WAVING GOODBYE TO THE SCARECROWS

New faces on BOS, same mission statement By Michael Savino Special to The Times

New faces will serve on the Durham Board of Selectman, but Republicans were able to maintain control after the Nov. 7 election. Regardless of the results, both parties said little will change in how the town is run. The town green in Durham may be scarecrow-free now, on Oct. 22 residents and businesses turned out for the Durham Recreation Department’s Scarecrow Building Contest. The annual event was postponed for one week due to rain, but by the time the contest was over, there were no shortage of displays to admire. The scarecrows were taken down by Nov. 10, so those who missed the show will have to wait until next year. Photos courtesy of Durham Recreation, Facebook

Incoming First Selectman Brendan Rae said he wants to focus on filling remaining

job openings and developing the Community Center, things the outgoing selectmen have been doing. And Democrats said they want to help accomplish those goals. “We feel like a lot of the issues that need to be addressed in town are not political,” Democratic Town Committee chairwoman Kristina Talbert-Slagle said, vowing See Durham, A6

Voters support Yamarino, GOP, reject charter revisions by Michael Savino Special to The Times

First Selectman Robert Yamarino was pleased with his election to another term to office during the Nov. 7 election. He was disappointed, though, that voters rejected a number of ballot changes, including making the town clerk and tax collector ap-

pointed positions. “With the level of professionalism required, we thought it was better to have them as appointees,” he said. Yamarino easily won re-election, beating out petitioning candidate Robert Bascom 872-422. He’ll be joined by returning Board of Selectmen members James Irish, See Middlefield, A5

Giving thanks for everything in my life

There are the big things, of course. My family, my friends, my home, my health. No-brainers, all of them. But on my good days, the days when my hamsteron-a- wheel brain decides to take a time-out and just look around at all the miracles in my life, both large and small, here’s some of the things I come up with.

•Netflix. You know how I love Netflix •This column and my awesome editor. I give thanks all

•When I am in the midst of some crisis, whether real or imagined, and someone says just the right thing at the right time, and it just turns everything around for me. •Finally having a good shower head that delivers a most enjoyable shower. I had tortuous years of not being able to get the temperature right, either being scalded or nearly turned into a popsicle •Swimming in the saltwater. For me, it is the definition of bliss. •The special sauce that I make for my veggies. It makes Brussel sprouts seem like a treat.

•Listening to a favorite song while I am driving. Currently it is “Last Christmas” by Wham. •Oh, Christmas, for sure. The lights, the high spirits, Christmas songs and movies, the presents —I love presents. •Kitty Shiloh and kitty Sierra jumping on my bed when I wake up in the morning, to help me greet the day. •When the meteorologists predict a doozy of a storm and it never comes. I would get down on my knees and give thanks if I thought for one minute that I could get back up •Fall’s palette of beautiful colors.

•When there’s a storm and the power stays on. I go into •A call from my boys. It a tailspin whenever the thrills me every time. lights flicker. Really, I resort •A beautiful sky. I’ve become to prayer — “Please, please, fascinated with clouds. please let the power stay on.”

That tally was much closer, being rejected by just four votes. Yamarino said its possible officials could try again on some of those ideas, although he has not talked with the Charter Review Commission or the other selectmen.

Yamarino said term limits will continue to make it hard to find enough volunteers to serve on boards and commissions. “When a person leaves a board or a commission, they’re taking with them years of experience and knowledge, he said. “And the only reason they’re off a board or commission is because they’ve attended those years of experience and

She didn’t want to go against the work of the bipartisan Charter Review Commission but she also had concerns telling residents how to vote. “We felt they were so personal to everyone’s view of how Middlefield should be governed,” she said.

“I’m excited for the way the election turned out, for all the new elected officers to take office in December,” Rae said. He said his first priority is to find a new finance director if the position remains vacant when he takes office next month. The town hired Alicia Mancarella in July to replace Beth Moncata, but she resigned in late August. Rae also wants to continue to develop the Community Center, where residents were
