“We’ve made tons and tons of changes,” said Laura Loffredo, director of sales and marketing at Powder Ridge in Middlefield.
With most big events cancelled this year due to the pandemic, plans for the Apple Harvest Festival remain hopeful for 2021.
Those changes include expansions to the rental shop and teaching areas to accommodate social distancing procedures. Snowfall Ski resort mountains in the northeast from New York to Maine received over a foot of new powder during the storm last week.
Belleayre Mountain, New York, 21 inches. Berkshire East, Mass., 18 inches. Bromley Mountain, Vermont, over three feet. In Connecticut, Mohawk Mountain, Mount Southington, Powder Ridge, and Ski Sundown all gained over a foot. — Dave Mongillo, Snow Views
Skiing From A1
On the ski lifts, riders will only be grouped with their party. Mount Southington, located at 396 Mount Vernon Road, is employing similar measures for the safety of their riders, according to General Manager Jay Dougherty. Several areas at Mount Southington have been redesigned to allow outdoor seating. Lift tickets can now be pre-purchased via the resort’s website.
Because the ski area will operate at half capacity, the website allows staff to track prepurchased tickets and limit the capacity of individuals coming on a given day. Doughtery encouraged buyers to purchase tickets online. Priority is given to skiers who have purchased season tickets, joined teams, established prepaid groups, or enrolled into multi-week programming, Dougherty said. After that, tickets are made available for online purchase.

An earth-friendly approach to holiday cleanup day clean-up without throwing it all in the trash.
Giving and receiving holiday gifts is a real joy. Unfortunately, after the fact, you may realize all that gifting leaves a lot of trash; cardboard and plastic packaging and miles of gift wrap paper. And how about the tree?
For your tree, sign up for the Southington Land Trust Christmas Tree fundraiser. It’s back this year. SLCT will recycle your tree with pick up at your home’s curb on Jan. 2, 9 and 16, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

This in turn has a direct impact on wildlife and saves energy, water and natural resources by recycling rather than mining, said Pamela Roach, president of the Connecticut Recycler’s Coalition. “Most of us know that we should first reduce, then reuse before recycling,” said Roach. “However, did you know there are actually eight ‘Rs’? They are Refuse, Reduce, Re-Use, Repair, Re-gift, Recover, Recycle—the first and foremost important ‘R’ is ‘Rethink.’ Be mindful of your consumption, your relationship with ‘things’ and your relationship with the earth,” Roach said. If you find yourself with a few minutes to spare after presents have been unwrapped and dinner dishes have been put away, here is some fun Christmas trivia to share with your family: What is the original name for Santa Claus? Sinterklass, Saint Nicolaas or St. Nick Who sang the original Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer? Gene Autry. He made it No. 1 in 1949. Where did the quirky tradition of placing a pickle on the Christmas tree come from? Germany. In the 1880s, glass ornaments sent to the United
States from Germany often featured fruits and vegetables. Tradition holds that those who find the pickle on the tree get an extra present also was a German import. What are four plants associated with Christmas? Holly, mistletoe, poinsettia and ivy. Who wrote “Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer”? Randy Brooks in 1979. The animated movie came out in 2019. What are Christmas crackers? A tradition in England, crackers are cardboard tubes stuffed with sweets and small toys. The crackers have ties at each end. If you received a new doll, hand drill, kitchen tool, or anything that has been packaged in a hard “clamshell” plastic cover, you can put it in the recycling bin. If you have Christmas tree decorations that you no longer want, use in a craft project, gift it to a family member, or throw it in the trash. Or if it’s still useful, consider donating to Goodwill. For questions you might have on other, more ordinary, everyday recycling, check the Recycle Wizard at RecycleCT.com.

Steve’s Restaurant owners to retire, making way for new eatery By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
Steve and Mona Menard are retiring after decades in the restaurant business and plan to lease Steve’s Restaurant in Plantsville to an expanding Waterbury eatery. The couple started in 1978 and have run their South Main Street breakfast and lunch location for 35 years. While they’ll continue to work, they’re looking to step away from the demands of a seven day a week business. “Time to have some fun, I’ve been doing it so long,” Steve Menard said.
The restaurant has a vegan menu and tries to source as much as possible from local producers. Arrington started his own business in 2010 as a personal chef, then moved to a healthy meal preparation service, a food truck, catering and then the Waterbury

The Menards first rented their South Main Street location but only did that for about a year before buying it. They’ve lived above the restaurant since.
Michone Arrington, founder and manager of The Art of Yum, was formerly a chef at ESPN. He’s hoping a location closer to the sports network’s Bristol campus could draw some of his former customers and is hoping patrons of Steve’s Restaurant will give the new eatery a try.
Arrington hopes to open in late January.

“We’re absolutely looking forward to weekends off,” Mona Menard said. Being in business for decades, the couple has seen generations of customers. Grandchildren of some of the first people they’ve served now come into the restaurant.

The Art of Yum serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. One of the restaurant’s breakfast specialties is a panko-encrusted omelet rolled up with toppings inside. “It looks like sushi,” Arrington said. “People go crazy over that.”
