Democratic calls for representation When the committee was formed, Democrat councilors wanted to have a member of their caucus on the committee along with Morelli. Jack Perry, a Democratic councilor, said he’d be willing to serve on the library building committee. He was on the library planning committee and has overseen building projects as part of his business. “I would love to be on that building committee,” Perry said. “I think of everybody on the council, between being on the planning committee and my background, this is my expertise.”

Spring clean-up at West Cemetery in Plainville will begin in March and continue through April. Christmas decorations around monuments and on flush markers will be removed. If you wish to retrieve items, do so by Tuesday, March 15.

In recognition of Black History Month, the Plainville Historical Society will present “Plainville is Our Town: African-Americans You Should Know” Saturday, Feb. 19, 2 p.m., at the Plainville Historic Center, 29 Pierce St. Presenter Gail Williams will highlight individuals who helped shape local history. The Main Street Community Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for the 2022-2023 academic year. A total of $275,000 in scholarships will be awarded. Perry said the project was too important to the community not to have all possible input. He said it was disheartening that Republicans had rejected calls to put a Democratic councilor in the group.
Triano said she didn’t want to return to the previous system for committees where they were filled with political appointees without relevant experience. “It’s not political and we want to keep it that way,” she said.
“This is a big purchase for our town,” Perry said. “I don’t think this is a committee where politics should be played.”

Val DePaolo, a Democratic council member, said she’s served on the library board and was part of the library advocacy group. Any of the three council Democrats would be happy to serve on the building committee but DePaolo said Republicans had little interest in involving Democrats.
