Who will be crowned ‘Mr. Coginchaug’?
SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
By Nicole Zappone Town Times
For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Coginchaug Regional High School’s Mr. Coginchaug competition is back. The not-overly-serious pageant, slated for next Friday, features senior boys going after the crown. Contestants will perform a group dance, showcase individual talents, and show off their formal wear – tuxedoes donated by Modern Formals in Middletown. The Lyman Hall/Coginchaug boys swim team compiled 339 points and finished eighth at the Southern Connecticut Conference championships, held March 2 at Southern Connecticut State University’s Hutchinson Natatorium. Fairfield Prep claimed the team title with 1,007 points. Before the meet, the 2022 SCC swimmers and coaches of year were announced and they included Lyman Hall-Coginchaug’s Kendrick Lagamao, pictured. The junior was named Division II Swimmer of the Year. Middlefield put in 90th district on redrawn map Record-Journal report
Two of the biggest changes to come out of the redistricting process in Connecticut involve Republican Rep. Craig Fishbein’s 90th district, which eliminated Cheshire but picked up all of Middlefield from the 82nd District, and part of Wallingford in the 86th. The 82nd is represented by Democrat Michael Quinn. The 86th is House Minority Leader Vincent Candelora’s district.
“The possibility of representing Middlefield is especially heartwarming for me,” Fishbein said. “Until their passing, my maternal grandparents lived there for many years, and my family runs a factory in town. I used to work there during summers from college. Through them, I have been a part of Middlefield for decades. I am extremely excited for the opportunity to represent Middlefield, and I just know that my grandparents are looking down proudly.” See District, A4
Ten senior boys will compete for the title. They are: Mark Laudano, Samuel Whittle, Gage Rovelli, Connor Willett, Leo DiLeone, Francesco Marrota, Colin Murphy, Jack Huscher, Holden Masterson and Cayden Bernard. At the end of the night, the contestant with the highest point total from the judges will be crowned Mr. Coginchaug 2022. Bernard said, so far, this has been a “very memorable and fun experience.” He said, “Even though I know I’m going to be going on stage just to completely embarrass myself, I’m very happy I signed up for it and get to experience it.” Coginchaug DECA is sponsoring Mr. Coginchaug and all proceeds will help send students to the annual DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta. Harold, welcome to the family (I guess) enough to merit a name) left of his own accord.
I have an uninvited guest in my house, and it looks like he is here for the long haul. I am not doing anything to make his stay comfortable – no special soaps or guest towels. But he seems happy to be here. He’s a mouse, and I believe he has been hanging around the premises for some time now. I’d say he has outworn his welcome, but he was never welcome in the first place. I had my first inkling of his arrival when kitty Shiloh
would sit for an inordinate amount of time in front of the cupboard that’s underneath the kitchen sink. He was obviously on guard duty, and I figured it would be just a matter of time before he cut short the intruder’s visit. There has been no cutting short of the aforementioned visit, however. Shiloh, in due time, abandoned his post, and I was naive enough to think that meant that Harold (he has been here long
But then Shiloh would race through the house, in hot pursuit of Harold, I assumed, and I knew he was still here. Not for long though, I figured, now that Shiloh has him in his crosshairs. But Harold, that wily rascal, has managed to escape capture. And he’s getting bold. The other day I opened the closet door in the hall to put a can in the recycling bin, and lo and behold, there was Harold sitting on top of it, as if he had every right to be there and was wondering what I was doing encroaching on his space. Maybe I should knock from now on. One would think that with two cats in the house there
would be no mice. But Dakota, bless her heart, has put her mouse-chasing days behind her. She doesn’t care anymore. She just wants to sleep. I think a mouse could march right up to her, perhaps even perch on her head, and she would just sigh, roll over, and return to Dreamland. She really cannot be considered a back-up in any mouse situation. Oh, what to do, what to do? Perhaps I could put up a sign that says “Beware. Cat on duty.” But my kitties are really not all that much on duty, and I don’t think anyone of the mouse variety would be deterred. I could politely ask Harold to please pack up his belongings and move on, but I do not think he gives a fig for social protocol.
Actually, this situation always gives way to a mixed bag of emotions for me. I hate that something must meet its demise. I want all living things to live a long, healthy life. Just not in my house. I really hate the mouse doots. Maybe I should just accept the situation. When people ask me how many pets I have, I could tell them three – two cats and a mouse. Maybe I should put out the special soaps and the guest towels. Because it doesn’t look like Harold’s going anywhere soon. Well, little fella, welcome to the family. I only ask that you clean up after yourself. (Really, I do hate mouse doots.)

The video of her kata showed her confidence and skills up in front of hundreds of fellow students, parents and teachers. The whispers of amazement throughout the crowd could be heard. ‘Mr. Coginchaug’
From A1
From A1
Fishbein has reached out to the Middlefield Republican Town Committee for introductions, as campaign season begins this spring.
“I am very excited Mr. Coginchaug will be making a return this year. It’s always a fun evening watching the school come together to celebrate and have some fun,” Coginchaug DECA advisor Ryan Donecker said.
The state’s redistricting process involved a bi-partisan committee which had party veto power over the proposed changes. Fishbein won a tight race in 2020 against Cheshire Town Councilor Jim Jenks that ended up in a recount.
DECA members have been working hard to ensure everyone has a great time. “It’s guaranteed to be an entertaining event with an all-star lineup of senior boys,” said Donecker. Mr. Coginchaug is slated to take place Friday, March 18, 7 p.m., at the Julian B. Thayer Auditorium. Tickets are $5 and will be sold in advance of the show. For more information, email CoginchaugDECA@rsd13.org.

Black belt From A3
Students, especially younger ones, come and go. Some stay for a few weeks, some for a few months. But most tend to lose interest when the magic is gone or the hours and work get hard. As all instructors know, it is sad, but completely understandable. The students who have the foresight and will to get past that, and truly see what martial arts can offer, are the ones that persevere and last. And Kayla did. It was a bittersweet day when she was promoted from the kids class to the adults/advanced class. She would be moving on with a different set of instructors in a different class. But we knew she would excel. Now, she visits to help instruct the same classes she started in years before. Soon before COVID hit, local Girls Scouts asked Middlefield Karate to hold a self defense seminar for moms and daughters. Kayla, along with another young student, assisted senior instructors in running the class. Kayla and her peer taught over 30 young girls the fundamentals of self defense. As taught by our Sensei, as a rule, Middlefield Karate does not promote children to black belt. A black belt must be able to sufficiently defend
themselves (or another) from an average adult and understand when self defense should and, more importantly, should not be used. An adult student is looking at five or more years to receive a black belt in our school. In my 30-plus years with Middlefield Karate, only once do I remember a student younger than 16 receiving a black belt. And he was very special. Kayla is also such a student. And if not for COVID, she would have received her black belt in record time and age for our school.
He started Middlefield Karate over 50 years ago, and while the school has relocated several times, it has always maintained its core philosophy: To teach students the true essence of Shorin Ryu and instill honor, respect and integrity. When Sensei retired over 10 years ago, he entrusted Middlefield Karate to his head students, who were determined to maintain his ethics and way of teaching. As expected, at her black belt promotion, Kayla was beyond impressive, and dis-
played her years of experience with confidence and expertise. For hours, she flawlessly and diligently answered all questions, demonstrated her practiced skills in self defense and knowledge of Okinawan Shobayashi Shorin Ryu Karate history. She discussed philosophy and presented practical applications in the martial arts.
With each passing minute she gave as much as she got. When knocked down, she got back up. When she failed to block a strike, she made sure her opponent paid for it. And these were not point-fighting matches with breaks. They were grueling, drawn-out fights that at times went to the ground and continued until one opponent submitted.
In the final stage of the test, Kayla would face three black belt instructors in sparring, one after another, and would be expected to properly defend herself.
As the fights went on, Kayla learned from her mistakes and fought through exhaustion, pain and mental fatigue. See Black belt, A7
Never once, over all the years at Middlefield Karate, has Kayla asked or inquired about being promoted. Each time she received a belt promotion, she was well overdue. And although she deserved her black belt well over a year ago, her patience and focus never faltered. On Oct.11, 2021, at 7 p.m., Kayla’s hours-long black belt promotion began. It was an invite-only event, and an emotional gathering. Leading the class were Sensei Bongiorno, originally from Middlefield and currently residing in Florida; and a senior student of Sensei Inferrara. Sensei Bongiorno came up through the ranks with some of the best practitioners in and outside of Connecticut.

Liberty Bank Employee Receives Special Recognition from CT NAACP Liberty Bank | Black History Month
The CT NAACP recently released their list of the “100 Most Influential Blacks in Connecticut.” Among the honorees is Liberty Bank’s Glenn Davis, First VP of Community Development and CRA Officer. In this role, Davis is responsible for ensuring that Liberty Bank is in compliance with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), legislation which was designed to encourage financial institutions to meet the credit needs of their neighborhoods, including low- and moderate-income areas. Davis admitted to feeling humbled by the recognition, but excited by the fact that his work is being honored. “My body of work speaks for itself,” he says, explaining that while he never expected to receive accolades for it, this acknowledgement of his achievements gives him even more drive for the future. However, one conversation with Davis proves that drive is not something he lacks. He talks passionately about his job and says he finds purpose in the work since every day gives him the chance to make a difference. “When you help to actualize someone’s dreams, who really couldn’t see how it could happen... that is just the most rewarding experience that you can have.” Originally from Philadelphia, Davis has
to go to work for those he serves. Davis says that Liberty Bank’s mantra, “Be Community Kind,” is the very essence of his job; being kind in every aspect of the community.
Glenn Davis, Vice President, Community Development Officer at Liberty Bank been involved in economic and community development since the beginning of his career. In his nine years at Liberty Bank, Davis has overseen financial literacy programs and the Liberty Bank Academy for Small Businesses. He was also very proud of Liberty Bank’s recent rating of “Outstanding” from the FDIC and the CT Department of Banking during their triennial CRA performance review. Davis’s drive and passion for his work also comes from feeling that Liberty Bank’s values and principles closely align with his own. He says the job was not as involved when he first started but they have invested in him and allowed him
While Davis works for everyone in lowand moderate-income communities, Blacks and other minorities tend to be overrepresented in these neighborhoods. And though the poverty level is dropping for Black Americans, helping even one more person up can have a ripple effect. He says, “A rising tide lifts all boats and that’s true in the community. When you help to create homeownership for one person it can literally transform the entire neighborhood.” Davis hopes that this acknowledgement from the CT NAACP allows more people to learn about who he is and the work that he does. When he is not making a positive impact in his community, Davis enjoys traveling with his wife, reading and being active in his local church. Despite the recognition from the NAACP, he remains a humble man trying to do good work. “I am passionate about the community and about making life better for others... I do what I do not because of the expectations or interest of public accolades but because it’s the right thing to do.”
We’re all in this together. Liberty Bank proudly supports the people and organizations that make our community a great place to live and work. Letters to the Editor Apply today Editor : It’s that time of year again; time to apply for a Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) grant. Not only is the application process simple and straightforward, it is so satisfying to be awarded a grant that improves our community. Last year, the Levi E. Coe Library was awarded two grants — Conscious Kids reading kits and stamping kits. The Conscious Kids kits are nine different reading tools that introduce pre-K and elementary school children to various topics, including Belonging, Celebrating Children of Color, Immigration and Race. These kits aim to help parents and caregivers widen their children’s worldview in an age-appropriate manner.
The stamping kits encourage creativity by including everything one would need to create greeting cards. Each kit centers on different themes and holidays, such as Birthday/Friendship, Get Well/Sympathy and Halloween and Thanksgiving, to name a few. They are also great for scrapbooking! So now is the time to start brainstorming ideas that you think would help encourage lifelong learning in the communities of Durham and Middlefield. Grant applications for the 2022 grant cycle will be accepted through May 1. Apply today for a CVEF grant at coginchaugvef.org. Jess Lobner, MLS Levi E. Coe Library Association
