Italian American Festival resumes downtown By Nadya Korytnikova Record-Journal staff

Over the weekend, the community came together, once again, to celebrate Italian American culture. Sponsored by Sons of Italy, Southington UNICO, and the women’s group Sorelle d’Italia, the annual Italian American Festival began Saturday and continued through Sunday evening on Center Street.

The event was canceled last year due to the pandemic. Organizers said they didn’t want another year to go by without a festival. “It’s to keep the tradition alive,” said David Zoni, UNICO’s representative to the festival committee. “What better way to celebrate our milestone birthday than getting in the holiday spirit a little earlier this year,” general manager Larry Gorneault Jr. said in a press release. “Through our partnership with the Connecticut Society of Santas and its Santa Cares program, our goal is to help increase donations to the local food banks and help support our communities.” About 50 Santas and helpers walked around the park dressed in summer attire, taking photos with visitors, going on rides and passing out small gifts. The dose of Christmas on a warm July day caught some off guard. “... I was so surprised to see him,” said Addison Melo. Melo, in the park with a group of friends, took a photo with Santa. The Connecticut Society of Santas is a nonprofit organization with a mission to spread holiday cheer, according to a press release. Its Santa Cares program raises money for food banks, including those in Southington and Bristol.

Lake Compounce offered free parking to guests who donated non-perishable and canned goods for the food banks. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Lake Compounce for our 2021 SantaCon and the park’s Christmas in July event,” Santa George, president of the Connecticut Society of Santas said in a press release. “After taking a break from our in person Santa Workshop in 2020, we are pleased to be back in full force…. “The best part of this is seeing all the kids and parents smiling faces,” he added. Robert Roman, a guest at the park, heard about the event online and drove from New York. Dressed in festive socks, clothes and a Santa hat, he excitedly greeted Santa.

Bond commission approves $775K for trail project Associated Press

The Connecticut State Bond Commission approved $1.1 billion in projects on Friday, July 23. It marked the first meeting of the new fiscal year, which began July 1, and only the second during 2021. Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont, who chairs the commission and has imposed a so-called “debt diet” for state borrowing, suggested he’s easing up on that stance. “I’d say it’s a pretty robust agenda for what could be a pretty robust year when it comes to bonding,” he said. “The reason being, I think this is a unique time to be making investments in the state right now.”

Among the grant funding requests approved was $775,000 for urban bikeway, pedestrian connectivity, trails and alternative mobility programs at the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail connections to Norton Park in Plainville. A news release from the Connecticut Department of Transportation, dated June 2, states, “The purpose of the project is to is to construct a multi-use trail known as the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail (FCHT) through Plainville in order to close the final remaining gap in the Connecticut section of trail. The Connecticut share of the FCHT consists of a 54mile section connecting New Haven through Suffield, ter-

SOUTHINGTONCarol Ann Bak, 75, of Southington, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021, after a brief and courageous fight with cancer. She was the wife of Paul Bak, Sr., for 55 years. She was born November 30, 1945, in New Britain, the daughter of Joseph & Genevieve Martinelli. Carol graduated from Pulaski High School, where she met the love of her life, Paul. When they were first married, they lived in New Britain before building their home in Southington, where they resided for over 50 years and where they raised both their children. After raising her children, Carol decided to return to the workforce where she worked at Johnson & Johnson & Smiths Medical until retiring. Carol took such pride in her job as well as organizing trips and parties for the company, especially the Fall Fling at the Aqua Turf. Carol loved to cook and entertain; her house was always decorated beautifully for the holidays and the aromas coming from her kitchen made your mouth water. She was known for her famous sausage breads which she would give to family, friends & even strangers - one bite and you were hooked. Carol also made homemade pierogis at Christmas time, each one of us had a job, Gloria boiled them, Chrissy made hors-d’oeuvres and poured wine but most of all she loved to make

special treats for her grandchildren. Paul & Carol owned a second home in Maine where she loved to spend her days visiting the local shops in Skowhegan where she made a lot of friends and touched many lives. She enjoyed sitting around the fire pit with newly made friends & her family enjoying the peaceful beauty with a glass of red wine and delicious food on the grill. Her vegetable garden and flower garden were masterpieces, her time and effort yielded the most beautiful vegetables and flowers. She planted the garden so meticulously spacing her plants apart using a yardstick. Saturday’s were a special time with her sister Gloria, yardwork, glasses of wine, listening to Rod Stewart and light-hearted conversation on the patio. Carol loved to travel, whether it was going to the Cape with Elaine & Peggy or the annual girls’ trips with her daughter Chrissy, sister Gloria &

Patty, they were always full of shenanigans and tons of laughs. But most of all she loved the special trips she would take with her daughter including her most recent trip to Aruba. No matter where Carol went she touched lives and forged long lasting friendships. In addition to her husband Paul and their beautiful dog Shiloh, she is survived by her loving daughter Chrissy Bacon and her husband Christopher of Kensington, Paul Jr., and his wife Lynn of Kensington, sisters Gloria Martinelli of New Britain and Gayle Nesta and her husband Rocky of New Britain. She will be terribly missed by her grandchildren Michael and Matthew Bacon of Kensington & Brayden Bak and Michael Agrusso of Kensington, sister-in-law Elizabeth Bak. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She is predeceased by her parents and brotherin-laws John Bak, Sr., of Southington and Thomas Bak of Plainville. At Carol’s request, there will be no services. Donations may be made in her honor to the Southington Bread for Life https:// southingtonbreadforlife. org or an organization of the donor’s choice. The family would like to thank all the Doctors & Nurses & Hospice care on N5 at the The Hospital of Central Connecticut for the special care and compassion given to Carol and her family.
