Council vote puts purchase of corner closer to reality By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Town leaders are considering how to manage a downtown Plantsville parcel that could become public property. This week the Town Council voted to send the proposed purchase of 766 S. Main St. to the Planning and Zoning Commission for a recom-

Police said Luis Medina, 22, was shot in the calf. He was treated and released, Lt. Keith Egan said in a release Monday. The shooting occurred at about 10:35 p.m. on Rethal Street. The victim was driven to Bristol Hospital by family members, police said.

restrictions on the property would be maintained. Town Manager Mark Sciota said uses for the land would be recorded on the deed if the land is sold but could be changed by a vote of a Town Council majority. “In this case it was important for the property owners and the council members that we spell that out,” Sciota said. No plans for the corner lot have been confirmed but town leaders have talked about a low wall with ”Plantsville” written on it, tables, chairs, lights and other features to improve the cor-

Southington resident gets a furry new best friend Make-A-Wish Connecticut granted 14-year-old Gabriella Bekker’s wish to have a husky puppy. Gabriella is a courageous teen who battled through chemo treatments with strength and tenacity since being diagnosed with lymphoma in February. But with COVID a daily reality and a new diagnosis due to the side effects of chemo, Gabby sunk into a deep depression once her treatments stopped. Her mom knew that it was critical for Gabby to be uplifted. So rather than wait an undetermined

amount of time for it to be safe to travel to Israel, Gabby’s mom recognized the one wish that has lived in her daughter’s heart since third grade – to have a husky puppy. When Gabby first met her new husky Skyla, she couldn’t stop smiling – “a real smile, not a fake smile,” shares her mom through tears. “I have my child back.” Skyla is Gabby’s best friend and her “baby” – the pup is smothered in happy hugs and kisses daily.

Gabby’s mom said, “this wish was a blessing. Everyone was so nice and generous – we were overwhelmed by the generosity.” Make-A-Wish is in the business of delivering hope, and hope has never been more important than now for our Wish kids. It can be difficult to continue to hope when we have had so many dreams deferred due to circumstances beyond our control, but the moment we have something to look forward to, everything begins to change. Hope is a superpower that kids living with critical illness, like Gabby, have been tapping into long before many of us heard the

About Make-a-Wish Connecticut

From A4

Make-A-Wish Connecticut creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. They seek to bring every eligible child’s wish to life because a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. Together, generous donors, supporters, staff and volunteers across the state currently grant nearly 250 wishes a year. Since 1986, Make-AWish Connecticut has granted more than 3,400 wishes to local children. For more information about Make-AWish Connecticut, visit ct.wish.org.

word, “lockdown.” Helping more kids find hope is something we all have the power to do, because for these children — as for all of us — the promise of a wish is so much more than a temporary escape. It’s a wellspring of strength to keep fighting for better days. Hope is essential for children living with critical illnesses and you can unlock its transformative power today. Don’t wait for hope; create it!

In Brief Blood drives

Queen Ann events

There are two ways COVID19 survivors can help – through a convalescent plasma donation or by simply giving whole blood. Plasma from whole blood donations that test positive for COVID19 antibodies may be used to help COVID-19 patients. Health emergencies don’t pause for holidays, game days or a pandemic – blood is needed every two seconds in the U.S. to help patients battling injury and illness. Blood donation safety precautions: To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, individuals who do not feel well or who believe they may be ill with COVID-19 should postpone their donation. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

won’t take long to make its way east. There are some RV parks near ski areas in Vermont, but most are closed in the winter. Snowmaking has saved the season so far for eastern resorts. The art and science of mixing air and water to create a sort of skiable surface on several acres of slope, while old, is still improving. Modern snowmaking systems no longer need rows of air compressors that once filled the parking lots.

The 2021 Executive Directors’ Forum will focus on creating a space where executive directors can learn, See CFGNB, A16

Modern fan-jet snow guns use water and electricity to quietly make more snow per hour than any of the old systems. It’s still magic and thanks to the night creatures who run the guns and move the snow piles around, there is skiing at sunrise at mountains near you. The next time you slide down a snow-covered trail when most of the world around you is gray and brown, say a quiet thank you to those who glide around the mountain on cold, dark nights getting it ready for you.

Obituaries SOUTHINGTONEllen Louise Gulick Schwarz, 88, of Plantsville, CT, passed away peacefully at home, after a 16 year struggle with dementia, on January 8, 2021. Ellen was born on September 10, 1932 in Orange, New Jersey, to the late Kenneth Farnum and Lena Louise Crane. She lived in Orange, New Jersey, for her childhood years, moving to Bridgewater, NJ, where she was a stay at home mom raising her three children. As an excellent baker, there was never a day without a dessert after school or dinner for her family. At age 50 she received her nursing license and worked as an LPN until her retirement, taking care of the elderly. She loved all people and was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. An open door policy was how she lived her life, all were welcome at any time. She was always there for everyone and was giving all the time. In 2005 she moved to Connecticut to be closer to family as she struggled with the dementia. She loved music and you could hear her singing her favorite songs daily, and making those around her laugh and smile right to the end. To Mulberry Gardens, Live Well Center caregivers and all the private care givers over the years, thank you for making Ellen’s life more enjoyable, comfortable, peaceful and memorable. We love you MOM, Grandma and greatgrandma. You will be in our hearts forever. Ellen is survived by three children: son, Glenn Gulick and wife Amy of Southbury and two daughters, Gail Perrella of Southington and Nancy Gulick of Bridgewater, NJ;

For now, winter sports in holding pattern The CIAC is currently planning on allowing teams to start winter practices on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The governing body had originally hoped to begin the season on Nov. 21, but after the state put a pause on organized youth and recreational sports until 2021 and many schools went to remote learning, the start date was pushed back.

“We are still planning on playing winter sports and state championships, but we want it to be in a safe environment,” CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said. Lungarini said that mitigating strategies that were approved were based largely on what was successful in the fall season, when the CIAC conducted a six-week season that did not include state tournaments. “DPH is recommending wearing masks indoors for

moderate-risk sports and some changes may have to be made to some sports to allow student-athletes to compete safely,” explained Lungarini. “We still need to hear back from DPH about changes we need to make.” In the winter, the CIAC sponsors basketball, gymnastics, boys’ ice hockey, indoor track and field, boys’ swim and dive, and wrestling. As an activity, competitive cheerleading squads also compete in a State Open. The DPH has deemed competitive cheerleading and wrestling as high-risk sports for the spread of COVID-19 and, at least for now, is recommending they not be staged. Indoor track, while considered a lesser risk, faces the challenge of facilities. Few schools have indoor tracks and most competitions are large, multi-school events held at places such as New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.

That information was sent to member schools, but the CIAC looked forward to getting more guidance from the Connecticut Department of

Public Health and the Governor’s Office in advance of its next meeting, which was scheduled for today, Jan. 14.

“There are still some concerns over our higher-risk sports and there are some questions about having venues for indoor track. Right now, it doesn’t look like college sites will be available,” Lungarini said. On Monday, Jan. 4 the CIAC met with DPH to talk about the state’s health situation. That conversation was also discussed at last Thursday’s meeting. “They spent a lot of time with us,” Lungarini said. “We gathered information and heard about their concerns for schools and the things around us.”

The CIAC anticipated an increase in coronavirus cases after people had come together for the holiday season. Lungarini added the organization’s sports medicine committee and DPH are concerned with the new strain of COVID-19 popping up in Connecticut. See CIAC, A16
