Maringola leans on her faith for a sense of meaning but, as COVID lingers, she can't join her church community. Instead she watches services online. Despite the barriers posed by the pandemic, she always has a community and her own family to fall back on in times of need and is seen by others as an inspiration. “Alecia has endured many trials, but her strong faith is what has helped her endure the fiery storms,” said Sandra

Alecia Maringola holds her favorite painting in her Plantsville home on Jan. 22.

Maringola fell in love with sketching at a young age but was prevented from doing so as she lost the ability to apply pressure with a pencil. Through her disease, a divorce and now a pandemic, Maringola found and developed her new love for painting. With its accessibility and ease, Maringola uses watercolor to create faith-based canvases along with colorful flowers, nature and more. One of her favorite works is a silhouette of a cross in a sunset accompanied by a Bible verse.

“I would notice I wasn't developing the way my friends might be developing, physically, and maturing,” Maringola said. “It was hard to accept that, I became very insecure.”

School board spending plan moves forward By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — Board of Education members voted for a spending plan for the upcoming school year Thursday, Jan. 27 and dis-

cussed a resolution asking state leaders to return control over health rules to local school boards. Opponents of mask and other pandemic mandates have spoken at board meetings

for months. Some board members have been sympathetic to those concerns and want state leaders to allow Southington officials to make decisions on health issues such as mask requirements and quarantining.

The board’s six Republicans voted in favor of putting the resolution issue on the Jan. 27 agenda. Three Democrats on the board voted against it. A committee of three board members was formed to draft an “apolitical letter” to state leaders. The letter will go before the board for a vote.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE AND DIET Everyone knows that chiropractors are great for helping with spinal realignment and relieving neck and back pain. But did you know you can also turn to your chiropractor for nutritional care and counseling? Chiropractors are well versed in how the digestive system works and are required to study nutrition as part of their chiropractic training. They know the importance of vitamin levels and how they should be in balance in the body. The digestive system is directly connected to the nervous system, which comprises the brain and spinal cord. Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, scoliosis, and hypothyroidism can benefit from dietary changes, promoting pain relief. Chiropractors can also help provide a foundation for future good nutritional habits. The Raya Clinic is an award-winning practice in the holistic health care field. It is a total health and wellness center with all holistic fields under one roof. It is truly a one stop shop! The town’s Planning and Zoning Commission took no action during its meeting Tuesday and will continue to consider the proposal that includes housing, a clubhouse and retail space. Anthony Properties is looking for town zoning changes to allow the $54 million project to proceed. The company wants to build on three properties totaling 41 acres owned by the Tolles family located at 1303, 1193 and 1177 West St.

Traffic proceeds at the intersection of West Street, left, and Curtiss St., right, near a property at 1177 West St., right, in Southington on Jan. 19. A Texas development company is looking to build a 264-unit apartment complex along with commercial spaces and amenities such as a clubhouse and park on the site that also includes adjacent properties at 1193 and 1303 West St. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

Developers are looking for a zone change that would allow greater density, building height and less commercial space in the mixed-use transition zone on West Street. The change would apply not only to the property in question but also another mixed-use zone further up West Street.

JUSTIN BLACK

AMAL BAHILI

There’s a Platt basketball player on the ballot for a third straight week for a reason. The Panthers closed last week riding a 7-game winning streak that sent them into Monday’s showdown with Bristol Central at 9-3. Justin Black has been a big part of it. The starting sophomore guard has averaged just under 10 points a game during the streak. He hit five 3-pointers en route to a season-high 17 Friday at Bristol Eastern.

Maloney girls basketball coach John Vieira is always talking up his senior captains. That’s because he’s got two good ones in Amal Bahili and Gracey Massicotte. Bahili, the point guard, got the Spartans rolling last Tuesday in their 50-24 rivalry win over Platt, finishing with 13 points. Then she scored 10 Thursday against Hartford Public. Bahili and the Spartans entered the week at 10-1 and No. 2 in Class L rankings.

BRENDEN HILINSKI

OLIVIA CASSESSE

The Sheehan hockey Titans turned the halfway pole of the regular season sitting atop the CIAC Division II playoff rankings at 10-1. A catalyst at both ends of the ice for the T-Men? Senior defenseman Brenden Hilinski. The captain is not merely one of Sheehan’s leading blue-liners, he’s one of its leading scorers. With a hat trick last Wednesday against Amity, Hilinski now has 12 goals and 13 assists on the season.

It’s been something of a roller coaster season so far for the Lady Titans, who entered the week at 9-5. One steady hand has been sophomore Olivia Cassesse. Picking up the reins as starting point guard from Caitlyn Velez, Cassesse is averaging 12.75 points a game in her first season. She had 18 points in last Tuesday’s win over East Haven and followed two nights later with a season-high 20 in a victory over Cheshire.

KENDRICK LAGAMAO

LEAH FARRELL

Lyman Hall’s Kendrick Lagamao made his debut in the Athlete of the Week spotlight two years ago as a freshman. He’s back in his junior year, which so far has seen eight individual wins and five relay victories in five meets. Lagamao’s versatility has been on full display. He’s captured races in the 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, including some against SCC Division I opponents.

We bid farewell to State Open track champ Ryan Farrell in the spring. Now we say hello to his kid sister. Leah Farrell made her first major splash on the varsity stage in last Thursday’s SCC East Sectional. With a personal-best time (so far) of 1:44.42, the Cheshire freshman won the 600 meters, the same indoor race her brother dominated. Leah also ran a leg on the first-place 4x800, which set a school mark at 10:42.

O’Connor said he wasn’t opposed to adding affordable housing to the plan although he wasn’t sure of the exact number of affordable units that would be acceptable to the development company.

Tabled again Shiu said he understood planners’ need to consider the matter carefully although he would have been happy with a decision Tuesday night.

“I’m a developer, I like things to go faster,” he said. Shiu and O’Connor spoke of the plan’s benefits to the town including increased tax revenue from apartments and stores. Bob Hammersley, planning commission chairman, reminded commission members that the tax implications of a project weren’t the commission’s purvue. “That’s not something that should weigh into our decision,” he said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ Business Owner / Service Provider? I want you to have to come here because you don't know what I have.”

Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

Bradley said they were keeping an eye out for an established location with good traffic when they saw that El Pulpo & Tapas Bar had closed at 1217 Queen St. They also looked at downtown Southington.

Both Bradley and Shelton will be coming into the restaurant business from other professions. Bradley is a clinical social worker in a hospice setting, while Shelton has been primarily working in roofing while doing some catering on the side and helping out family members who run restaurants in the Meriden area. Cooking has always been a passion for Shelton, who went to culinary school and worked at Max Amore Restaurant in Glastonbury after graduating. Prime Indulgence will be the fourth restaurant owned by members of his extended family. “For me honestly when I cook I love seeing people smile. That’s what I like seeing the best … that's what I love,” he said. dleithyessian@record -journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian
