9-run third carries Southington to national-record 20th state title By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff

The Plainville High School Class of 2022 celebrates under a stunning sky during commencement exercises Friday, June 10 at Tinty Stadium. Princeton-bound valedictorian Daniel Sozanski told the 157-member class: “We are no longer the young and inexperienced freshmen we were when we first stepped into this school. The lessons we’ve learned from all our mentors and peers will guide us for years to come as we take the next step in our journey.” More photos and the list of graduates inside.

LaPorte named state American Legion officer of the year By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — Officer Chris LaPorte received the local and state Officer of the Year award from the American Legion.

“We’re just like you,” LaPorte said of working with the community. “Anyone in community policing, which is a role more important now than ever, we want you to talk to us. I’m there for you, I’m a person just like you.”

LaPorte, who has been with the Southington Police Department for 25 years, called the recognition “an honor.”

Police Chief Jack Daly said LaPorte does a “phenomenal job” and is “ingrained in the community,” having grown up in town.

He currently serves as community/crime prevention officer.

“You’ve heard the same word out of my mouth all season: discipline,” Hernandez said. “I told the girls you can not understimate that team. They are phenomenal team. We’ve only had good games against them because we’ve had good discipline. We started the game with not-so-great discipline and you will hear that word out of my mouth a million times a game.”

Courtesy runner Madelyn Napierski capped the rally by scoring on an error as Southington finished the inning with a 9-1 lead. In all, Southington sent 13 runners to the plate in the inning. This was the third time Southington defeated Bristol Central (22-5) this season. The Blue Knights won a May 18 regular season meeting 80, then ousted Central by mercy rule, 13-1, in the CCC Tournament semifinals a week later. Southington is now 20-5 in

The local post nominated LaPorte for the state award.

From A1

Police officers can see a lot of bad things during their career, but they also see good things, LaPorte said, adding there is no better feeling than helping someone in need.

“It’s nice to see him recognized, he’s a very modest guy,” Daly said.

Steve Pintarich, adjutant for the Southington American Legion post, said the local American Legion Officer of the Year award is given to someone who shows the “complete package” of a police officer, including being involved in the community outside of police work.

Rogers Orchards opens ice cream window By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — Rogers Orchards has a new walk-up ice cream window at its Long Bottom Road location. Ice cream will be sold Wednesday through Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m., said Keith Soyka, assistant manager of the 336 Long Bottom Road location. The window will be open later than the store hours to offer the new service. There are 10 flavor options of Gifford’s ice cream along with toppings and sundae options, Soyka said. “We’ve always seen people coming to the orchard as an experience,” Soyka said. “It’s all about community. We want it to be a really relaxed and chill way to end your night.” The service will only be at the Home Farm location for now, but if it does well the orchard will look into expanding it to the Sunnymount location at See Window, A11

DelSanto said his family goes to the orchard and looks forward to apple and pie season. Soyka said the Home Farm location is close to many recreational activities, such as hiking at Crescent Lake and biking. This will offer residents another option to unwind at the end of their day, Soyka said. The store offers cups and cones and sundaes right now, he said.

SOUTHINGTON — The Life of Charlie Lembo was celebrated Sunday night at his “favorite place.” Southington High School’s Fontana Field. “This was his favorite place, but (he) would not be happy about the chairs on the infield,” joked Lembo’s wife Deb. “I’m just throwing that out there. He would have said, ‘What are you doing?!’ “We’d drive out for dinner on a Friday night and we’d head (by Fontana Field), I’d be like, ‘Where are we going?’ And he’d say, ‘Oh, I need to check on the field.’” Fontana Field was Lembo’s pride and joy. He spent

hours meticulously grooming the field and helping make the SHS baseball program what it is today. And whether he would have approved of the rows of chairs on the infield or not, Fontana Field was the perfect spot for over 500 of the late coach’s friends, former players, colleagues and family to gather and honor the longtime SHS baseball coach. Lembo, who coached Southington from 2011-2021, passed away on May 28 after a year-long battle with colon cancer. He was 61. Under cloudy skies but perfect baseball weather, Lembo’s family, members of the current SHS baseball coaching staff, and some of Lembo’s former Blue Knights each recalled Lembo’s life on and off the field. There were plenty of laughs and a few tears, but the outpouring See Lembo, A16

of those in attendance was testament to Lembo’s life that touched a community he made better. Through stories told by his son Chris, daughter Meghan, and younger sister Cathy as well as by those who coached with Lembo and played for him, a clear picture emerged of a coach who truly cared about more than what happened between the white lines.

FEDERAL AMERICAN RESCUE ACT

Officials review requests for funds

By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — The city has so far received more than $36.58 million in requests to fund projects with COVID-19 relief funds made available through the American Rescue Plan Act. That total already surpasses the close to $36.36 million in funding the city is scheduled to receive through the federal program. The more than three dozen funding applications that have been submitted to date include several requests from city departments for infrastructure repair and upgrades.

Deb said this year’s team “would have made Charlie proud.” And though he passed prior to Southington’s postseason run to the 251853

“Always touch home plate,” joked Sal Romano, a senior on that SHS team who went on to pitch in the major leagues. “Regardless of how that year ended, I remember Coach pulling me aside after that state championship game and telling me how proud he was of me. And he knew I had bigger things ahead of me in this game.

On hand were the next wave of those boys who’ll soon be young men. Members of this year’s SHS baseball team, which 24 hours earlier had lost to Fairfield Warde 7-5 in the CIAC Class LL state championship, listened to those who’d been touched by Lembo.

Hurry, Offer Ends Soon! HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / CLASS

Now infamous, the Blue Knights lost that title game after umpires ruled a Southington runner had missed home plate scoring what would have been the winning run.

“Coach Lembo cared so much so much for his family, community and players,” continued Romano. “Coach was a human being with a big heart, not just a baseball coach. He molded boys into young men. I know he did that for me.”

TOWN’S LESIGLATIVE PRIORITIES

Lembo won 178 games at SHS and took the Blue Knights to four state-title games. He never won a championship, although his 2011 team did lose a controversial state final in 10 innings to Newington.

“Me and Coach related so much when it came baseball,” added Romano. “The love, passion and dedication for this game is something we shared. Me and coach shared that bond of baseball.

title game, he was with the team “in spirit” and talked to coaches daily for updates on the Blue Knights. In the crowd to honor Lembo was former SHS baseball coach Steve Matyczyk, who Lembo replaced prior to the 2011 season. Matyczyk is a Southington alum, who after playing baseball for John Fontana at SHS (1989-91) went on to play at UNC-Greensboro, then returned to coach with Fontana before taking over the Blue Knights from 20012010. “I knew Charlie well. It’s funny, everything they said, I lived,” said Matyczyk. “The time he spent on the field. The late-night phone calls. The sarcasm. It was just spot on.” “Even when he wasn’t the head coach, he was pushing for everything they have here now,” continued Matyczyk, who left SHS to teach and be an assistant baseball coach at Simsbury High School. “Charlie did much for this program. He really raised the bar. “ From rebuilding the SHS home dugout to the school’s indoor batting cages the current Blue Knights enjoy, Lembo pushed for every detail that makes Southington baseball one of the premier programs in the state. Lembo picked up where Matyczyk and Fontana left off. The daughter of the late John Fontana was also on hand. Fontana, a coaching legend with 669 career wins and two state titles, died in 2019. Chrissy Fontana-Hurd said seeing the community come together like it did Sunday night in support of Lembo is just another example what her father started over 40 years ago. “It’s phenomenal. People just know Southington baseball, whether it was my father or Coach Lembo,”

spearheaded the team honoring her father in 2021 by wearing hats with “JFF” on the back of them.

“When you played for coaches like Lembo or my father, you remember the lessons they teach you, you take on for years and years. After my father passed, the number one thing I heard from people was that my father taught them lessons they remembered for the rest of their life.

Fontana-Hurd noted that her grandfather and Lembo’s father were good friends. And when Lembo was up for the SHS job, it was John Fontana who called and asked an important question.

“You heard Sal up there today. He’ll never forget his coach. It’s just beautiful.” Fontana-Hurd also spoke about how, despite his own battle with cancer, Lembo

served hot dogs. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream was also served as his favorite musical artist, Bruce Springsteen, blared over the speakers.

A17

Lembo’s love of music, as well as his cooking and favorite McDonald’s ice tea, were also a common theme among Sunday’s speakers.
