Lyman Orchards to celebrate Entrepreneurs gather for EDC workshop Pi Day, local non-profits By Everett Bishop Town Times
This year, Pi Day in Middlefield just got a little bit sweeter. Dubbed Pi Day after the eponymous mathematical symbol whose first three digits are 3.14, Lyman Orchards is celebrating this Saturday by opening the Apple Barrel and serving up sweet, delicious pie specials and samples. “What’s not to love about Pi Day? We get to bring awareness to the mathematical constant of 3.14195 by serving our award-winning, handmade fruit pies. Everyone loves pie, and it’s a fun – and delicious –way to celebrate Pi Day with pie,” said John Lyman, executive vice president. But the celebration doesn’t end with pie. In fact, community organizations are joining Lyman Orchards throughout the weekend in order to partake in the festivities. Lyman Orchards’ Pi Day festivites will feature a story time and a craft with the Levi E. Coe Library, a

Coe and Durham Public libraries, the Middlefield Lions Club, the Durham Middlefield Exchange Club, Go Far, CT Forest & Park Association, Willy’s Friends, Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation, DMYFS and the Middlefield Fire Department.

Thank You!
Dear Old Man Winter, I would like to take a moment to express my undying gratitude to you. You have treaded softly this year, and we all love you for it. I especially love you for it. You must know about my foot situation. All boots and shoes torment my tootsies so, except for one pair of shoes that is the next best thing to being barefoot. But they are pretty much a thin cloth draped over a rubber sole, so I cannot in any way claim that my feet are happy when there is snow on the ground. I fear frostbite, and must count my toes on a regular basis to make sure that they are all there.
seen fit to keep the ground bare for two months now, and I would send you roses if I knew your address. And you know how much I hate shoveling. You have heard me grumble and complain for many a year now. I know it is good exercise, but I don’t care. I hate it. I’m not that fond of de-icing and desnowing my car, either. That, too, makes me grumble and complain. And don’t get me started on driving when the roads are covered in snow and ice. (I know, you didn’t mean to.) I creep along at about three miles an hour, holding my breath and praying, with my hands on the steering wheel in a death grip. Thank you so much for sparing me that
But my dear friend, you have

When I remark to people about how great the winter has been, I am usually greeted with warnings about March. “Oh, we’ll get hit big time in March.” Well, we do not know that. You may still be in a good mood. I tell them that even if that happens, we are on the homestretch.

Presidential Primaries are April 28
Letters to the Editor Celebrate responsibly Editor : St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with head-totoe green and an ice-cold beer in hand. But before you step out in search of fourleaf clovers, remember that you can’t rely on the luck of the Irish to get home safely. If your plans involve stopping by a pub or two, make sure to be a responsible friend – hydrate between drinks and plan ahead for safe rides to and from the festivities. Whether you designate a driver, use a rideshare service, or take public transportation, make safety your number one priority.
But we can’t do it alone. This St. Patrick’s Day leave the mischief to the leprechauns. Binge drinking and drunk driving are 100 percent preventable, and we invite you to join us in prioritizing safety and remembering to enjoy responsibly and Drink Wiser.
The Presidential Primaries in Connecticut will be held Tuesday, April 28. Only Democrats are eligible to vote in the Democratic primary and only Republicans are eligible to vote in the Republican primary.

Lawmakers want tougher rules on Sandy Hook fund Associated Press
HARTFORD — Connecticut lawmakers were urged Tuesday to support legislation that would prevent the mixing of money intended help first responders, educators and staff emotionally impacted by the Sandy Hook
shooting with any other funds. The bill comes after a state audit last year found tens of thousands of dollars in philanthropic contributions went missing from a labor organization charity overseeing the fund and were
mixed with other money. Various investigations are underway, and the Connecticut AFL-CIO, which is affiliated with the United Labor Agency charity, has said the missing funds were replenished. But lawmakers said more needs to be done
to ensure the money for workers still in need of help is properly spent. The Sandy Hook Workers Assistance Program was created by the General Assembly in the aftermath of the mass school shooting to help replenish lost wages for
union and non-union workers as they dealt emotionally with the tragedy that left 26 dead, including 20 children. The ULA eventually became responsible for managing and disbursing the remaining funds.

Janet Morganti, chair of the Durham EDC and a business owner, said the event was a success and that several audience members planned on contacting Jackson for additional assistance. Jackson spent the evening discussing the various parts of a business plan, the different ways to structure a business and how to protect a business and any intellectual property. “The most important piece of advice I can offer is to take a look at your idea through the eyes of the customer. Is there a problem to be solved?” Jackson said. ebishop@record-journal.com 203-317-2444
