Board seeking input on ARPA funds

GHOULISHLY DELIGHTFUL

By Michael Savino Special to The Times

The Board of Selectmen plan to seek the public’s opinion on some major purchases at their next meeting. The board will hold a public hearing on three potential purchases relying on American Rescue Plan Act funding, including two generators and an electrical panel.

The weather outside might have been frightful, but inside at Durham Community Center on Sunday, Oct. 29, all was ghoulishly delightful. The Durham Recreation Department held their Trunk-or-Treat event, and though the rain moved everything inside, that didn’t stop any of the fun. Photos courtesy of Durham Recreation, Facebook

The cost of each project will be determined when the town seeks formal proposals, but First Selectman George Eames told the board during See ARPA, A7

The beauty of enjoying a lazy Sunday, every Sunday

I just love Sundays. It’s my favorite day of the week. The face of it has changed considerably since I was a pup, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. My peers and I sometimes reminisce about those days. We all seemed to share the same experience of them. The day always had an easy flow to it. There was a big meal at noon. We called it dinner, supper being the evening meal. I recall a lot of corned beef and cabbage, my stepfather’s favorite. Then, without fail, we hopped in the car for a ride. That’s what we called it – a ride. With no particular destination in mind, which really was the beauty of it. No agenda or itinerary, just going with the flow. Seeing where the day took us. Much to my great delight, it often took us to Dairy Queen, where a large strawberry sundae had my name on it. Or we would end up at the Guilford dock, looking at the

boats. (We were easily entertained.) Or Griswold Airport, a small no-longer-there airport in Madison, to watch the planes. We liked watching things. Often we would end up at someone’s house for a surprise visit. Back then, that was considered an okay thing to do. And always my mother and stepfather would comment on the houses we passed, with either a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down. They considered themselves quite the critics. Like they were writing an article for Better Homes & Gardens. They weren’t. Those days are long gone but the magic still remains. Like then, Sunday is my day to rest (I’m not sure from what; the jury is still out), to relax, to recharge. On Sundays the world stops outside my door. I have not a care in the world. I don’t give a passing thought to bills. I

For me, it’s a day where all is right in the world. I am the overseer of my own magic kingdom. Peace and joy, unicorns and rainbows. It’s all good. There’s no big meal at noon. Certainly no corned beef and cabbage. But always a special treat for my lunch. There is no riding around aimlessly, not with the cost of gas these days. I don’t love driving enough anyway. The day is more along the lines of “Super Soul Sunday,” Oprah’s show, where spiritual leaders are bound to uplift me. If the weather is warm I sit outside and read. There is usually a walk. If it is raining it is a day of Netflix, wrapped up in blankets with a humongous bowl of popcorn in my lap.

I don’t want to go anywhere. I am staying in my castle, hanging out with my beloved kitties. Tomorrow I will enter the world. Now if I could only keep the magic going for the other six days. At least a little of it. I’m going to work on it.

Letters to the Editor For George Eames IV Editor : First Selectman George Eames IV is a capable administrator whose fervent interest focuses on a strategic course in maintaining the quality of life in Durham while preserving its character. The Fire Company Trustees unanimously recommended a new circuit breaker. Eames said he got an estimate of roughly $29,000 for a new unit. Since the town might replace the unit, Eames said the trustees also recommended replacing the emergency generator. Part of the replacement would require a new standby switch connected to the circuit breaker. “So it really makes sense to do both of these at the same time,” he said. The current generator is old, and the fire department is having difficulty finding replacement parts. Eames also said a new generator would run on propane, instead of diesel. The current estimate for a new generator is $83,693, but Eames said he’d talk

“It was early December and we had all the holidays coming up, so there was a time crunch,” Yamartino said. “With the proposed revisions, the appointment period would be extended to 45 days to give time for the process to happen.”

For the revision regarding Board of Selectmen vacancies, Yamartino said that when former First Selectman Edward Bailey died and left an open seat in 2021, the 30 day window to fill the vacancy proved challenging.

Editor : Whether anyone cares to know it or not I am also a by- product of Regional School District 13, class of 1975. Here’s what I learned that remains, to this day, the best thing I have ever read in my life, given to me by a wonderful teacher. It’s all I ever needed to know. ” Wherever a man goes, men will follow him, and peck and paw him with their filthy institutions.” ( Henry David Thoreau)

martino personally went house to house at the homes without power to see if they needed anything Did they need food or medicine? Did they know of the Town’s warming center? Yamartino is a smart, skilled leader, with empathy. He is committed to maintaining the personality of our town, while seeking affordable, incremental improvements for our quality of life. Please vote on November 7th at the Community Center to keep Bob Yamartino as First Selectman.
