Water rate hike starts in August

THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE

Berkmoes said. “It’s everything. Our chemicals have gone up, our piping has gone up, obviously our labor has gone up.

SOUTHINGTON — Water rates will rise beginning next month following a vote by the Board of Water Commissioners.

“We don’t want to come up short,” he added.

The rate per 100 cubic feet of water will rise by 10 percent to $3.87. A quarterly base charge will increase from $25.96 to $28.56. Residents are billed quarterly.

Italian flags removed per new ordinance By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Bob Berkmoes, water board president, said the increase is greater than the usual annual rate hike. Previous increases have been between 3 and 5 percent, according to water department officials.

Douglas Arndt, water department superintendent, said cost increases have outpaced the typical annual rate hikes. “Our costs have been going up four, eight, nine percent,” he said. “The costs have been outweighing (increases).” The department needs to maintain its savings for major projects, including infrastructure.

“We have a good number of “We usually try to keep it as low water mains that are over 100 as we possibly can. But with the years old,” Arndt said. “The increase in supplies in districonsequences if we don’t have bution, we had to raise it a little bit more than we usually do,”

torney Alex Ricciardone who said they did fall under the ordinance that was passed in April. They were taken down last week, according to David Zoni, Unico’s representative on the festival committee. “It’s been a tradition that we put up those flags. Unfortunately this year we ran into the ordinance issue,” Zoni said. “A few of the business owners have been asked if we can put the flags on their buildings. They’re cooperating, we just haven’t done it yet.” In previous years, American and Italian flags have been flown from alternating lampposts and poles along Center Street. The festival is funded by Unico, Sons of Italy and Sorelle d’Italia, three local Italian-American organizations. It is scheduled for July 29 to July 31.

Party-line vote Republicans and Democrats have clashed about the ordinance. Republicans, who proposed the ordinance, said it was needed to avoid lengthy and distracting debates over the suitability of flags. Republicans also cited

“When it becomes governmental speech, we have to be very careful,” she said of public flags.

The ordinance passed the council with six Republican votes in favor and three Democratic votes in opposition.

Zoni said he would have liked to see an exception for national flags given the number of ethnicities represented in Southington.

Democrats said they wanted a process for selecting which flags are appropriate to fly on town property.

“If they thought about it a little more, they might have been able to figure a solution concerning national flags,” he said. “We have ethVictoria Triano, Town Coun- nic groups in this town that cil chairwoman and a Rehave national origins. Even with the increases, Arndt said Southington water is cheaper than many surrounding communities. “We were always in the lowest thirty percent if not twenty percent of the rates,” he said. “A lot of water departments, as capital projects increase, their rates also increased.” Wallingford’s Water Department charges $4.09 for 100 cubic feet of water although the basic service fee is between $15.11 and $17.20 for most houses — lower than Southington’s fee. Walingford also bills quarterly.

Spinal stenosis is a painful and debilitating condition caused by the narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of the spinal cord. Symptoms of spinal stenosis include numbness or tingling in the extremities and buttocks, lower back pain while standing or walking, leg or arm weakness, and difficulty balancing. Chiropractors are skilled at treating patients with spinal stenosis. They can conduct diagnostic imaging to determine the level of spinal compression. SpineMed spinal decompression, manual spinal adjustments, stretching, and exercises are common treatments that reduce muscle tension, relieve inflammation, and make more space available for spinal nerves.

The Wayton attracted a record 290 entries this year with players from all over the state culminating in Championship Sunday. The tournament has turned to benefiting dogs in need since 2017. The Wayton has given more than $20,000 to dog charities, including cutting a check for $6,000 to One More Dog Rescue on Sunday.

“A lot of people were saying the level had really risen this year specifically,” Wayton said. “We had a high level of tennis across all of the divisions. We just had great players from all over the state.”

Wayton added that for the 15th year he made it a goal to bring back former players, including inaugural champion John Waters’ return to the tournament. “We had players who hadn’t played here in five or even 10 years and those players were stunned how big the tournament had gotten since they last played,” Wayton said. lence victim, along with their age and date of death. The shirts represent “the space” the people who died would have occupied, said Camp Washington director Cameron Taylor. Creating the shirts, with information from gunmemorial.org, had a big impact on the youth involved. “Some of (the victims) are their age,” Taylor said. “Some of them remember what they were doing that day that someone else lost their life.” Martin said a St. Paul’s parishioner, who is on the Camp Washington board, suggested the church host the memorial because it fits with St. Paul’s mission to

bring awareness to gun violence. “One of the things we do together is pray so that we can go out and be who God wants us to be,” Martin said. “Gun violence is a public health crisis right now and we need to treat it that way. It’s a problem that matters to the church and matters to God.” As she looked at photos of the victims on gunmemorial.org, Martin thought about the fact they left behind parents, siblings, chil-

dren and friends and were “absolutely loved by God.” Martin also noticed many were men of color. Martin feels that these kinds of displays are important because residents of Southington, which is predominantly white, can feel removed from the tragedies that led to the deaths. “It’s all the more reason to display (the memorial) in Southington,” Martin said. lsellew@record-journal.com 203-317-2225

“It felt like a reunion of sorts,” said Wayton, adding that the tournament was an all around success. “We were fortunate to donate $6,000 again,” Wayton said. “It felt like a real community event with a lot of spectators. Even players who lost in their first match came back to watch. It was a lot of fun. Other players who didn’t play but were just watching told me they wanted to get back into the sport. Hopefully, more will come out next year and play for a good cause.” The complete list of champions Davis in the Men’s A Singles; Wayton in the Men’s B Singles; Ben Doolittle in the Men’s 45+ Singles; Liese Sippel in the Women’s Sin-

Help Provide Summer Lunches for Kids Through Bread For Life

The Southington Chamber of Commerce’s Community Care Initiative is asking for support for Bread for Life’s Southington Children’s Lunch Program for much needed lunches during summer vacation. Last year Bread for Life served more than 3,000 summer lunches to children in need. “No school” shouldn’t mean “no lunch” for kids in town. The need has never been greater, and Bread for Life is

serving lunch to 675 children a week. We are asking the business community to assist Bread for Life in providing kids with healthy lunches. Items may be dropped off at Bread for Life, 31 Vermont Avenue, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call the BFL office at 860.276.8389 with any questions or to arrange a drop off time after hours if needed. Items in great need include: • monetary donations to purchase perishable items (deli meat, bread, yogurt, cheese, milk, ice cream treats); • grocery gift certificates to purchase perishable items; • individually packaged snacks (chips, pretzels, goldfish, etc.); • individually packaged desserts (cookies, mini muffins, etc.); • individual servings of cold cereal; • individually packaged Jell-o and pudding containers;

• individual cups of instant macaroni and cheese; • peanut butter or cheese and cracker packets; • granola bars; • Individual juice boxes/juice pouches; • shelf stable milk; and • mini-water bottles. Please bring all items directly to Bread for Life.

Non-perishable items may be left with the Chamber if needed and we will make sure they are delivered to BFL. For more information on the Southington Chamber of Commerce, its Community Care Initiatives, or to become a member, visit southingtonchamber.com or call the office at 860.628.8036.

cut, the 10-year-old nonprofit veterans service organization which provides one-day, no-cost home repairs focusing on safety and accessibility to military and public safety veterans in need. House of Heroes was also in Berlin Saturday, assisting a 93-year-old World War II veteran. The two pro-

jects were the organization’s eighth in Plainville, seventh in Berlin and 174th and 175th overall since its 2012 founding. “The kids were all eager to sign up for this,” said Coach Shea. “Projects like this are a big part of what Blue Devil Football is all about. It’s humbling. It teaches them the importance of giving back and what community spirit is all about.”

Saturday’s Plainville project was made possible by Project Partner Tops Marketplace of Plantsville, while the Berlin project at the home of Army veteran Richard Glidden was supported by Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company, along with volunteers from the Berlin Lions Club and Rotary Club of KensingtonBerlin. At the Johnson home in Plainville, Blue Devil football players worked side-by-side with Tops Marketplace and House of Heroes personnel, repairing and staining Johnson’s weathered deck, and clearing and beautifying the entire property. “It is so essential to give back to the community and to support our veterans,” said Hillary Holiday, a member of the Salerno family that has owned and operated Tops Marketplace for 40

years. “When you can give, you should, and at Tops Market we do it with a happy heart.”

people you will ever meet,” said Jamrog. “They never ask for anything and they needed some help.

“I feel so honored, especially with the kids being here today helping like this,” said Johnson, who shares his home with his wife of 49 years, Vera. Making the day extra special for the Johnsons was the fact that one of the Blue Devils helping out, junior Marcus Kiley, used to live next door. When Kiley was in elementary school, he once asked Johnson to visit his school for a Veterans Day ceremony because, says Vera, “Peter was the only veteran he knew.”

“Peter said to me, ‘I don’t deserve this’ and I said ‘you most certainly do,’” continued Jamrog. “It is moving and humbling to see this happening. It’s truly like a dream come true. We need more of this in today’s world.”

The day was highlighted by a ceremony in Johnson’s front yard, during which the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, the National Anthem was played by Thigpen on his trumpet, and an American flag encased in a perThe Johnsons were nominat- sonalized, handcrafted wooden flag box was preed for assistance by longsented to Johnson by House time family friend Marion of Heroes Connecticut ExecJamrog. utive Director Carol May to “I’ve known these two for thank him for his service. more than 20 years and they “This is a really big thing for are the most giving, loving me,” said Johnson. “I never expected it.” For more information on House of Heroes Connecticut and to support the cause, visit hohct.org.

PMC donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar to DanaFarber as its largest single contributor, accounting for 55 percent of its Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the PMC has raised more than $114 million for Dana-Farber, bringing its 42year contribution to DanaFarber to $831 million. “We’re coming off of a record-breaking fundraising year for Dana-Farber, and we’re thrilled to be ‘back in the saddle’ this summer, bringing our PMC community together for our first traditional PMC weekend since 2019 with our sights set on making an even bigger impact in the fight against cancer,” said Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC. Founded in 1980, PMC has raised $831 million for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. It should be no surprise that the oldest still-operating amusement park in the country is home to some pretty astonishing attractions. While Lake Compounce may seem like an old classic when it comes to aquatic activity, the water park has definitely experienced some updates to give a fresh new feel to a family favorite. Before covering the new updates, it’s only fair to shout out the water park icons that live in the hearts of so many. From the Clipper Cove water playground to the Croc-O-Nile Lazy River, Lake Compounce essentially dominated the childhood summers of Connecticut’s millennial population – we can relive our glory days since the park is still home to these gems! sure to pack a light lunch if you opt for the tour – this three-hour jaunt includes a peaceful paddle on the river as well as a snack-and-swim break at Kelsey beach. Regardless of how you choose to spend the day, Branford River Paddlesports has a location and charm that no one can resist.

Honorable mentions To close off this piece, it seems wrong to not mention a couple of my local favorites! An unlikely honorable mention goes to Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort in Middlefield. Despite the wintery name, there’s a giant water tubing slide attraction that should not be missed. Also, Portland's Brownstone Quarry Adventure Sports Park shan’t go unmentioned. This unique oasis has a plethora of inflatables, rentals and activities that provide all-day entertainment. Fair warning – on hotter days, due to the brownstone landscape, the water in the quarry does tend to grow

Silver Sands State Park, 1 Silver Sands Parkway, Milford For sandy toes and a surprise sandbar, check out this glorious public beach and park! If you’re looking for boardwalks, a salty breeze, seagulls, and shells, Silver Sands State Park is the place for you. With over a half mile of public shoreline, the facilities and ambiance of Silver Sands is an excellent splash-around option. The sandbar, or tombolo, connects Charles Island to the beach and park. Don't miss the opportunity (during low-tide) to traverse the sandy path to explore the island. However, be warned. The Sound rises above the sandbar twice each day during high tide. This will leave you stuck on Charles Island, so plan accordingly. Parking is free for Connecticut registered vehicles, so if an out-of-state friend drives over to visit, make sure to take your wheels to the beach.
