Food drive: This is a critical year

ELECTION 2020

Partial results favor GOP By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Unofficial results showed solid leads for local Republican state candidates on Tuesday, but town election workers said they still needed to tally about 1,000 absentee ballots cast in the past few days.

Candidates neither admitted defeat nor claimed victory Tuesday night, although Sampson was encouraged by the available results. Jack Perry, the Democratic challenger in the 16th State Senate district, speaks during the Democratic election viewing party at the See Election, A13 Masonic Lodge on Nov. 3.

If ever there was a time to lend a helping hand, this is the year to help others during the holidays. And Hartford Restaurant Group’s Que Whiskey Kitchen is stepping up for the second year in a row to host a drive-through FoodShare Turkey Drive on Thursday, Nov. 12. “We at Bread For Life thank everyone in advance for their generosity,” said the non-profit’s director Donna Ayer. “This year, more than ever, we are thankful to everyone for their support of our mission to ensure no one goes hungry in our community.”

Rob Sampson, Republican incumbent in the 16th state Senate district, held a 5,000-vote lead over Democratic challenger Jack Perry. In that race, absentee ballots from the Cheshire portion of the district hadn’t been reported as of press time.

“I really feel like I had more support than ever,” Sampson said. “I feel like we did a good job.”

Judge issues order against party house By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

house rentals to more than two people.

After the owner of a suburban mansion used for parties and “anything goes” weekends failed to show up in court, a state judge issued a temporary injunction against large gatherings or rentals of the property.

Despite proper notification, Morgan wrote in her injunction that Levine failed to appear for a court hearing.

Town officials sought the injunction after a host of neighbor complaints and police visits for raucous parties and events that defied pandemic restrictions. Gary Levine owns the 10,000 square-foot house he bought in 2013 that’s now appraised for more than $1 million. He took no action and didn’t appear in court to contest the town’s request for an injunction. Late last month, Superior Court Judge Lisa Morgan prohibited any gatherings of more than 25 people at 375 DeFashion St. as well as any

month that they'd been mislead by Airbnb tenants who said they would abide by the 16-person limit, but then brought large groups that trashed the house. Town attorneys also included advertisements for "anything goes weekend" parties at the house in their request for an injunction. Men had to pay $100, couples $75 and single women were free. Rooms started at $150 per night. A list of rules included requirements for participants, such as bringing their own sex accessories, getting tested for COVID-19 and shaving.

Levine lives in New York and runs Bedford Bagel & Bakery. He had little to say when asked about the injunction. “You’d be taking that up with my son Adam,” Gary Levine said. Adam Levine did not return a call for comment. He’s described the DeFashion Street house as a family property in a portfolio of rentals in the state.

Town zoning regulations consider a dwelling a boarding house if the owner occupies a part of it and offers room or board to more than two people. Boarding houses

are allowed with a permit in some residential zones, but 375 DeFashion St. isn't in one of them. Even if allowed by a town permit, a tourist home or a boarding house can't have more than six people, according to town regulations attached to the court filing.

The town's request for a court injunction references police reports on noise complaints from parties with as many as 200 people this past summer. Gov. Ned Lamont's executive orders limit outdoor gatherings to 100 people and indoor parties to 25. Adam Levine and his house manager, Fatih Saat, said last

One party in June had such loud music that the police were called and found the driveway lined with 30 cars. Adam Levine, the organizer of the weekends, told police he'd turn down the music, according to a police report. Last month, Adam Levine said he stopped renting the house, losing out on thousands of dollars. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

Saint Paul School in Kensington continues with reopening success! It has been 10 weeks since Saint Paul School has reopened during the COVID pandemic. The students are back in their classrooms full time, 5 days a week with in person teacher instruction. School families, teachers, administration, and the school nurse have worked together to provide a safe return so the students can enjoy learning in class safely. Students in PK-Grade 8 wear facemasks with breaks throughout the day and desk shields in place for each student in Grades K-5. The school’s campus has allowed students to enjoy outdoor classes on their Parish Green and under their gazebo. Most recently the school installed Wi-Fi outdoors so students can complete some of their assignments online while learning outdoors. The school is pleased to share that each classroom breaks into even smaller groups so they can enjoy participating in art, music, gym, library and Spanish classes. The art and physical education teacher have enjoyed holding classes outdoors as well. Students are successfully adapting to their new desk shields in Grades K-5, and our middle school students are safely able to transition during different academic classes to maintain normalcy in their school routine. Saint Paul’s has added a fourth lunch wave so students can still enjoy lunch in the cafeteria. Lunch tables are spread out and students are placed socially distant at each table. Students can still enjoy purchasing hot lunch from the schools full kitchen. During each lunch wave, classrooms and the school playground are cleaned and disinfected by the school’s cleaning company. Prior to the school reopening in August all student bathrooms were renovated providing touchless toilets, sinks, soap and paper towel dispenses. Students are also enjoying new touchless water bottle fill stations throughout the school. The school community has safely held school masses outdoors on the Parish Green. Students have just ended participating in cross country, holding virtual meets and golf lessons that took place at Timerberlin Golf Club. Saint Paul School is blessed to have recently been awarded the HOPES Grant from the Hartford Archdiocese, which made it possible for the school to purchase four Smart TVs. These have been installed in grade 4, Spanish, middle school math and science classrooms. Additional TV’s for the other classrooms will be purchased in the future. The teachers and students are thrilled to be using the newest state-of-the-art technology!

"Returning to St. Paul School after months away has been a seamless transition. Nothing replaces the in-person, student/teacher contact. The relationships they establish each day they are in school is so important. It has provided normalcy during an uncertain time in our world. We are grateful for the benefits of a caring, Catholic education for our daughter. We are also grateful for the efforts of the administration, teachers, Franciscan Friars, and all of the support staff at the school and the work they have done to create a safe, healthy, and educational environment. We appreciate and value the care given to our most precious gifts, our children!"

Community Residences, learned about the drive in Southington from a colleague. Ward was among the volunteers who helped sort the donations earlier this month. In an email, Ward explained the agency often encounters children “coming into care with little or no belongings.” Many of those children, Ward explained, arrive into foster care placements directly from a hospital or a residential or juvenile detention center. The care kits could “benefit any child going into a new placement,” she wrote. “Placements are often emotionally taxing on foster youths. They are often exhausted, physically or emotionally, and don't want to worry about having to start unpacking their belongings right away. Having a first night kit could be so beneficial to these kids. It gives these kids one less thing to worry about in a new home.”

More often than not, a child arrives at a new home in the evening with few items of their own and with little time for their foster parents to prepare for their arrival.

“... It sounds so simple. We take it for granted they are going to have warm, clean pajamas ... these kids don’t have that,” she said.

This, Zabel said, would give foster parents extra time to gather other items for their new foster child.

Just as important is packing them in a backpack or a vinyl bag. For a child whose life is suddenly disrupted by separation, sometimes involving abuse or neglect, the dignity of receiving a kit in a bag that feels like theirs, as opposed to in a trash bag or shopping bag, can make a small improvement, Zabel contends.

“The Bachelorette” is a reality television dating show that began in 2003. A spinoff of “The Bachelor,” the “Bachelorette” lives in a mansion with about 25 love interests. This season, 39-year-old Clare Crawley is attempting to find her lifelong partner. The show continues weekly, with one guy leaving after each “rose ceremony.” In the final rose ceremony, the last two contestants propose to the Bachelorette and she either declines or accepts. Before entering the Bachelorette mansion, Chapman earned a scholarship to play football at Fordham University where he was a four-year starting cornerback. He studied Radio, Tele-

“Probably one of the greatest athletes I’ve ever coach, and a good friend,” Lasbury said. “Compassionate, strongwilled and great sense of humor.” Lasbury laughed remembering when he found out Chapman would be a contestant on “The Bachelorette.” “It’s just so much fun to watch him on T.V.,” Lasbury said. “I thought it was great, I am very excited for him. Coats For Connecticut runs through Nov. 25 Despite the impact of COVID-19 on business, Best Cleaners is kicking off its 12th annual Coats For Connecticut campaign with a new resolve to help an everincreasing number of individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet this year. The locallyowned dry cleaning and tailoring company hopes to collect, clean and deliver 10,000 donated coats and jackets to The Salvation Army for distribution throughout Connecticut. To do so, the general public is urged to go through their closets; gather up coats that are in good condition but no longer worn; and drop them off at any one of Best’s 13 locations by Wednesday, Nov. 25. Outerwear for all ages and in all sizes is needed, especially children’s coats. All donated coats will be cleaned for free and deliv-

ered to a centralized Salvation Army drop site in Meriden where volunteers will sort the coats for distribution to those in need. The Coats For Connecticut program was started by Best Cleaners in 2008 with the primary goal of putting its eco-friendly services to work to help those in need get through the cold winter months. Given the pandemic and its impact on family finances, the need for coats is greatly increased, and the need for clean coats is critical. Confidence in meeting the demand is high due to the overwhelming generosity of the community at large and Best’s campaign partners. In addition to The Salvation Army, sponsors include Eyewitness News WFSB-TV3, Young’s Printing/Fast Signs, and Two Men And A Truck. Since the campaign’s incep-

Local man charged with DUI, manslaughter in vehicle crash By Lauren Sellew Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — A Southington man faces DUI and manslaughter charges after police said he was the driver of a vehicle in a crash that killed a passenger in May. Byran Garcia, 24, of 80 Bristol St., Southington, was charged Thursday, Oct.29, with second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, reckless driving, fail-

ure to drive right, failure to wear a seatbelt in the front seat, and removal of a muffler. Garcia

Xavier Alamo, a passenger in the 1993 Honda Civic Garcia was driving on the night of May 16, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Old Colony Road crash, according to Garcia’s arrest warrant.

Garcia, who was ejected about 49 feet from the scene of the crash, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He declined an interview with police about the crash, the warrant said.

snapped a utility pole. An officer found at least three “nip” bottles of Fireball cinnamon whiskey in the area, the warrant said. Garcia was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, Alamo was wearing a seatbelt.

Police determined Garcia was driving south on Old Colony Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control on a slight curve, the warrant said. The car struck a curb, went across a lawn, struck a wooden post with three mailboxes, then

Garcia’s medical records from the night of the incident showed a presence of cannabinoids and his blood alcohol level was determined by the state police laboratory to be .17, the warrant said. The legal limit is .08.

Garcia was arraigned at the Meriden Superior Court on Thursday. Bond was set at $10,000 and the case was continued to Dec. 16. Garcia is not allowed to drive a motor vehicle and must obey a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. He was also referred for drug and/or alcohol treatment and will be placed on electronic monitoring. lsellew@record-journal.com 203-317-2225 Twitter: @LaurenSellewRJ

PET ADOPTION Hello, my name is Jewel. I may be a senior citizen, but I have a lot of life left in me. I am a calm and super sweet cat. Don’t l look beautiful in my Halloween costume? I was purring so loud at the vet’s office that he couldn’t hear my heartbeat. It takes a special kind of person to adopt a cat that’s so special and wonderful. He said voters were looking for an alternative vision for the state, something that he’s worked to offer. “People are tired of the direction of Connecticut,” Sampson said. Perry was also pleased with the campaign and the number of voters he was able to reach through going door to door and social media.

“It’s going to be close,” he said Tuesday night. “We gave it our all.” Perry didn’t want to speculate on how the race might turn out.

Unofficial totals also showed a 2,300-vote lead for Republican incumbent state Rep. John Fusco over Democratic challenger Dagmara Scalise for the 81st state House seat.

“We’re waiting for final numbers from everyone,” he said.

Fusco, running for his third term in the state House, said he’s focused on help-

ing constituents that call his office. “This election was going to be won or lost on the job I was doing,” he said. “My value is in my constituency (work).” His cousin Angelo Fusco, See Election, A15

Facts to know about Veterans Day By Katie Lange

Veterans Day is a wellknown American holiday, but there are also a few misconceptions about it — like how it’s spelled or whom exactly it celebrates. To clear some of that up, here are the important facts you should know. Veterans Day does not have an apostrophe. A lot of people think it’s “Veteran’s Day” or “Veterans’ Day,” but they’re wrong. The holiday is not a day that “belongs” to one veteran or multiple veterans, which is what an apos-

trophe implies. It’s a day for honoring all veterans — so no apostrophe needed.

alive — although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices.

Veterans Day is not the same as Memorial Day.

It was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I.

A lot of Americans get this confused, and we’ll be honest — it can be a little annoying to all of the living veterans out there. Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country, particularly in battle or from wounds they suffered in battle. Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or

World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, the fighting ended about seven months before that when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. See Facts, A19

She also studied and received her diploma as a Paralegal. Over the years, Nancy worked at Fafnir in New Britain in the late 40s and as a waitress at the Meadowlands Restaurant in New Britain, the Makris Diner on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington and helped manage a drive-in movie-theatre. ...

HERE ARE THIS WEEK’S MALE & FEMALE NOMINEES .

JAKE NAFIS

MEGHAN GEORGESCU

Jake Nafis is rounding back into the form that, a year ago, made him a pivotal piece of Southington’s State Open team as a freshman. Coming off a 17:21 in a second-place finish on his home turf at Camp Sloper against Avon, the sophomore ran a 17:07 at Winding Trails last Wednesday to lead the Blue Knights to a 17-46 win over Farmington. Nafis and the Knights run in their CCC divisional meet next Tuesday in New Britain.

Meghan Georgescu has set a strong pace for Cheshire cross country since her freshman year, when she made the All-SCC Second Team. Now a junior, Georgescu led the Rams in every meet this fall save for the season opener. She capped the regular season with a pair of first-place finishes at Cheshire Park, covering the 2.9-mile layout in 19:26 against Shelton and in 19:49 against Branford. She and the Rams finished 7-2.

MATT PISANI

CAROLINE KRAWEC

Goalkeeper Matt Pisani has been a part of Cheshire soccer for four years. He’s been aboard for 33 regular-season wins and a trip to the 2018 Class LL quarterfinals. He was an All-SCC Second Team selection in 2019. This year, as a senior captain, as the last line of defense, he had the Rams at 4-2-2 going into Wednesday’s showdown with Xavier. Pisani has a goals-against average of 1.12 and three shutouts to his name.

Lyman Hall and Sheehan put a twist on their third virtual meet of the season, going with a “pentathlon” format that featured the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and individual medley, all at 100 yards. Caroline Krawec, Lyman Hall’s All-State junior, won two of those races — the IM in 10:4.34, the breaststroke in 1:12.82 — to lead the 5-2 Trojans to a 44-36 victory. Krawec also placed third in the butterfly in 1:06.23.

ALEX ROCHA

MONTGOMERY RIOS

We don’t know where the Platt boys soccer team will be three years from now, other than that Alex Rocha will likely still be playing for the Panthers and, if his freshman campaign this fall is any indication, still playing very well. A quick, skilled forward, Rocha cracked the starting varsity lineup this season and, in his first game, scored his first varsity goal. He had an assist last week against unbeaten Wethersfield.

Senior Montgomery Rios is a veteran of Wilcox volleyball. She knows how the program ebbs and flows. This year’s team? “We have a good vibe on the court,” Rios said. Yeah, you could say that. The Indians are 10-0. They’ve won 30 sets and lost just three. Cheney Tech was the latest victim. Rios dished nine assists in Friday’s 3-0 victory and set the tone by serving a 12-0 run that turned around an 11-8 deficit in the opening game.

Facts From A16

For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, was largely considered the end of “the war to end all wars” and dubbed Armistice Day. In 1926, Congress officially recognized it as the end of the war, and in 1938, it became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I. But then World War II and the Korean War happened, so on June 1, 1954, at the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress amended the commemoration yet again by changing the word “armistice” to “veterans” so the day would honor American veterans of all wars.

Friday, November 6, 2020

For a while, Veterans Day’s date was changed, too, and it confused everybody.

to recognize the day as they previously had — in November.

Congress signed the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968 to ensure that a few federal holidays — Veterans Day included — would be celebrated on a Monday. Officials hoped it would spur travel and other family activities over a long weekend, which would stimulate the economy.

Within a few years, it became pretty apparent that most U.S. citizens wanted to celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11, since it was a matter of historic and patriotic significance. So on Sept. 20, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed another law (Public Law 94-97), which returned the annual observance to its original date starting in 1978.

For some inexplicable reason, the bill set Veterans Day commemorations for the fourth Monday of October. On Oct. 25, 1971, the first Veterans Day under this new bill was held. We’re not sure why it took three years to implement, but not surprisingly, there was a lot of confusion about the change, and many states were unhappy, choosing to continue

observes it on the Sunday closest to Nov. 11 with parades, services and two minutes of silence in London to honor those who lost their lives in war. This article, dated Nov. 5, 2018, was posted to the U.S. Department of Defense website, defense.gov.

Other countries celebrate it, too, in their own ways. World War I was a multinational effort, so it makes sense that our allies also wanted to celebrate their veterans on Nov. 11. The name of the day and the types of commemorations differ, however. Canada and Australia both
