Support for Kendall as she battles cancer

Ways to get your apple fritter fix this fall

By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

The cancellation of the annual Apple Harvest Festival this year due to COVID-19 brought along the cancellation of the beloved Zion Lutheran Church apple fritter booth as well.

Kendall Lord played on the swings and danced to live music at YMCA Camp Sloper Sunday, while hundreds of friends, family and members of the local community raised money for the local 5-year-old’s cancer treatment. Those in attendance at Sunday’s fundraiser have formed an extended family that’s provided the support needed to help get Kendall and her family through the treatment thus far, said Danielle Lord, the child’s mother. “Definitely people helping fight for a

little girl,” Lord said, looking over the pavilion crowded with people wearing shirts emblazoned with her daughter’s name. The family expected around 500 people would attend the event, spread across four hours to encourage social distancing.

Local businesses and individuals donated enough raffle prizes to cover a half dozen picnic tables, the band Shed Rats provided live music and Tops Supermarket donated lunch.

For 50 years, people lined up sometimes for more than an hour for the church’s famous apple fritters. This year, get your fritter fix at the following restaurants, or make them at home. See Fritters, A4

HQ’s transfer station will allow garbage collection trucks to dump trash into larger trucks that will take it to plants in the region. More efficient trash collection helps keeps prices from rising too much, Perry said.

Paula Burton, Realtor, GRI, ABR

Perry said trash incinerators in the state are shutting down and that fees for dumping trash have “skyrocketed” over the past five years. Remaining incinerator plants often have lines of trash trucks waiting to dump their loads since they can’t handle the volume of garbage.

Town to replace leaky police station roof By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Town leaders approved the replacement of the police department roof, plagued with leaks soon after its installation 18 years ago. The Town Council voted eight to one, Sept. 21, in favor of giving the work to BMP Construction of Brookfield. Roof replacement at the 69 Lazy Lane station will cost $418,000.

Repair or retrofit wasn’t a viable option, according to The Garland Company.

According to the Public Works Department, work should begin later this month and finish in midNovember.

A town building maintenance committee addressed leaks at the building along with other issues in 2011. The new roof will consist of 25-year architectural shingles. Duct work on the flat portion of the police department roof will be reconfigured so it won’t be sitting on the roof, a source of some of

types of work with established prices and BMP won the bid in 2018. The company submitted a price of just over $380,000 with a contingency of $37,000.

Public Works Director An-

nette Turnquist recommended BMP, saying the company has already done work for the town. Victoria Triano, Town Council chairwoman, said using the council of governments process saves some costs as See Roof, A5

Rather than hold its own bid process, the town chose BMP Construction though the Capital Region Council of Governments. Companies can bid their mark-up on

The Garland Company, a roofing company, found 12 to 15 active leaks in the police station’s shingle roof during a January 2019 inspection. The company found improper ridge and valley work, ice damming, nails backing out and possible improper roof ventilation. Nearly flat areas of the roof were shingled, an improper material according to

the company.

Parties, weddings and “anything goes” weekends could end at a DeFashion Street home if a judge agrees to town officials’ request for an injunction.

The request for an injunction follows nearly 20 police calls for noisy parties, loud music or vandalism at the 10,000-square-foot mansion.

25, at his business, Bedford Bagel & Bakery in New York, Levine said he was too busy to talk about the case. His son, Adam Levine, said this week that the 375 DeFashion St. property is a family house since they have rental property in the area. The family’s rental properties and bakery were struggling, which prompted Adam Levine to start renting the Southington house. He hoped to reach an agreement with the town to continue rentals with better supervision. “We’re all trying to do the right thing, we’re not trying to do anything illegal,” Adam Levine said last week.

Is 375 DeFashion St. a boarding house? Town zoning regulations consider a dwelling a boarding house if the owner occupies a part of it and offers room or board to more than two people. Boarding houses are allowed with a permit in some residential zones, but 375 DeFashion St. isn’t in one of them.

Bedard also included advertisements for “anything goes weekend” parties at the house in his request for an injunction. Men had to pay $100, couples $75 and single women were free. Rooms started at $150 per night. Be-

One such party in June had such loud music that the police were called and found the driveway lined with 30 cars. Adam Levine, the organizer of the weekends, told

police he’d turn down the music, according to a police report. On Thursday, Adam Levine said he’s had events with about five friends from the New York City area. Each of his family members have cars which fill the driveway, he said. Adam Levine and his house See House, A9

Even if allowed by a town permit, a tourist home or a boarding house can’t have more than six people according to town regulations attached to the court filing. The town’s complaint references police reports on noise complaints from parties with as many as 200 people this past summer.

dard also included a list of rules for such parties that included such requirements for participants as bringing their own sex accessories, getting tested for COVID-19 and shaving.

He complained that the town was singling him out while other homeowners are able to rent their homes through Airbnb, an online short-term rental service.

stopping to say hello to her. “She just radiates love and people float to her,” Danielle Lord said. Mary Peterman, Kendall’s pre-school teacher, said there were concerns about Kendall returning to school this fall with a compromised immune system amid the coronavirus pandemic, but her doctors assured them that she needed to see her friends. School has become a second home for her and many of her teachers and support staff were present at Sunday’s fundraiser. "It's been a remarkable rollercoaster ride, but Kendall's strength and determination has inspired all of us,” Peterman said. “Nothing slowed her down — whenever she was out for a bout of chemo, she came back and didn't lose skills, just raring to go and ready to learn. She is amazing.”

If you fall asleep with one hand tucked up under your head, you may awaken with numbness in your hand, the result of your head exerting pressure upon the “median nerve” as it passes through the wrist’s carpal tunnel. Nerves are also susceptible to compression as they emerge from the spinal cord. “Pinched nerves,” as they are popularly referred to, can also produce “pins and needles” tingling, pain, a burning sensation, and/or muscle weakness. While most cases of pinched nerves resolve on their own, moderate and severe cases that are left untreated can cause lasting damage. For this reason, it is important to report prolonged symptoms of nerve compression to the chiropractor, who can make a diagnosis and provide treatment.

Laura Spagnoletti, Kendall’s special education teacher, said one of the child’s favorite parts of the day is their morning meetings, when she’s able to pick a song and dance. Kendall loves anything related to music and is always in motion.

Chiropractic care for a pinched nerve includes re-aligning the spine to get you back to optimal health. There are many stress factors that can cause a pinched nerve, and chiropractors specialize in reducing that stress to treat pinched nerves as well as prevent them. To learn more, please call our clinic at 860-621-2225 or make an appointment to see us at 200 Queen St., Southington. We incorporate 20 different chiropractic techniques to help return your body to a state of proper function that we call “homeostasis.”

“We love having her,” Spagnoletti said. “She makes us smile and laugh every day.”

P.S. Nerves can become compressed due to repetitive injury, disc herniation, weight gain, or pregnancy.

This week, Kendall returned to the hospital for another round of the same intensive treatment that she was prescribed last year, however, because Kendall has developed additional risk factors her prognosis has worsened.

pursue their education and interests, and he would often volunteer to coach their sports teams growing up. As his children reached adulthood, he loved spending time with them, his wife and his grandchildren, especially at Poppy’s Landing, their lake house in Onalaska, TX. Ron is beloved for his kindness, generosity, and genuineness. He would go out of his way to help even a stranger without hesitation, even in death. Ron’s final act on Earth was to donate various tissues from his body to help people suffering from cancer, traumatic injuries, blindness, burns, and other ailments. In total, his selfless gifts will improve the lives of nearly 50 complete strangers and their families. Besides his wife, Ron is survived by his daughter Amy Bojarczuk and her husband Raphael of Tomball, TX; his son Christopher James Casner of Baltimore, MD; and his son Dr. Michael Casner and his fiancé Patrick Tobin of Kansas City, MO; his grandchildren Shawn, Jessica, Sofia and Anastasia; his sister Pamela Casner of Narragansett, R.I.; his sister Luanne Borawski

and her husband Paul of Westbrook, CT; his sisterin-law Teresa Brown and her husband Robert of Coventry, CT; his brotherin-law Michael Wrona and his wife Barbara of Narragansett, R.I.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their children, all of whom he loved dearly. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, funeral services were held privately on Monday, September 28. Knowing so many people loved Ron, those wishing to pay their respects joined his family by holding a moment of prayer or silence at 11 a.m., EST, the day of his funeral. Services were recorded and are available from the Plantsville Funeral Home website (https://client.tribucast. c o m / t c i d / 3 8 2 3 16 0 3 ) . SOUTHINGTON Ronald “Ron” James Casner, 65, of Castle Rock, CO, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2020. Ron was born in Southington, CT, to the late James and Pauline (Bassola) Casner on December 26, 1954. He spent his entire childhood in Southington where he was a standout on the baseball field as a hardthrowing pitcher. He went on to play for the University of Connecticut at Waterbury before transferring to UConn’s main campus in Storrs where he graduated in 1976. Ron remained one of the Huskies’ biggest lifelong fans, particularly of the men’s and women’s basketball teams. In 1978, Ron married the love of his life, Sandra (Wrona) Casner of Rockville, CT. Shortly thereafter, they would celebrate the births of their children Amy (1979), Christopher (1983) and Michael (1984). Ron’s career in commercial insurance allowed his family to experience much of the country, living in Connecticut, Michigan, Indiana, Louisiana, California, Maryland, and Massachusetts. After the children went to college, he and Sandy continued their life as nomads living in other states such as Arizona, Texas and Colorado. He had retired in May as Chief Underwriting Officer at Arrowhead General Insurance Agency after a successful 44-year career. In addition to the UConn athletic teams, Ron was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Boston Red Sox. His biggest source of pride, however, was watching his children

Decision time on former Lincoln campus Dennis Terwilliger, an owner of the college property, said efforts to find a buyer or develop the site commercially have failed. He believes that allowing local developer Mark Lovley to build homes is the best plan for the property.

The plan right now is to build 83 homes on the site, as proposed during a recent hearing. This would allow for 83 age-restricted ranch homes on the 32-acre site — almost three times the 28 units allowed by the current zoning. It should be noted, though, that the proposed cluster housing would allow for greater open space than the numbers might suggest. Some neighbors are op-

posed to this plan, but Southington, like many other towns, is facing the question of whether continuing to develop in the “suburban sprawl” pattern of the past (current zoning requires more than an acre of land per home on that site) is a viable plan. Other neighbors recognize the need for housing that would allow older residents to remain in town even

VINNY IANNUZZI asks: Every time Connecticut raises taxes more people leave the state. It is obvious the more we tax the worse it gets. These taxes hurt the middle class and poor more than anybody. Connecticut has both a high cost of housing and living. Also, we are the # 1 worst state to retire in.

Since taxing is not working please be specific on your plan to cut spending which seems to be the only way out of our downward spiral.
