Durham in search of a new finance director By Michael Savino Special to The Times
The Town of Durham is once again looking for a new finance director. First Selectman George Eames said the prior director, Alicia Mancarella, resigned roughly a month ago for personal reasons. The Evidence of Evil attraction is currently happening at Lyman Orchards and will continue every weekend through Nov. 4. Photos courtesy of Lyman Orchards
Get your fright on at Evidence of Evil By Grace McFadden Special to The Times
For thrillseekers looking for an activity this Halloween, the Evidence of Evil Haunted Attraction has returned to Lyman Orchards for weekends in October.
“The market is really tightening up with municipal experience and accounting experience, which are the two things that we’re looking for,” he said. Mancarella was hired in July to replace Beth Moncata, who left for the same position in Middlefield. Eames said Moncata’s departure highlights the difficulty towns face: many are competing for the same small group of applicants.
The attraction opened Sept. 29. It will continue to run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Nov. 4. Evidence of Evil is somewhere between an escape room and a haunted house, says David Belas, one of the attraction’s organizers.
He said municipal finances are different from the accounting process in the private sector. Even more, many towns use a software system that is very different from both the private sector and from state level finances.
“As you go through the show, you have to interact with the different characters, whether it be repeating something they say or doing something they asked you to do,” Belas said. Evidence of Evil distinguishes itself through its interactive elements. Belas says there might be one or two puz-

A response from the Great Pumpkin!
You asked what I do in-between Halloweens. You’ll be happy to know that I travel and do not, as you feared, spend endless hours sitting in a pumpkin patch. I have family abroad and love visiting them. Yes, I can fly on my own, but it’s a long way Unlike some folks (I won’t so I book a flight. You got me laughing when you asked if I would be parachuting in this year. Actually, I sent a Facebook message to the Jolly Elf asking if I could borrow his sleigh for the night. He wrote back that it is in the shop for repairs. I don’t believe him. I think he’s afraid of the competition. So it looks like I will be winging it on my own.

I’m sorry that last year you fell asleep in school the next day. So I think we should make it an early night. Say, sevenish? And I do love the idea of a Barcalounger. I could put my feet up, if I had any. I just like the thought of it. You think I’m magic. Well, I am. And so are you, my son. Everyone is. And ain’t that grand! Thank you for believing in me. It’s what brought me to you. And just for fun-and oh, it will be fun-I think it’s high time I paid Charlie Brown a visit. Let’s make a believer out of him.

I was so happy to hear from you (see Town Times, 10-623). You are such a delight. I’m sorry that for all those years I did not make an appearance in the pumpkin patch. It pains me to think of you standing there for hours in the cold, waiting for me. My bad! But we’re on track now. You can count on me every year.

SEEKING NEW HOMES Nosey — Female, Domestic Short Hair, Brown Tabby, 15 years old. This is a courtesy posting. This cat is not fostered by Cat Tales. Contact the owner directly for more information. Meet Noey, the most affectionate, friendly, and cuddly cat you’ve ever seen, who has never met a human she didn’t like. Despite being around 15 years old, plus the fact she has only three legs, Noey exudes the energy of a much younger cat and lets nothing slow her down. The current caregiver for Noey is taking a teaching opportunity in Rwanda and cannot take Noey with her. Noey needs to be re-home before December 2023. Noey is up-to-date with vaccines and vet care, but not animal-friendly, so she'll do best as an only pet. She does require 2 litter boxes that should be cleaned about every 12 hours as well. Noey will fill your home with love and warmth! Contact Nicole at nicole.irgens@gmail.com to inquire about Noey.
Emily — Female, Domestic Short Hair, Brown Tabby, 3 years old. Emily was rescued from a bad situation. She is very sweet, loves to be petted and loves to be talked to quietly. Once she trusts you she will love to cuddle with you and be by your side. She’s been waiting a long time for a forever home and we don’t know why. She is such a good girl and deserves the best! To adopt Emily, please contact Cat Tales today! No Dogs / No Children. Web: http://www.CatTalesCT.org/cats/Emily; Phone: 860-3449043; Email: info@CatTalesCT.org. Evidence of Evil including ‘The Basement’, ‘The Witch’s Castle’, and ‘Wraiths’. Those interested in facing the frights at Evidence of Evil should know the event is PG-13 in nature. While attendees can exit if they’re too frightened, there are no refunds. That is to say, Evidence of Evil is not for the faint of heart.
“We start as soon as we can, you know as soon as the snow and ice melts,” Belas said.
The attraction began at Lyman Orchards in 2021. Justin Coretto, the operations manager, said the small group running Evidence of Evil wanted to create something that stands out from the crowd.
This is just one of many autumnal offerings that take place at Lyman Orchards, though many of the other activities are less “haunting” in nature. In the fall, Lyman Orchards offers pick your own apples and pumpkins as well as a corn maze.
“We wanted to make an attraction that stands out on its own for being something unique and, I guess, uniquely entertaining in a way that you can’t really get elsewhere,” Coretto said.

Planning for an attraction of this scale – which involves organizing volunteers, actors, parking and ticketing – starts months in advance.
This culminates in the attraction running through Halloween season for fans and new faces alike.

Bring Durham together Editor : My wife and I were leaving Mitchell, SD last summer when she asked if I’d turn around. Our destination became Dakota Wesleyan University and the George McGovern Legacy Museum. McGovern was raised in Mitchell, attended college at Wesleyan, met his wife of 64 years there, became a SD senator, and ran an unsuccessful campaign against Nixon who had to resign two years later. Why did we care? We voted for a president the very first time in that election. Whether the Nov. 7, Durham election will be your first or 40th, take stock that we are fortunate that the times have brought us serious and earnest candidates to vie for First Selectman and Selectman. I ask that you not only vote in this municipal election but throw your support behind Chris Balay and Tom Hennick. Chris, for First Selectman, has a sweeping knowledge of this town and its current and historical challenges through his endless hours devoted to key and substantive volunteer town and fair assignments. Tom, for Selectman, former Durham selectman and RSD13 board member, is one of the most respected advisors on state government policy and open government that we could possibly have. Editor : Why would I, a Democrat, vote for Jim Irish or Bob Yamartino?
Town wrong in this regard: the Board of Ed has listened to Middlefield’s voice concerning taxes through Jim and Bob (and others). Although no one likes high taxes, they have poured over the data with the BOF, giving us reasonable and livable budgets. Also, they are both looking decades ahead in implementing programs to benefit our town with costefficient savings.
I have seen both Jim and Bob spend hours on end within the Town Hall and Community Center. They don’t twiddle their thumbs. Both have lent their keen business acumen with timely, pertinent, and interested advice via their many years of leadership on Boards of Finance, and on the Board of Selectmen.
Both have come from a-political, centrist positions as originally unaffiliated voters. Given the need to affiliate with a party in order to run, one party was quicker to endorse…our Republicans.

Big Y offering cost-free COVID vaccines Big Y Pharmacies are now providing cost-free COVID19 vaccines for adults 18 years and older without insurance or whose insurance requires a copay. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine. CDC is dedicated to protecting access to no-cost COVID-19 vaccines for all. The updated COVID-19 vaccines are covered by insurance. Uninsured children have their
vaccines covered by Vaccines for Children (VFC). There are also 25-30 million adults, however, without health insurance, and additional adults whose insurance will not cover COVID19 vaccination without a copay. CDC’s Bridge Access Program is partnering with select pharmacies to offer no-cost COVID-19 vaccines to adults who are uninsured or underinsured. Big Y Pharmacy is partnering with eTrueNorth, a United States-based healthcare
services company, to offer this program in the community. eTrueNorth partners with pharmacies nationwide to make basic health and wellness services more accessible. Big Y Pharmacy locations in the area may be found by visiting https:// www.bigy.com/Pharmacy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved and authorized an updated COVID-19 vaccine as of Sept. 11, 2023. The vaccine is formulated to provide better protection against the most recently circulating
COVID variants. The mRNA vaccines are manufactured by Moderna US, Inc. and Pfizer Inc. Individuals covered in full by insurance are not eligible for this program.
