KENNEDY MIDDLE SCHOOL

Display pays tribute to eighth-graders The photos and names of more than 250 Kennedy Middle School eighthgraders, who are moving onto high school, now adorn the school’s street-facing windows. They are accompanied by hearts, stars and a simple message, all in the school’s colors — green and white. It reads: “Good luck eighth graders. We miss you.”

“The entire front face of the building is a tribute to our eighth-graders,” said Kennedy Assistant Principal Susanne Vitcavage, who explained that she had hatched the idea in April. It became a reality last week. “I can’t take credit for the decorating,” Vitcavage said. The green and white lettering, stars and hearts now on display were all the handiwork of Michael Serafino, a See Kennedy, A2

Vitcavage contacted the Rich family seeking a copyright waiver to use the photos. Jason Rich happily granted that waiver earlier this week. “We’re just trying to help the public,” Rich said.

Passersby driving along Route 10 can see the display. Vitcavage admitted she cried a few tears after seeing the finished display. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said. “It’s even better than I thought.” Families had already started to drive by the school last Thursday to see the surprise, which Vitcavage had previously hinted at via social media. Serafino completed the project on his own time, between virtual meetings with students and staff and other school activities.

“There’s a lot of awesome kids who I really enjoyed seeing every day,” Serafino said. He said creating a mural was the least that he could do for them.

For Serafino, the project was worth the endeavor. He and other school staff hadn’t seen the students in person since mid-March, when Kennedy and all other schools across the state had to close. The social aspect of school was suddenly disrupted. “Seeing your friends, and getting excited for summer ... all of that was taken away from our eighth-graders,” Serafino said.

The photos are copies of those in the school’s yearbook. They were taken by Art Rich Photography. Art Rich died in April at 73 after being infected with COVID19.

Vitcavage was then able to order five-by-seven-inch copies of the photos, which were printed earlier in the week.

from being presented to voters. During a recent meeting of the Elementary School Facilities Committee, an ad hoc committee of the Board of Education, School Superintendent Tim Connellan floated the possibility that a proposal would not likely be presented to voters until November 2022. The committee is tasked with making a recommendation to the Board of Education on the future of the town's eight elementary school buildings. Last week, the group listened to a pitch from a potential project manager but no votes were taken. As the committee moves forward, Connellan made clear his objective. “I'm trying to do the right thing by the community, to set this community up for the next 50 years or so,” he said. “That's the bottom line.” Representatives from Colliers Project Leaders, a firm with a Connecticut office in Madison, discussed what an owner's project manager

POINTS OF REFERENCE It is well known that 80 percent of adults experience back pain at some point in their lives. 20 percent of these adults develop low back pain that becomes chronic (lasting longer than 12 weeks). To help prevent and reduce cases of chronic back pain, guidelines from the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society recommend the following treatments for acute (shorter-term) low back pain; offering information and reassurance; recommending over-the-counter medication; and providing manipulation of the affected part of the back, which can be done by chiropractors or physical therapists. The medical and chiropractic communities often work hand in hand, making referrals to one another on the basis of what treatments best suit there patients. Auction

June auction

There’s remediation work to be done around utility corridors, Schlesinger said, but that work didn’t make sense until it’s determined where buildings will be placed. There is still some state remediation money available that will transfer to the new owner.

HilCo Real Estate is overseeing the auction. Bids are due June 18 and on-site inspections will start later this month.

that the carry on this has been significant.” The company got the property to the point where a new owner could start development on the 245 residential units and 22,000 square feet of commercial space allowed by the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission. “If there’s somebody out there that can take it from here, there’s a lot in play. A lot’s been done,” Schlesinger said.

Schlesinger said Meridian has had many buyers interested in the property and nearly sold it in 2016.

The property is also in a tax increment financing district, which provides a loan that’s paid back by future taxes.

An auction is more likely to result in a completed sale. “We’ve had so many people at the table,” Schlesinger said.

Strong rental market

Despite the pandemic, he’s hopeful that the economy is rebounding and that buyers are interested in land in a growing town.

The town’s economic development coordinator Lou Perillo said the project rests on the strength of the rental

units. Other housing developments in town have shown there’s strong demand, he said.

Camp Sloper will operate their on site programs this summer, though with strict guidelines in order to keep their staff and campers healthy and safe.

By Jessica Simms Special to the Record-Journal

The magic of summer camp can still be a part of children’s lives this year as many day camps will open, though with strict guidelines for staff and campers. “Summer camp is summer camp. It may look different but the fun that we’re going to have,” said Carolyn Daniels, camp director of Mountain Mist Day Camp, which is run by the MeridenNew Britain-Berlin YMCA. “The laughter that we’re going to have. At Camp Sloper and Mountain Mist Day Camp, campers do not have to wear face masks, but the counselors are required to wear them while working. “I joked with my camp staff

to say that you’re going to have a mask tan today,” said John Benigni, the CEO of the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA. “It won’t be just sunglasses, you’ll have a tan with a face of a mask.” At both day camps at the Boys & Girls Club of Meriden, kids are recommended, but not required to wear masks, according to Executive Director Larue Graham. Staff, however, are required to wear a mask. The camps will also not allow these smaller groups of

At the Boys & Girls Club, art supplies will be provided to each individual camper. “As far as art supplies, things like pencils, crayons, magic markers, things like that that the kids use on a daily basis, we’re actually going to buy each individual kid their own set that they’ll keep in a larger bookcase,” Graham said. “That way, they’re the only ones that are physically touching it and then we will disinfect the case to ensure that no germs are being transferred.” Daily temperature checks will also take place at these camps to ensure any potential COVID-19 symptoms are caught early on. Both Mountain Mist and the two camps at the Boys & Girls Club will have a designated spot for campers with COVID-like symptoms.

Federal aid on its way to local schools By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff

Perry to challenge Sampson in 16th By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — Republican state Sen. Rob Sampson

has been at the forefront of opposition to the governor’s shutdown orders. His challenger this November,

Perry said Sampson has taken ideological stands while in the General Assembly, but has done little else. Sampson said Perry has mostly dodged questions on his own platform.

SUDOKU

Sampson and Perry are both running for the 16th Senate district seat. The district includes portions of Cheshire, Southington, Prospect, Wolcott and Waterbury.

Connecticut’s #1 Real Estate Team

Sampson, 50, won election two years ago, replacing former state senator and Republican Joe Markley, who ran for lieutenant governor. Sampson at the time was representing the 80th House district.

Southington Superintendent of Schools Tim Connellan is planning to propose using the funds to buy more devices for distance learning.
