School staff recognized for contact tracing work School administrators recently recognized the efforts of staff who have taken time out on weekends and evenings to conduct contact tracing for positive COVID-19 cases that have come in after hours through the district’s self-reporting form.
“People are checking a hotline and a portal every evening and every weekend for reported cases and then making contact with building administrators and contact tracing as appropriate,” said Superintendent of Schools Steve Madancy said last week. “Essentially being on call every day, all day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year since last March and I
think it's a true commitment and testament to their professionalism and dedication to the district.” Parents can use the hotline or form on the district’s website to report if a child is showing symptoms, has tested positive for COVID-19 or if a family member has tested positive.

This house on North Main Street in Southington, has been destroyed by fire.
The North Main Street property has been vacant since the pizza restaurant was damaged in a fire in 2016. “We’re very happy to see the property be redeveloped,” said Economic Development Coordinator Lou Perillo.

When the Southington boys soccer team takes the field for warmups before home games, things are loose. Trendy music plays from the press box speakers: Lil Baby, Meek Mill, J. Cole. Whistles from the JV game on the field just behind the Fontana Field bleachers are audible. All things considered, it’s essentially a typical soccer game day. Except for one thing. The blue-clad Blue Knights wear limegreen practice shirts as they jog around the field, stretch, juggle soccer balls, run through short-passing drills and take shots on net.

“I think right now the way things are, it’s allowing all our schools to stay open and in person,” Madancy said.
Board of Education Chairperson Terri Carmody said the district’s number one goal is keeping children,
“They’re doing a marvelous job and I know that it is taking a lot of time for them to do all that; and that's while trying to run a very large school system,” she said. “So we as the board (are) very pleased with the administration and what they’re doing for contact tracing.”
In one incident, a positive case was reported the evening before Thanksgiving. The contact tracing investigation identified him as having been in contact with the individual right away, allowing him to quarantine before the holiday.

”It’s a very prominent spot on Route 10, obviously it’s been an eyesore with the fire,” Perillo said, “but we’re extremely pleased to learn that a brick and mortar bank is coming into our market.”
The new development would demolish the vacant Renaldo’s building at 378 N. Main St. as well as a two story vinyl sided building abutting it to the north and replace them with a 4,000 square foot building. The bank would take up half that space and face the street, while the two retail storefronts would be behind it. “There's a multiplier effect with new construction and usually banks build a higher per square foot cost building, so it's something that generally kind of ups the game if you will and puts more pressure on like businesses to kind of dress up their place as well,” Perillo said.

The after-hours reporting options were introduced last year and cases have continued to be reported at approximately the same rate as last spring, Madancy said.
Hatton Elementary School Principal Robert Garry said the process has helped to allow schools to stay open by augmenting the district's other precautions, including sanitizing regimens, classroom cohorting and mask wearing.

Given the pandemic and the disruptions the banking industry was facing already, Perillo said Ion Bank’s decision to build a new branch in town shows that they have confidence in the local economy. “I'm obviously biased, but I think you have some very intelligent and hardworking business owners,” he said. “They were able to adapt during the pandemic...” Although this is Ion Bank’s first location in town, Southington Chamber of Commerce President Barbara Coleman-Hekeler said they’ve been active members for years. Based out of Naugatuck, the bank has 20
locations across Connecticut. “We're excited that Ion bank put in an application to put in a brick and mortar location here in Southington,” she said. The property at 378 N. Main St. is currently owned by Shawn Daigle, who purchased it after a fire forced Renaldo’s Pizza to close in 2016. Renaldo’s relocated to Queen Street. “I'm delighted, that building has been an eyesore for quite some time,” said Mike DelSanto, chairperson of the town Economic Development Strike Committee.

Soccer From A1
At first glance, the deviation from the school color might appear to be just a fashion statement. Practice shirts are sometimes a way for teams to express themselves since uniform colors are tightly regimented. Then you see the words on the back: “Hustle for Hannah.” Hannah Sousa is a former Southington High School student and soccer player who graduated two years ago. She’s the older sister of current Southington player Trevor Sousa. For a second time, she’s battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“It’s a family, so when somebody in our family is hurting and sick, we need to do a little to take care of them,” said Betsy McCain Schroeder, who was volunteering at the tent. It was an easy decision for the booster club to set up a fundraiser for Hannah. The inspiration for how the club would go about it was even easier. “We just saw her summer soccer games and we were like ‘Hmm, we need to do a little something for the family to help and make them a little more comfortable, and to spread the word,’” Schroeder said. “When we

told the girls booster club, they jumped right on and their kids ordered shirts, and they ordered bracelets to sell for Hannah.” While Schroeder talked, Mary-Beth Sousa stood no more than 10 feet away. Even though Hannah has dealt with leukemia in some capacity for several years, Mary-Beth still seemed in awe of the idea that others would go so far out of their way to help her family. As she spoke, Mary-Beth’s voice faded in and out. When talking about the uncomfortable details of her daughter’s diagnosis, such

Hannah was originally diagnosed in January 2018. After two and a half years of treatment, she achieved remission and, in the fall of 2020, headed to Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. Hannah was a nursing student “because, hello, you spend that much time in a hospital and it makes sense you might want to give back a little bit,” her mother Mary-Beth Sousa jokingly said.
Not only are her brother and his teammates wearing those “Hustle for Hannah” shirts, so are volunteers and fans in the stands. “It’s awesome,” Hannah said. “I really thank them a lot for doing this for me.” At a recent game, just to the left of the ramp on the way up the bleachers, there was a pop-up tent with a few people underneath it selling candy bars, drinks and Tshirts in an effort to raise money for Hannah while she undergoes treatment.

Unfortunately, the cancer returned in January 2021 and Hannah has been receiving treatment since. But battling through something tough is made much easier when you have the support of your community, and that’s what Hannah Sousa has in Southington.

as her recovery after receiving a bone marrow transplant in April 2021, she was quiet and subdued. But when she talked about how the community rallied around Hannah, she lit up. Text messages she received from teachers at the school encouraging Hannah were exciting for her to talk about. The fact that the boy’s soccer team wore the “Hustle For Hannah” shirts to school that day made her glow with pride.
The fundraiser and sea of lime-green shirts were almost enough to make one forget that there was even a soccer game going on. The Blue Knights were hosting Conard. With less than a minute left, they trailed 3-1. Trevor Sousa was fouled just outside the box and awarded a free kick. Precious little time was left on the scoreboard. Trevor, assertive yet calm, collected himself and nailed the kick from the right side of the box into the left side of the net.
showered down from the stands. It wasn’t quite the fairy tale ending that you would see in the movies. Southington still lost 3-2, but with fans in the stands wearing his sister’s name on their backs, Trevor scored an unforgettable goal.

Magaro attested to Trevor’s character as well as that of the rest of the team, saying that the extra motivation from Hannah will power them through the athletic year. “We’re going to fight for her and we’re going to fight for the Sousa family,” Magaro said. “Trevor’s not going to back down for a single minute this year.” Trevor was in high school by the time Hannah, after missing her sophomore and junior years to her first goround with leukemia, returned for her senior year.
“When we were growing up, we were always helping each other,” Trevor said. “We were never really fighting.” Hannah’s fight is far from over. She still makes monthly visits to the Jimmy Fund Clinic in Boston and goes to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center once a week for treatment. But before the SouthingtonConard game started, Schroeder reminded those around her that “tough times don’t last; tough people do.” That was the mantra of the day and it is Hannah’s slogan.

Stretching is an excellent complement to chiropractic care. When combined with simple stretches and low-impact exercises, chiropractic patients often find that their injuries heal faster, their pain is reduced, and they simply feel better. As a natural part of the aging process, our muscles begin to tighten. Inhibited range of motion and joint stiffness make normal daily activities more difficult, however, everyday life shouldn’t come to a standstill. Stretching regularly can help the body regain lost flexibility. The more stretching, the more the muscles will get used to those movements. Thus, an improved range of motion will start to be seen, along with better blood circulation, muscle tension relief, improved posture, more energy, and better sleep.
ROOFING, SIDING, STORM DAMAGE Trust LA Rich LLC With Your Next Roofing & Siding Job In Connecticut!
The wonderful thing about stretching is that you can do it just about anywhere when you have time. Moreover, you do not need any fancy weights or machines to get moving. And because you are only using your bodyweight, the risk of injury is minimized. Stretching is important in order to keep your muscle tissue primed and ready to tackle the day. To schedule an appointment for chiropractic care, please call 860-621-2225. Our clinic is located at 200 Queen St., Southington. P.S. Electrical stimulation uses a low frequency electrical current to stimulate muscle to reduce inflammation.

Parish From A18
The St. Thomas closure is part of a larger effort to consolidate the five Catholic parishes in Southington. Four other parishes in town, St. Aloysius, Immaculate Conception, Mary Our Queen and St. Dominic, will remain open for St. Thomas parishioners.
The consolidation plan could include the demolition of the St. Thomas building to make room for the new, larger church. That prospect angered some parishioners who met earlier this month to oppose those plans. Fasulo hoped that Blair or other archdiocese leaders would help prevent closures and the St. Thomas demolition but isn’t optimistic now.
Thomas closure. Elliott said the archdiocese defers to plans made by local church leaders about parish consolidations. During a meeting earlier this year, Cronin said parishioners voted to accept the closure plans. Elliott said the recent petition and letter from Fasulo and others hasn’t changed what’s already in motion.

Cronin could not be reached for comment Thursday. He said the consolidation of parishes was prompted by a lack of priests but could also help energize local Catholics and bring together parishioners and programs.
“I want to make sure with all of this that we will have community involvement, community input,” she said. “I want to make sure that we’re not just checking the box.” Jim Morelli, a town councilor and former Planning and Zoning Commission member, said he worked with Planimetrics on the plan of conservation and development. He supported the town’s choice of the company and said they were professional and helpful. “I think this is an excellent selection,” Morelli said.
Final mass A decommissioning mass will take place at St. Thomas on Sunday. Fasulo said he “absolutely” won’t be in attendance. “If I attend that mass, it’s like I agree with that’s happening, and I’m not,” he said. Once the church is decommissioned, Fasulo said it’ll likely be harder to reverse the decision or save the building.

Bob Hammersley, Planning and Zoning Commission chairman, said the plan could help the town approach affordable housing in a more comprehensive way. Some recent housing applications have included affordable components. An age-restricted housing zone created several years ago includes an affordable housing requirement. The state wants 10% of a town’s housing stock to be affordable as defined by state statute and based on median incomes.

ELECTION 2021 / SOUTHINGTON BOARD OF EDUCATION
Libertarian board candidate calls for meeting on masks By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
Town hall meeting on masks
A Board of Education candidate wants school and state leaders to meet with parents to answer questions about the student mask mandate.
Espada and others have attended school board meetings for months to oppose the mask requirement. They feel masks are a hardship for students and questioned their effectiveness when used incorrectly by young students.
Angelica Espada, a Libertarian candidate, said the state shouldn’t be forcing students to wear masks. “I think that everyone has a right to choose to wear a mask or not, to choose how they think it’s best to protect their families,” Espada said during the Sept. 23 school board meeting. “Where there is risk, there should be choice.” She requested a special meeting with the local Board of Education, Gov. Ned Lamont and local and state health directors. Espada wants the meeting “to fully inform the parents and the public of the proper donning and doffing procedures for a specific medical mask.” Other parents and residents opposed to the student mask mandate have spoken at recent school board meetings. Local school officials said they’re bound by state decisions on the mask issue. Espada petitioned onto the November ballot.
Board of Education members of both parties have said Lamont’s executive orders supercede any local action on mask requirements. James Chrzanowski, a Republican running for reelection, also had questions about the mask mandate but didn’t think state officials would attend a meeting on the topic. “If it were up to me, I think they should answer for some of the things they’ve done,” Chrzanowski said. “They should come out, but I don’t think they’re going to.” He said bringing Lamont and health officials to Southington could end the same way as a similar meeting in Cheshire. During that August meeting, opponents of Lamont’s mandates and pandemic orders shouted him down, causing him to leave the meeting.
Say
hello
Lamont signed an executive order that requires masks to be worn in schools until at least Sept. 30, when his emergency powers are set to expire. It remains uncertain what will happen after that date. Lamont is seeking an extension of his emergency powers. Chrzanowski said constituents have been “vocal” on the mask issue. “I think some folks don’t understand it’s not under our control and I don’t know what to do about it,” he said. “We do what the state tells us.”
“The board Espada should be a non-partisan board. We should concentrate on what is best educationally and keeping children safe.”
Unanswered questions
‘Not a very civil time’ Board of Education Chairwoman Terri Carmody, who changed her party affiliation this year from Republican to Democrat, is also running for re-election. She had no interest in calling a special meeting since the mask issue isn’t one that’s determined by local authorities.
Last year, Carmody wanted all board members to wear masks during meetings. Joe Baczewski, the Republican vice chairman, declined to do so when spaced appropriately from others. The disagreement prompted the board to return to remote meetings.
Carmody said the mask issue has been distracting from what should be the board’s primary concern.
Carmody said if students were required to wear masks, board members meeting in a town building should do so as well even if the measure wasn’t required.

He sympathized with Espada’s frustration at not getting answers from state officials. He’s been looking to get data behind some decisions, but said he’s been ignored. One of his specific questions involved the effectiveness of different types of masks. “A cloth mask is just as effective as an N95 (mask)? Any old mask will do?” Baczewski said. “What’s the actual data behind it? “I can’t get the governor’s office to return questions I have via emails,” he added. “You have parents who are genuinely concerned and they want answers.” jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

YAHYA KARDAD
SAVANNAH BERNABUCCI
The guy with the celebratory name delivered a celebratory game last Thursday at Fitzgerald Field. Yahya Kardad, senior midfielder and captain of the Lyman Hall boys soccer team, notched a hat trick to lead coach Arnie Jandreau’s Trojans to their first victory of the season, 7-1 over East Haven. This is the second turn in the Athlete of the Week spotlight for the native Moroccan, who joined LH last year as a junior.
Naturally, we weren’t surprised. Savannah Bernabucci is, after all, the reigning Record-Journal Girls Volleyball Player of the Year. But 24 kills? That’s throwing down. Bernabucci racked up those 24 kills in Maloney’s 3-2 win Friday over Platt. The senior also had 15 digs. It was her second double-double of the season. Against Plainville, Bernabucci bagged 20 kills and 10 digs. She’s had 16 kills on three other occasions.
MARCELLO PANNONE
KATE CASORLA
Yahya Kardad wasn’t the only area soccer player with a hat trick Thursday. In Ramland, Marcello Pannone found the back of the net three times for his third career hat trick in Cheshire’s 6-1 win over North Haven. With those three goals, the senior matched his jersey number with six on the season, and the Rams were only five games into the campaign. Cheshire stood at 3-1-1 going into Tuesday’s showdown with Guilford.
She’s the middle child and she’s in the middle of everything for the Lady Titans. Katelyn Casorla, one of three Casorla sisters on the Sheehan soccer team, scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Titans went 2-0-1 last week to boost their record to 3-2-1. The junior midfielder scored in the 2-0 win over East Haven, set up Talia Crispino in the 1-0 win over Shelton and had a goal and an assist in a 2-2 tie with Foran.
ANTWONE SANTIAGO
TATIANA ROBLE
Antwone Santiago was on most everyone’s “Players to Watch” list heading into the 2021 football season. If he wasn’t, he is now. Platt’s 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior safety/wide receiver scored three touchdowns in Platt’s 4314 win Friday in Enfield and scored them in all manner of ways: 60-yard punt return, 20-yard reception, 7-yard run. A college prospect, Santiago has so far gotten offers from URI, Bryant and CCSU.
After taking off her junior year amid the pandemic, Tatiana Robles is back in action for Wilcox and the Indians are certainly the better for it. A varsity athlete in volleyball and basketball dating back to her freshman year, Robles recorded eight kills, seven service points and three blocks in the Tribe’s 3-1 V-ball victory Friday versus Norwich Tech. Earlier in the season, she planted six aces against both Whitney and Goodwin Tech.

Serafino plans to stay active in the community and pursue his interests in biking and kayaking. “We’re going to miss Ron and everybody, but I’m happy they’re going to take some time and just be able to be together as a family,” said Town Council Chairperson Victoria Triano. After serving generations of families for 65 years, Serafino Pharmacy may have said farewell to day-to-day business, but its legacy will always have a place in local history.

Earlier this year, a developer sued the town after planners reduced the size of a downtown affordable housing project from 30 to 22 units.
