Pandemic prompts adjusting of Hanukkah celebrations
Local girl elected Kid Governor
By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Ten year-old Reese Naughton can’t wait to promote her ideas for community and connection amidst a pandemic after inauguration as Kid Governor next month.
Hanukkah began at sundown on Thursday and area synagogues made plans to celebrate the holiday safely.
More than 6,000 fifth-graders from around the state chose Reese from among seven finalists, each with their own platforms and ideas for bettering Connecticut.
Fifth-grader Reese Naughton, 10, smiles for the camera while on a break from the school day last Thursday at Zaya A. Oshana Elementary School in Southington. Town Council members and Commissioner of Education Miguel A. Cardona, of Meriden, presented Reese with proclamations recognizing her efforts in becoming the next Connecticut Kid Governor. Restaurants continue to cope with virus By Faith Williams Record-Journal staff
With the restaurant industry impacted hard by the pandemic, businesses have had to generate new ideas to retain and attract customers. Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, celebrates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem after a battle between the Maccabees (Jews) and the Seleucids (GreekSyrians). The reason Hanukkah lasts eight nights is because the Eternal Light, the final act of the rededication of the temple, was able to last eight nights on oil that was only meant to last for one. In the past, Gishrei Shalom Jewish Congregation in Southington has held a Hanukkah party, but due to the pandemic, that is not able to happen. But they will be having a virtual menorah lighting on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. “At the party, we would light the menorah, sing songs,” See Hanukkah, A16

He is aware of the speculation about another ban on indoor dining, but because his Pakistani restaurant is mostly takeout, it wouldn’t change much for him.
said it was important to come up with innovative ways to sell alcohol with takeout meals. Since March, the state has allowed restaurants with a bar to sell alcohol to-go as long as it is accompanying a meal sold by the restaurant.
AmericanSoul Kitchen and Bar, a soul food restaurant in Meriden, opened before the pandemic and was successful.
“We’ve been trying to find ways to get alcohol sales going,” Singletary said. “We sell single drinks and bottles of wine to-go.”
Since the pandemic started, things have not been the same, manager Nikki Singletary said.
Southington bakery, Nonnie’s Pies and Creations, opened almost three months ago and owner Nella Lastrina has seen a decline every month.
“We’ve been able to keep a steady pace of customers, but in terms of what we were doing pre-COVID, it’s definitely a drastic change,” she said.
Her use of social media has helped with generating business. Lastrina also recently added coffee to her menu. She said her most popular items are cupcakes.

Words of Wellness by Dr. Stacey Raya
PILLOW TALK While a “crick in the neck” may not be an official medical diagnosis, it is widely recognized as the stiffness in the muscles surrounding the lower neck and shoulder blades, which makes head-turning difficult. Neck pain and cricks can develop as a result of sleeping with one’s head on an uncomfortable pillow or over an extended arm. As a result, strained muscles can go into spasm, causing stiffness. It may also be that the ligaments surrounding small “facet joints” (two of which are in each pair of vertebrae to allow movement) can become strained and throw the muscles into protective spasm. Whatever the reason, a chiropractor can work to alleviate a stiff neck and identify its cause to prevent recurrences.

Fire damages Butternut Lane home, displacing family A kitchen fire damaged a local home on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 3, causing no injuries but displacing one family. Shoppers support local businesses, education By Faith Williams Record-Journal staff
The snow on Saturday did not stop residents from supporting local businesses and the school system. The Southington Education Foundation partnered with a dozen businesses to raise money for education.

A portion of sales at the businesses on Saturday will go to fund student scholarships and teachers’ projects. One of the stores that participated, Bangle, a dress and accessory shop, had a great turnout despite the snow, according to the owner. To lure shoppers they offered 25 percent off and a free gift. Ten percent of sales will be donated to the foundation.

“We actually did very well,” owner Christine Ramone said. “There was a lot of support through the school system for local shop owners, so it was nice to see that...small businesses need the support right now.” Ramone said she feels it is very important to her to support the community, especially because she has family members in the school system. “And it’s agreed, based on the traffic we’ve seen at stores like Wal-mart’s Black Friday, in-store shopping has declined, likely replaced with home delivery; also evident by the number of delivery vans scurrying around town,” Egan said in an email Friday.
Mennone and Egan both recommended having packages sent to locations where someone is available to receive it, like a workplace or to a neighbor who is home. Egan noted that residents should request a signature for delivery of high priced items or pick them up at a store.

Positive COVID-19 test forces Anthony Jacks to close temporarily owners Cheryl Moran and Barry DePaolo.
Anthony Jacks Wood Fired Grill restaurant temporarily closed its doors this past weekend after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19.
“We can assure you that when we re-open, we will continue to maintain our already high standards of health and safety measures and protocols,” said Moran and DePaolo. “We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this difficult time and look forward to getting back to doing what we have done best for the last 19 years....serving our wonderful customers.”

During the temporary closure, Moran and DePaolo encouraged customers to visit their sister restaurant, Tavern 42, which is located on 42 West Main St., Plantsville.
“To have an employee test positive and the risk of my staff or customers getting sick is an everyday nightmare. It’s like constantly living on the edge, it’s a constant PTSD,” said Moran.

said Rabbi Alana Wasserman. “We’re still going to light the menorah and sing songs. It will just be on Zoom.”
“At the beginning of the Sabbath, we usher in the Sabbath. At the end of the Sabbath, we say goodbye,” Kaplan said. “Traditionally, it’s done over a cup of wine with a candle with some singing.”
There was an adult education program on Sunday at 1 p.m. that discussed how Hanukkah is celebrated around the world. “This year we decided that we’re going to learn about different Jewish cultures because we are learning that the majority of Jewish people that we know are...families from eastern Europe, but there are Sephardic Jews as Raizy Kaplan tests an electric menorah while setting up the front windows of Chabad of well,” Wasserman said. “... Each night of Hanukkah at 6 p.m., Temple Beth David in Cheshire will hold a community candle lighting on Zoom. At 7 p.m., bedtime stories for kids will be read by temple members. Both the candle lighting and the bedtime stories are new events this year. “Everything, just by nature of it all being virtual, we’ve never thought to do before,” said Jodi Harris, the temple’s director of congregational learning and engagement. On Tuesday, Dec. 8, Temple Beth David planned to host “Learning and Latkes,” featuring a demonstration on making latkes and a discussion about Hanukkah. The temple’s religious school will be having virtual Hanukkah festivities on Dec. 13, including crafts, music, a cooking demonstration and games. “We’re trying to make it as much a festival as we do every year for the kids,” Harris said. A teen Hanukkah discussion will take place the afternoon of Dec. 13. On the last night of Hanukkah, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m., there will be an online trivia night featuring Hanukkah questions. On the seventh night, a menorah car parade will take place, where people will decorate their cars. They will be meeting in Orange to begin the parade. “We’re all going to drive to a huge parking lot where we’re going to have a drive-in Chanukah celebration,” Kaplan said. “... We will have holiday packages delivered to everyone that is there. It’ll have a little jelly donut, a menorah if needed and everyone will get to be in their car, but be together with a lot of music and joy.”

Bagel business perseveres through COVID pandemic By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
After hitting a company record of more than 1.3 million bagels sold last year, Fancy Bagels owners thought they were on track to surpass that this year. While the pandemic disrupted those hopes, as well as plans for expansion, owners are optimistic about the future and proud that they didn’t have to shut their doors even temporarily. “You’ve got to stick to stuff, you can’t panic,” said Dominick Gualtieri, a co-owner. Fancy Bagels at 405 Queen St. celebrated 30 years in business in 2020. The company also has a Farmington location. Other than the plain, Gualtieri said their most popular bagel is the “everything bagel.” The restaurant has its own bagel recipe and

She’s also hoping to establish virtual events to raise money for masks and other sanitary equipment for schools that are running low. With her 102-year-old great-grandmother in a nursing home, she wants to create care packages that can encourage lonely seniors shut in by the pandemic. “I just love helping out,” Reese said.

makes them from scratch, using both a boiling and a steaming system that Gualtieri keeps a secret. The technique gives the bagels a crunchy outer crust and a soft inside. Pino and Silvana Belcaro, Italian immigrants, started the Southington Fancy Bagels location in 1990, shortly after buying the Farmington restaurant. Their son, Sal Belcaro, is still coowner of the business. The Belcaros brought the restaurant’s signature technique from New York for a result that has won awards, Gualtieri said. Along with hard work, the popular bagels have also helped draw customers for the past three decades. “There’s a lot of sacrificing that goes into it,” Gualtieri said. “I went a good 20 years working with no vacation, See Bagels, A24
The Kid Governor program, run by the nonprofit Connecticut Democracy Center, allows fifth-graders in participating schools to vote for their candidate of choice and to learn about civic participation. While civics isn’t a portion of the fifth-grade curriculum, Chavez said that taking part in Kid Governor elections introduces children to voting, platforms, speeches and analyzing ideas. This year, candidates for Kid Governor made videos and three-point platforms that they sent to the more than 110 schools that took part. “It’s still such an important aspect of a child’s education.” Chavez said. “We definitely make sure we take time to incorporate that into what we’re doing.” A dozen Oshana students ran in the school’s primary, with Reese winning out. “We had ballot boxes, polling stations,” Chavez

Chips Family Restaurant built a location just north of the planned 110 Grill location in 2018. Between that restaurant and the grill is a gas station owned by another developer.
Modern American cuisine, allergy friendly Kim Wallace, operations director with 110 Grill, said the restaurant chain offers modern American cuisine such as steaks, seafood and pasta dishes. The company also offers gluten-free meals and was named one of the top 10 allergy-friendly restaurants in the country by AllergyEats this summer. Late last month, the company opened its first Connecticut location in Canton in The Shops at Farmington Valley. There are 30 locations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York as well. The restaurant will have seating for more than 200.
Expansion for Target plaza Frederic Leopold, the New York-based owner of Northstar Properties, has been developing the land near the West Street exit off Interstate 84 for more than a decade. His companies own the HomeGoods plaza on West Street as well as the Lowe’s plaza behind the Target. After establishing major retailers, the development company was looking for good tenants for land close to West Street, ac-

Fundraisers at 5 When she was five, Reese was prompted by a “Today” show segment to collect dog toys, blankets and snacks for Kenway’s Cause, a nonprofit that supports animals at Hartford Animal Control. Her mother Allyson Naughton posted about it on Facebook and the effort gathered support from people throughout Connecticut and beyond. Naughton said she couldn’t be more proud that her daughter had won the Kid Governor race. “When I saw how driven she was at the age of five, I knew she would do big things,” Naughton said. “She’s always been a kid who’s been really driven and wants to make people happy.” Josephine Rogala, principal of Oshana, is in her second year at the school. As a fourth-grader, Reese asked
Knowles said plans for the property approved in 2009 included a conceptual building where the grill will be, although those plans were successfully modified Tuesday to accommodate the restaurant. He said Leopold “had been looking for a really good, high quality operator for that parcel.” The restaurant’s application prompted discussion of the traffic flow in the Executive Boulevard area, with some commission members concerned about merging lanes and curves. Assistant town engineer Jim Grappone said the police department had made some improvements through sign and pavement markings. “They feel what’s out there works,” Grappone said. “It’s not the best scenario, accidents are minimal, not zero.” Commission member said concerns over Executive Boulevard traffic didn’t have any bearing on the 110 Grill application.
to meet with her and presented fundraising ideas to benefit no-kill animal shelters. “She and I met quite a bit last year. She pulled together a whole school-wide fundraising effort,” Rogala said. “She’s very passionate about the topics that are important to her.” Running for and winning the Kid Governor election was a natural progression for Reese, Rogala said. With limited access to her grandmother in a nursing home, connection and mental health was a personal topic for the fifth-grader. “Reese is one of those students who has always been mindful of wanting to help others,” Rogala said. “She is very positive, she always has a smile on her face”

so the family had no idea how Reese was doing while the election was underway. Naughton told her daughter winning Kid Governor would be a long shot. Other candidates’ platforms included fighting racism, body shaming, climate change and college readiness. “I didn’t want her to get her hopes up,” Naughton said. “I knew she had some pretty tough competition … These kids hit head-on so many topics that are so important in general but especially during a pandemic.” “It was very stressful (waiting for results), but when I won, I was in total disbelief,” Reese said. “I’d come so far, I was super proud of myself.” Reese turns 11 years old later this month. Fancy Bagels location. That restaurant closed down and was incorporated into Fancy Bagels with some of the menu still available. That extra room made things easier this year, although the Fancy Burgers menu was streamlined. “Hopefully next year we can pick it up, bring back things like the cheese fries,” Dominick Gualtieri said.

Gualtieri had planned to add more vegan items to the menu, such as meat and egg alternatives. He’s still hoping to do so but wants to stick with the basics until business is closer to normal. Gualtieri, a vegan, said the bagels are made without animal products. He doesn’t advertise that but has seen more demand for vegan food lately. “I realized there’s such a market for stuff like that,” he said. Gualtieri said he and Belcaro have been considering a second location for some time. They’re working on a Plantsville location but aren’t sure about an opening date. “It kind of depends on what the governor does” with pandemic restrictions, Gualtieri said.
‘One big family’ Some of Fancy Bagels’ customers have been eating there for almost as long as the restaurant has been in business. Gualtieri knows a few who were boyfriend and girlfriend decades ago. “Now they’re married and their kids are coming in,” he said. “We love everybody. It’s like one big family. A lot of the people who come in, we already know what they’re going to order.” Barbara Coleman-Hekeler, Southington Chamber of Commerce president, said Fancy Bagels and any other business that’s been operating for 30 years has been able to weather three different recessions. “It’s definitely impressive to see that businesses have been able to sustain,” she said.
