Jo Wagner, 19, and Emelia Pettit, 18, said they were proud to see their hometown support them and others like them in a way that had never been done before.
Local developer Mark Lovley is looking to add a half-dozen homes to Welch Road while he waits for market changes that will allow construction to begin on the North Ridge golf course.
“It’s so cool. It’s so awesome,” said Pettit. “You don’t see this in other towns, you mostly see it in cities. It’s the first sign I’ve ever seen that there might be change.” Southington hosted its first Youth/ Family PRIDE Festival at YMCA Camp Sloper on Saturday, part of a See Pride, A2

six similar houses on Welch Road adjacent to the subdivision to the west of North Ridge Court. The proposal was on the Planning and Zoning Commission docket for June 1.
View of undeveloped land at the entrance to North Ridge Estates off Welch Road in Southington on May 28. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal
Lovley said he’s planning for the homes to have driveways on Welch Road rather than attaching them to the existing North Ridge Estates. They’ll be similar to the houses he’s already built and total around 2,500 square feet.
With limited houses for sale nationwide, Lovley said he expects them to sell quickly if approved by the town. “I have a waiting list of more people than I do the lots,” Lovley said. “There’s no inventory out there, that’s the problem. They’ll sell.” He’s anticipating a price between $550,000 and $600,000. Lovley said the rise in materials is pushing prices higher. The lumber for these homes is nearly $60,000 higher than in October.

Lou Perillo, the town’s economic development coordinator, said sports facilities can be tricky to finance. He’s been working for years to help move along a sports complex on West Queen Street. “The debt service levels, the banks don’t want a property in the event that something goes awry,” Perillo said. However, the town’s golf courses and ranges seem to be doing very well and have benefited from a renewed interest in golf during the pandemic, he said.

School budget to use federal money to add therapists By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
School officials will use a mix of savings and federal funds to pay for a host of projects, equipment and additional therapists in the upcoming year. The Board of Education met May 27 and voted on a budget reallocation plan. Since the district was receiving more than $4 million in federal pandemic funds, the Town Council included a small increase to the education budget for the upcoming year.
of that federal money for the 2021/22 school year to fund new positions as well as pay the salaries of existing teachers. In a party-line vote, council Republicans voted for a $100.6 million education budget, an increase of less than .3 percent.

During her report to the board Thursday, she said $662,000 in federal funds should also be used to pay for a dozen existing teaching positions. DiNello warned of a problem when the federal grant money was exhausted, however. The district could hit a funding cliff when it doesn’t have money in its operating budget to fund the teaching positions paid through federal dollars. DiNello said that would result in either cuts to the school district or would require a major budget hike by the town.
On Thursday the board also approved a list of equipment and projects that will be bought with money from the current budget or with savings from the previous year. Since the pandemic shut down activities and sports, the district was left with nearly $2 million in unspent funds from the previous school year. The list includes all types of materials and equipment such as new marching band uniforms, office furniture, fitness machines, baseball field improvements, cafeteria tables and window treatments. Board members said some of those items were in need of replacement, such as the See Budget, A10

While the district funded everything it had originally requested, board chairwoman Terri Carmody said there wouldn’t be money left for extra instruction. The disruption over the past year put some students behind, she said, and the district had wanted to use the federal funds to help them catch up.

Thank you to our loyal customers and families for voting for us for Best Daycare. This award means the world to us. Matthew and I, Jaclyn, decided to follow our dreams of owning a daycare and started the business in September of 2019. We worked hard to grow and establish our business. We were just getting to full capacity when the pandemic started. Knowing how important it was for our families as well as our staff to keep the business open we were able to stay open through the whole pandemic and are so blessed for the support from our rascal families for sticking it out with us. What a tough time to start a business but with the amazing team we have at our center, they fought with us to reassure our families their children were safe coming to daycare. We are so grateful that we have been able to continue growing and are pleased to announce we are full at the moment but will have openings in the fall in our baby room. We are looking to expand so we are excited to announce that we will have a brand new center soon. Please be on the lookout for us and come visit to see us once we are established. We ask that you follow our facebook page @mylittlerascalsfamily to see what our kids are learning about and how we are supporting our families and community. We will be posting updates about the new center and ask for any and all feedback and suggestions with this new exciting process. We want you all to be a part of the design and process. We appreciate everyone and thank you for the referrals to our center. 445 N Main St. Southington • 860.276.0123 • mylittlerascals1@outlook.com Facebook: @mylittlerascalsfamily • Instagram: @my_little_rascals_

Southington police, assisted by Connecticut State Police, as well as Meriden and Middletown police, followed Gollnick to Route 66 in Middletown. Egan said Middletown police used Stop Sticks to deflate the Silverado’s tires, puncturing at least two of them, however he continued driving. Gollnick lost control while on the Arrigoni Bridge in Middletown, striking the bridge’s retaining wall before colliding with a Southington police cruiser, damaging both vehicles.Another cruiser was damaged when its tires were deflated by the deployed Stop Sticks.

Workshop sessions The Capacity Building Initiative of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain was started in 2018 to provide local nonprofit organizations with resources aimed at strengthening organizational functioning. In 2021, the CFGNB will host an all-new series of workshops for nonprofits to continue the work of the initiative and aid organizations in current fundraising techniques.
Since the initiative began, local nonprofit organizations have benefited from multiple trainings, workshops and webinars designed to help them address the increasingly difficult challenge of sustaining programs and services during lean fiscal times. The Initiative also provides organizations with access to an on-site library and resource center with free access to printed and online resources focused on securing and writing grants, governance, and a variety of professional areas. During the pandemic, some of these resources are available online. Visit cfgnb.org/capacity-building-fornonprofits for more information.
