NEW HAVEN — Billy Carr trailed throughout his State Open wrestling final on Saturday night until a clutch takedown with seven seconds to go thrust the senior 182pounder to the title at Carr the Floyd Little Athletic Center. The two-time Class LL champion defeated Amity’s Simon Flaherty 4-3 to earn his first Open crown. Flaherty, who was unbeaten during in-state competition this season heading into the final, maneuvered a late first-period takedown for a 2-0 advantage. Carr immediSee Wrestling, A8

Frustration after latest strike By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
Here’s who spoke at the public hearing and what they had to say.
The owner of a building that’s been hit four times by vehicles said she is doubtful planned improvements to downtown Plantsville will prevent future crashes. Cheryl Moran’s building at 26 W. Main St. was hit again early Saturday morning. Police charged Kevin Mitchell, 25, of Cheshire, with drunk driving. Mitchell was driving on Main Street (Route 10) toward the downtown Plantsville intersection, when he hopped the curb, crashed through decorative planters and
General government and school district spending total $160.1 million, $7 million more than the current year. Following funding requests from Town Manager Mark Sciota and the Board of Education, the town’s Board of Finance will decide whether to change the spending plan.

DePaolo strongly supported Sciota’s request for two new police officers, saying they could help enforce traffic laws downtown. She’s long had issue with the parking See Budget, A2

Budget situation in the area surrounding her store. “The police department is grossly understaffed and has been for a number of years,” she told finance board members. “The dramatic increase in traffic, of residential homes, of commercial activity, has put a strain on our police services.”
She also supported road and infrastructure improvements in the proposed budget.
Dan Hart, SHS teacher and teachers union president Hart said qualified teachers were “the number one indicator of student success” and urged finance board members to support the requested school spending plan. The budget recommended by the Board of Education includes the hiring of more special education teachers, but Hart said that allowed students to be taught in the district at lower cost.

“Let’s bring the expertise in and save money in the process,” he said. Hart also wanted to see funding for other areas of education. “Don’t forget about supporting the materials our students need to learn. Don’t forget about the training our educators need,” he said.
Kristen Keska, Southington resident and parent, East Hampton teacher Keska said parents’ “wallets are feeling the pinch” from fundraisers and activity fees to support education.

“Public education is supposed to be a public effort,” she said. “Town parents have been paying their fair share for education in Southington.” Keska said she pays nearly $2,000 a month in childcare but would be willing to spend the additional $63 in property taxes the budget’s increase would require. Property tax rates would rise 1.5 percent under the spending plan. “I gladly accept that minimal increase to support town services,” she said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

Mitchell had a blood alcohol content of .14, according to police, nearly double the legal limit. Since 2017, vehicles have struck the building four times. Two resulted in drunk driving charges, including the one over the weekend, while a third involved a sleeping driver. Hop Haus bar is on the first floor of the building and Moran’s Soul Space yoga studio is on the second floor. The building’s east wall is a patchwork of repairs from the various accidents. In each collision, drivers have continued west on Main Street without turning, taking them through a vacant corner lot into Moran’s building. In addition to the cars that have hit the building, there also have been accidents with cars hitting poles and signs on the Main Street (Route 10) – West Main street corner closest to the Hop Haus building. “Just another example of that horrible intersection,” she said. Moran said she’s left with no choice but to put up concrete posts between the intersection and her building. “I see no other alternative at this point except to put up cement bollard posts to protect the building. Unlike a brick wall that gives upon impact, cement posts will not,” Moran said. “Which will probably and most tragically result in the next person going through that lot not surviving.” Moran said she’s been raising the issue for two years without satisfaction. “I guess we can only hope for the best and pray that no one gets killed because of the lack of concern,” she said. She’s asked the state Department of Transportation, which owns Route 10, to put up guardrails at the intersection.
“Clearly you’ve got a driver behavior problem,” Nursick said. “There’re only so many tools we have to try to reduce the harm potential of these people.” Only a concrete barrier would stop cars from hitting the building, according to Nursick, and such a wall would also pose a hazard to drivers. Tom Lombardi, Town Council vice chairman, said he’d be investigating what the town can do to stop such accidents such as posting more signs. The town has limited jurisdiction over the state road.

ately responded with an escape and Flaherty led 2-1 after one period.
Reed was dominant all weekend, capping a 5-0 performance with a pin in 3:45 of Montville’s Baylee Gagneir in the 160-pound final.
The Amity grappler went up 3-1 with a second-period escape. Carr cut the deficit to 3-2 with an escape in the opening seconds of the third. “I was just trying to scrap for every point I could,” Carr said. “That was one of the hardest matches all year. He was a great wrestler and maybe I will face him next week (at the New England Championships) and he will beat me. But in these type of matches, you have to scrap for every point.” Flaherty, still leading 3-2, had control for much of the stanza until Carr was able to get his takedown with seven seconds left. Flaherty threatened to score at the buzzer, but Carr held on for the crown. “It’s amazing,” Carr said. “I would say I would want to win it by a little more, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.” Carr said he went for a double-leg takedown two or three times toward the end of the match. Flaherty fended him off. “He’s probably one of the
Reed collected a takedown 44 seconds in and led 2-0 after the first period. She started out on top in the second and pushed her lead to 4-0 with two nearfall points at the 1:08 mark of the stanza before pinning with 15 seconds left. Southington’s Ashley Reed wrestles Berlin’s Natalia Chorzepa in the 160-pound semifinals during the inuagural CIAC Girls Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Saturday. strongest guys I’ve wrestled all year,” Carr said. “I kept going to shot and he was lifting me like I was a little kid. I’d never gotten that before.” With time ticking away, a change in strategy was in order. “Coach was telling me, ‘Get him under the leg and use two hands on one leg so he can’t stop you like that,’ and it worked, getting that single and getting him in the air, and that was two (points).” Southington coach Derek Dion said he wanted Carr to stay away from Flaherty’s strength.
“This is about as tough as a match as you will find,” Dion said. “Billy had to wrestle a perfect match, and he did. “It took a long time to get a good set-up on it,” Dion continued. “You need a perfect set-up to finish on that kid. His defense is really good. So when we were able to get in and get a lift on it, it was huge. He just wrestled a perfect match because he’s worked so hard.” In winning, Carr kept a family as well as a Southington tradition going. His older cousin, Zach Maxwell, was a two-time State Open cham-
pion as a Blue Knight. Carr, the No. 3 seed, made it to the finals with a 3-2 semifinal win over No. 15 John Summers of Fairfield-Warde. Carr earned a takedown with five seconds to go in the first period and padded his lead with an escape in the second to go up 3-0.
“It feels amazing; I worked hard all season and this is great,” Reed said. “I expected to get a pin, but I just went in and wrestled. I had beaten her before. Nerves got to me a little bit. I just had to wrestle my match.” Reed said she was proud to make school history as Southington’s first female wrestling state champ.
She wrestled in three varsity matches during the regular season and went 2-1. In the girls invitational, Reed gave Summers registered an esup just two points. She cape early in the third and opened with a 9-0 win over another single point with 50 Hayden Richardson of E.O. seconds to go. Southington’s Jacob Vecchio wrestles Avon’s Christopher Gens in the 220lbs semifinals during the 2020 CIAC State Open and Girls Invitational at Floyd Little Atheltic Center in New Haven on Saturday, Feb. 29. Jacob lost 4-1.

Cristian Calero (170) and James Rondini (132) lost their first initial consolation matches on Saturday and finished strong careers at Platt.
“She’s not a girl. She’s a wrestler.”
“They all did a great job,” Platt coach Bryan McCarty said. “It was more evident that (James) wasn’t as physically strong as the two weeks prior. Christian also out-performed his (No. 12) seed.”
Also performing well for Southington was senior Jacob Vecchio, who wrestled back to third place at 220 pounds just as he did last week in Class LL.
Rondini missed the final two weeks of the regular season with a dislocated elbow. He as cleared just before the Class M tournament and placed second.
Vecchio worked his way to the semifinals with a 3-0 day on Friday as the No. 12 seed. His reward was a meeting with top seed Chris Gens of Avon, who took the semifinal bout 4-1. Vecchio and Gens were scoreless after the first period. Gens was on top for the second stanza and worked Vecchio into a cradle for three back points. That turned out to be all he needed.

“I actually wrestled him in practice this week and he used me with the same move,” Vecchio said. “He put me in a cradle and pulled me back. He got the back points. He’s a great wrestler. Neutral it was an even match. He’s got those long

“Billy and I are partners all year round,” Vecchio said. “I forgot about it and I came off the mat and everyone was saying that was my 100th win. I said, ‘Oh, crap, I forgot.’ It was great.” Dion said Vecchio and Carr are two of the hardest workers on the team. “They are training so hard and going at each other with everything they have,” Dion said. “They are in a small lake of sweat after every day of practice. They are pushing each other and making each other better. They both have high GPAs and are both hard-working kids. Just awesome kids.” As for Platt, Class M heavyweight champ Luke Fuerstenberg defeated Branford’s Minsok Lee by a 3-1 decision in a consolation bout on Saturday afternoon before falling in the consolation final four.

Rondini finished his career with 144 victories, trailing only West Johnson (163) and Luis Murillo Jr. (153) on Platt’s all-time list. Also on Saturday, there was a moment of silence in honor of former Connecticut wrestling stalwart Ray Southland, the Washington Middle School principal who died last summer. Southland will be posthumously inducted into the New England Hall of Fame on Sunday. Carr and Vecchio now move on to New England Championships next week. Danbury won the State Open team title. Southington was seventh. Bristol Eastern’s Ella Nichols and Danbury’s Ryan Jack were voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestlers.

Renowned sculptor got start in DePaolo shop class By Terry Sutton
When Dale Zarrella was a child, he dreamed of playing major league baseball but his interests and skills would make him successful in another field. Zarrella would go on to become a reknowned artist specializing in sculptures. Zarrella graduated from Southington High School in 1980 and years later moved to Hawaii. Besides perfecting his craft, he is also a father and grandfather. He recently answered questions about his craft and his time in Southington. What prompted you to get into sculpting and art in general? I saw a set of carving tools in the drawer of my shop teacher Mr. Terry Morehouse at DePaolo junior high school and asked him if I could do a carving as my project.
wisdom I took to heart. He inspired my brother to become a great race car builder and in his own right, legendary pit crew member in NASCAR working for Dale Earnhardt Inc. as well as Stewart Haas racing. My brother retired a few years ago after his team won the Daytona 500 with Kurt Busch as his driver. Are all your wood sculptures created from wood found on Hawaii?
What early pieces did you make? I was 18 when I created a crucifix for St. Dominic‘s church (still on display there) and finished it when I was 19. My very first wood carving was at 12 years old and was a birthday present for the legendary race car driver Ed Flemke. He was a great mentor to my brother Jeff and I when we were very young. I remember him saying when I gave him the carving of his race car ‘stick with this kid it’s going to take you somewhere’. Great profound words of
All of my sculptures in wood are made from incredible indigenous and nonindigenous island fallen trees as well as driftwood that arrived on our shores from literally all over the world. About 10 years ago on a trip to Kalaupapa Molokai doing my studies for the father Damien sculptures, I found a piece of redwood driftwood that floated all the way here from the Pacific Northwest. High School Sports Roundup Girls basketball Livvy Pizzitola’s baseline jumper with 4.3 seconds to play lifted the Blue Knights to a 43-41 victory over Middletown in the first round of the CIAC Class LL playoffs on Monday night. The win ended Southington’s four-game losing streak and kept its season alive. Ninth-seeded Southington (16-6) was set to play Thursday night in the second round at No. 8 seed Glastonbury, which beat Mercy 57-44 in its first-round game. Prior to Monday night, the Blue Knights’ last win was its CCC regular-season victory over the Tomahawks 43-41 on Feb. 7. And it was Pizzitola who came up big in that win also. Her steal and layup lifted Southington to victory. The Blue Knights, however, lost at Glastonbury last week, 48-38, in the opening round of the CCC Tournament Against Middletown, Pizzitola’s 17 points led the way. And in a game that saw the Blue Knights commit 23 turnovers and struggle to score, she came up big down the stretch.

I also spent 15 years caring for turtles in ancient salt water fish ponds in a beautiful place called Kapono which unfortunately the whole area was run over by the lava flow a year and a half ago. It was one of the most beautiful places in the world that we lost in Hawaii to the lava. It was such a beautiful place I had the Cousteau Team come and film it as well as a National Geographic photographer Chris John’s who later became editor in chief of National Geographic. That’s what an incredible place it was to care for those turtles. The turtles have come back in such large numbers since protection they are now talking about taking them off the endangered species list here in Hawaii.

Southington off Mount Vernon Road by Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller back in the ‘50s. They even went into my family’s ice cream shop on West Street to have ice cream, Maple View Dairy. They unfortunately got a divorce and the home was never built and the head of art and culture in Hawaii had it built here on Maui as the clubhouse for the private golf club. Tell us more about your family roots in Southington. Both sides of my family had farms, farms in Southington as well as Sepko Farm on West Street in Southington. The West Street farm is the one that had the ice cream shop Maple View Dairy. Both farms were very active in the ‘50s and ‘60s as well as early ‘70s. I thoroughly enjoy visiting my hometown of Southington twice a year, I especially enjoy in the fall, the beautiful foliage, of course. What I miss most are my lifelong friends and family, after 35 years here on Maui. I enjoy doing presentations at the Southington Community Cultural Arts center in downtown as well as the schools in Southington in the hopes of inspiring some of those young artists to create far beyond their dreams. Just six months after opening a downtown shop, Southington Coffee House is working on a West Street express location in a Sunoco Gas Station.

“What can I say, Southington wants more,” Denis Guay said. “People have been asking us for a West Street location and a quicker experience.”

grab-and-go situation,” Denis Guay said.
Denis and Sandra Guay opened Southington Coffee House in the former Caffe Del Mondo storefront in August. The shop at 51 N. Main St. sells coffee, pastries, crepes and sandwiches.

A customer suggested the partnership with the West Street Sunoco in September. The Guays declined at first, but soon after decided it would be a good move. The customer, Prasad Maganti, owns the Sunoco and Mobil gas stations off the highway on West Street. Signs, counters, refrigerators and cases were already installed at the store on Wednesday. Harsh Sharna, manager of both gas stations, said the locations have become busier over the past year with the addition of restaurants, a hotel, medical offices and stores nearby. Since the station is right off the highway, he also sees a lot of truck drivers.
The Sunoco location will have most of the downtown menu, except for crepes and nitro brew. The portion of the gas station that will host the coffee house is under “They come in and get a cofconstruction. Denis Guay fee, a sandwich,” Sharna said it will look similar to the said. The station will stop selling “When you walk into there, Green Mountain Coffee and it looks just like our cafe,” he some prepackaged pastries said. “It’s like a replication of once Southington Coffee the coffee house.” House opens. Customers can already order online to have their order ready when they arrive. Denis Guay plans for people to be able to pull into designated parking spaces in the nearby Riccio Way lot and have their order run out to them. The North Main Street shop also has extra seating space in the storefront next door, a temporary measure that started around Christmas.
Store manager Lilly Fellows said they’ve expanded the menu to include more vegan and gluten-free options. “It gets busier and busier by the day,” she said. With so many businesses starting up on West Street, Fellows expected the Southington Coffee House Express to do well. “There’s a big demand for a gourmet product in that area,” she said.
The coffee house won’t be hiring any new employees for the West Street location. That will mean “substantially” more hours and promotions for employees, Denis Guay said. “The store’s excited, the employees are excited,” he said. “We have a lot of moms who work there. They’re now able to get 30 hours and make a Brianna Fitzpatrick, of Unionville, works on Feb. 26 on a decent take-home check.” jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ
