. “I have such a great love for this game and I have a couple of years experience now post-playing, both in the coaching and the front office
capacity. This is sort of where my heart was leading me — to take more of a leadership role — and this opportunity is very special.” He said he’s not sure what type of manager he will be yet. “I’m interested in seeing what develops and what I turn into,” Denorfia said. “I have my philosophy from the game and the way I think it should be played. I’ve learned from and have been exposed to such great managers that I hope I’ve picked up a couple of tips and hints from them and kind of sprinkle in a little of what I am as a person. “We will see what happens. I just love this game so much and I feel a great debt to it just for all that it’s done for me and my family. I feel a responsibility to pass on what I’ve learned.” Denorfia made his first trip to Dunkin’ Donuts Park last week and he’s excited about working at the facility this season. “What a special place,” Denorfia said. “I’ve been to dozens and dozens of minor league ballparks and that’s, if not the best, is among the top three that I’ve seen in the country. It’s a special place with the location and the visuals that you get. It’s really just a top-notch facility for the players and for the coaches and for the fans. I feel really lucky to be able to go to work there.”

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S MALE & FEMALE NOMINEES sponsored by: MIDDLESEX COMMUNITY COLLEGE
NICK MARINGOLA
HAILEY BRUNEAU
With All-State goalie Nick Maringola back in net, the Cheshire Rams know they can push the attack on the ice this winter. They’ve done just that, scoring 23 goals in their first six games. But it’s been Maringola’s work at the other end that’s been crucial in Cheshire’s 4-2 start. Through those first six games, the senior has a blocker-bending 216 saves, including a career-high 48 in back-to-back games against Sheehan on Dec. 30 and WMRP last Saturday.
Hail to Hailey Bruneau, who is playing well at both ends of the floor. Through Lyman Hall’s first four games, the veteran senior, who is heading to Division III Rochester, was averaging 9.0 points a game. More than that, she’s crashing the boards and playing aggressive defense. At Rocky Hill on Dec. 27, Bruneau grabbed nine boards and blocked 12 shots. That’s no misprint: 12 blocks. Bruneau had five blocks and eight rebounds Friday at Sheehan.
JACOB VECCHIO
HAYLEIGH LAGASE
Jacob Vecchio was an All-CCC Division I lineman for Southington football in the fall and he’s ridden the success into wrestling. Lining up at 220 pounds for the Blue Knights, Vecchio has notched some early accomplishments on his belt. By placing fourth in his weight class, Vecchio was the highest Southington finisher at the prestigious George Bossi Holiday Tournament in Lowell, Mass. He had the match-clinching pin at Wethersfield last Thursday.
And hail to Hayleigh Lagase, who hit a pair of 3-pointers and came up with a key late steal to help the Lady Titans defeat Lyman Hall 40-37 on Friday night. The junior, a returning starter from Sheehan’s Class M state runner-up team, scored a season-high 21 points against Hand on Dec. 20. Lagase followed that with 16 points against Farmington in the finals of the North Haven holiday tournament, which earned her spot on the All-Tournament Team.
RASHAWN WILSON
JA’LEXIA WEST
Coming off of Friday night’s 46-40 win over Newington, the Maloney boys basketball team entered the week at 4-2. A driving force has been Rashawn Wilson. The senior put up a team-high 15 points against Newington, going 7-for-8 from the line in the process. Wilson also had a season-high 22 points in Maloney’s 58-50 win over Berlin just before Christmas. He was averaging 10.5 points a game heading into Tuesday’s game in Middletown.
OK, it’s been a rough start for the Platt girls basketball team. The Panthers lost their first five games. Ja’lexia West, though, has been playing like a champ. The 5-foot-10 junior scored 59 points and grabbed 50 rebounds over that opening five-game stretch, which means she’s averaging a double-double. West had 17 points and 15 rebounds against Conard on Dec. 20. She followed that with 10 points and 12 rebounds Friday night at Bloomfield.

Make the commitment, take charge of your health By Terry Sutton Special to The Citizen
help in the fight against cardiovascular disease”
I recently went to have my annual physical and had all the usual tests.
I’ve known this information for much of my adult life and in general, but clearly knowledge isn’t quite enough.
Most came out with positive (as in good) and reassuring results with the exception of two concerning and familiar culprits. For the past several years I’ve tested with both slightly high levels of blood sugar and LDL cholesterol. While I am not in the immediate danger zone, I’ve known about this for years and have made slight changes to combat the situation: Cutting out soda, not adding sugar to tea and coffee and maintaining good physical activity levels. However, it seems that these
changes may not be enough. Shane Lockwood, director of health of the PlainvilleSouthington Regional Health District, knows that high cholesterol and blood sugar are major health issues. Here’s what he said. “It’s important to remember that according to the Connecticut Department of Public Health statistics, heart disease and stroke are the first and fifth leading cause of death in the state. Eating healthy foods and having a non-sedentary lifestyle will
SUDOKU
I’m trying to figure out the next step. As an avid walker/hiker who over the years has summited many of the highest mountains in Connecticut and New Hampshire, I’m definitely not sedentary. Plus, I workout at the gym twice a week on average lifting weights and engaging in cardiovascular exercise. I walk whenever possible and that includes taking the stairs instead of elevators and escalators. That seems pretty good, overall.
“All carbs turn to sugar in the body, some much faster than others,” Hoffman says. “There is something called the Glycemic Index which is a rating scale that goes 0100. “One hundred is white bread. That’s the worst. This will shoot blood sugars through the roof. White bread is actually worse than table sugar.”
Josh Foley, a spokesman for SEEC, said no complaints about the donations had been filed as of Friday.
R225140v2
Kalkowski said the party would provide any information required by SEEC, but said there’s been no request yet for additional filings. “Chris Palmieri should be focusing on how to work
with the majority and not to try to undermine us all the time,” Kalkowski said. In the revised filing, Pabst is listed as an employee of FF Screw Products, a company owned by Fragola. Melillo is listed as working for F-K Rod Ends, another Fragola company. One of the four $2,000 donors, Theresa Zacchio, was listed as retired in the original filing. She’s listed as an FF Screw Products employee in the amended filing. John Lobb, the fourth donor, is engaged to Melillo.

Frank Fragola and his attorney, Bryan Meccariello, declined to comment.
Development plan pending Fragola is proposing that the town add his Laning Street land to the sewer district, allowing him to tie a proposed development into the town’s water and sewer system. In exchange, Fragola is asking that 30 acres he owns at 1316 West St., which is within the sewer district, be removed to offset any impact from the Laning Street development. Town officials devised the sewer map to limit growth and the subsequent strain on the town’s water pollution control plant.
Democrats opposed it while Republicans supported the deal. The issue returned to the council agenda late last year, but no action has been taken yet. 225292

cessed or broken down a food is the quicker the blood sugar rise. An orange is a good thing but when you pulverize it into juice, it’s sugar. The more you cook a food, the easier it breaks down, too. Like raw veggies are always slower than cooked veggies.”
STUFF TO SELL?
I’m not likely to spend money on junk, if it’s free … well, it’s a lot harder to say no.
Fruit juices are not often found in my refrigerator but I do consume them as a healthier option to soda. For me, the months of October to late January are always the most difficult time to avoid sugar. From Halloween through Christmas I’m likely to find free candy available in people’s households, places of business, and public buildings. While
Much of the medical literature links higher consumption of sugar to higher amounts of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. I know that if I cut down on the sugar and high carbohydrate foods I’ll get better numbers at my next check-up. It comes down to choosing between short-term gratification or long-term health woes.
Shane Lockwood reminds people that maintaining a proper diet, and exercise, are important, but to take other precautions. “I encourage all residents to have regular visits with their primary care physician for regular check-ups,” Lockwood said. “Take medicine as prescribed. Take advantage of the parks and walking trail in our towns to get active. Benefits can be seen with as little as 150 minutes per week of walking for exercise.”

Good advice. I’ll be walking those trails in town and hopefully watching those high numbers go down by sticking to a healthier diet. Do you have a topic for Seen & Heard? Write to the editor at news@thesouthingtoncitizen.com.
