Club at Wallingford and The Farms Country Club have all been open since the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development gave golf facilities the green light to reopen last Wednesday so long as safety precautions were followed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The habits dying hardest, it seems, are those of the postgolf variety. This is a social sport, after all, no more so than after the 18th hole. Groups congregating in the parking lot were a major issue at Hunter. Other courses quickly strove to put a lid on that.

The new rules of the game weren’t always followed at Hunter, which is why the City of Meriden closed the municipal course on Monday. At the other area courses, golfers have been reportedly toeing the line. “My members are doing an outstanding job to adhering to all of the policies; I monitor them pretty close,” James Hanlon, club pro at The Farms, said Tuesday. “They know the deal; they don’t wish to be shut down. They are paying attention to what they need to do for us to keep the lights on.” The list, in bullet point, can be found on the web site of the Connecticut State Golf Association and the web site of just about any golf course. For starters:

“The first day it was a problem,” said Nick Paradis, the director at Hawk’s Landing. “When they are done golfing now, they disperse.” “It’s important people ad-

cart rule. Hawk’s Landing does make an exception. It allows two to a cart if the golfers are from the same household. Courses report cleaning the machines thoroughly. Hanlon says The Farms uses a steam cleaner on its carts. Tradition-Wallingford has eliminated them entirely for the time being.

Farms, have even taken out benches. Another major adjustment involves flagsticks. They stay in the holes. No pulling them out to putt. Cups have either been raised, placed upside down or outfitted with Styrofoam or PVC inserts so golfers don’t have to reach inside and retrieve the ball.

The flow of golfing has been steady, at least when the weather has been good. Hanlon reported 110 golfers daily at The Farms. “Very busy,” Hanlon said. “People are thrilled to be out and about. This has been the oasis.”

Readers’ Opinions More space needed Editor,

square feet and a budget of $16.9 million to the full Library Board.

I am writing in support of the plans for the Southington Public Library’s expansion. But not the recommendation made by the Library Board. I support the Library Planning Committee’s findings. They recommended the construction of a new library on the existing site, with a minimum of 31,200

Here are but a few reasons why this is the best alternative and worthy of community support:

This true story takes place in a small pharmacy in town. A man, visually disabled, orders two medicines and asks how much they’ll cost. When he hears the answer, his shoulders noticeably droop and he sighs. As he walks to the cashier and begins to get his purchases rung up, a woman comes out of nowhere and pushes in front of him. She hands the cashier a credit card and over his protests, she pays for his medicine.

no doubt, is some anxiety, anywhere from low-grade to full-blown. Will I stay healthy? How long will this last? What does this mean for my future plans – school, work, life goals? In the midst of this uncertainness, there’s been a bit of sunshine. The school car caravans are a great example. Thalberg, South End and Oshana schools recently organized car parades to boost student and family morale. Teachers drove to kids’ neighborhoods, to cheer them on as learning moved from the traditional classroom to alternate approaches. “You can do it” and “We’re in this together” read signs in the procession demonstrating once again that schools are about more than academics, they are a community.

The Town may forfeit $750,000 of the planned $1 million state grant based on the square feet included in the $13.9 million plan. The grant could be dropped to

$250,000. There would be less space for books, under the proposed plan. Space for the collection is a major reason for the expansion. Under the $16.9M plan there would be a 20 percent increase in space for books. Under the $13.9 plan the children’s activity area would shrink from 1,200 square feet to approx. 532

groomers and dog walkers, house cleaners and so on. Some restaurants and shops are in this category, too. While there are unemployment benefits and some other financial relief coming along, many of these folks don’t have a lot to fall back on in the interim. If you can, consider checking in on those service people you depend on and see how they are doing. Ask if future services can be purchased – perhaps gift certificates or retainers.

Lamont also announced that the state has placed an order for 100 ventilators with a Guilford manufacturing company, Bio-med Devices to be used in hospitals throughout Connecticut. Employees at the company have been working seven days a week to keep up with demand, he said. ton’s library. The state recommendation based on the town’s population is 44,000 square feet. The use of libraries has changed dramatically over the past 15 years. Libraries are multigenerational. The schools and PTA’s should be on high alert on this issue as should our downtown businesses. The Town Council See Letter, A16

Executive order opens fishing season 2½ weeks early Move to fight virus intended to eliminate large crowds on Opening Day, encourage solitary/family nature of fishing

And he brought along a couple of fishing rods, too.

Gov. Ned Lamont, Connecticut’s 2020 fishing season officially opened 2½ weeks ahead of schedule. Starting March 25, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams could be fished statewide.

Thanks to an executive order Lamont’s decree was signed the previous day by prompted by the ongoing fight against the coronavirus. It’s a two-pronged strategy: n Eliminate

the large crowds that typically turn out on the traditional Opening Day on the second Saturday in April; Encourage the more inherent solitary/family nature of fishing at a time of state-mandated social distancing.

“Anglers should maintain a distance of at least six feet from others, practice good personal hygiene, stay home and away from others if they feel sick, and avoid areas where anglers or others congregate,” Mike Beauchene, Supervising Fisheries Biologist with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, remarked in an emailed statement.

Thomas Leffingwell, of Wallingford, fishes from his kayak on Black Pond in Meriden on Wednesday, March 25, which became the opening day of Connecticut’s 2020 fishing season when Gov. Ned Lamont issued an executive order the previous day that opened lakes, ponds, rivers and streams to fishing statewide. Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal

With the waters of Connecticut thus thrown open, Black Pond was buzzing with activity last week and so was Fishin Factory on MeridenWaterbury Turnpike in Southington, where a steady flow of fishermen were coming in to pick up their 2020 license. Vennie Mangiaracina, who has owned Fishin Factory for about 35 years, said people want some normalcy amid the upheaval of COVID-19.

“Absolutely. Nobody likes what is going on with the doom and gloom; they want to get out and fish,” Mangiaracina said. “We are busy. We are always busy and that’s a good thing.” Morgan Morenz of Meriden was in the shop to pick up his license and then planning to make a prompt beeline to Red Bridge to fish the Quinnipiac River in Meriden. “It’s going to be good to be outside,” Morenz said. “I’m going to go as soon as I get my license. I’m going to get my pole and I will be going as soon as I can.” On the east side of Meriden, Ed Girling was happily (and patiently) casting using worms and marshmallows for bait. “I’ve been fishing here 30something years,” the 72See Fishing, A17

MERIDEN — Thomas Leffingwell got a chance to give his brand new kayak a test run Wednesday morning, March 25.

Black Pond is close to Girling’s home. After a couple of hours pondside he had yet to catch anything. He did have a 19-inch catch last year and, in his most successful single-session haul, reeled in eight.
