Talk of the Towns returns

MARCHING ON

The Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation is, once again, hosting Talk of the Towns, a quartet of lively 10minute talks. The free event will take place Saturday, April 2 at the Durham Firehouse. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., the event starts at 7. After almost a three-year hiatus, CVEF is excited to welcome back this popular series, and invites the community to come, listen, learn, visit and enjoy. Snacks and sweets will be served. There will be a cash bar.

The speakers For the first time since the start of the pandemic, Durham's Memorial Day Parade will return Monday, May 30. Veterans are strongly encouraged to participate. Immediately following the parade, a ceremony honoring our nation’s military will take place on the town green. Organizations wishing to participate in the parade should contact Bob Francis at 610-295-3904 or rfranwp80@yahoo.com. Hey, Harold, we really need to have a talk

that fact and keep going.

The saga continues. I am referring to my resident mouse, Harold, who obviously has no intention of going anywhere. He apparently thinks he is one of the family now. Which is a bit odd, since we don’t look anything alike. He has made himself quite comfy in my hall closet, and seems especially fond of my recycling bin. On two occasions he has scared the living daylights out of me.

I think he brought his family members (his real family) with him. The other day I opened the drawer where I

The glove compartment in my car has been hit hard, too. The paper towels I had in there are now confetti. You know the old excuse “The dog ate my homework?” I sincerely hope that things do not get to the point where I must, if asked by a police officer to show him my paperwork, say “A mouse ate my registration.” Maybe all this is the work of the same varmint. Maybe Harold sneaks out at night, when we are all sleeping, and makes his rounds — the drawer, the glove compartment. Although I think if he gets as far as the glove compartment, it means he definitely knows a way out and I think he should take advantage of

I have given up the hope that kitty Shiloh will take care of the matter. Oh, he will sit outside the closet door, looking as if he is poised for action. I open the door so that – well, you know. (Bear in mind, if you would, that I do not enjoy the thought of Harold’s untimely demise, but he is not getting the hint. And he is a horrible guest.)

Once when I opened the closet door to put a can in the bin and saw him just sitting on the lid, and another time when he was actually in the bin. He was probably having a rollicking good time licking the cans. Which would make me look like a top-notch recycler who rinsed her cans thoroughly. (I don’t.) I’ve taken to knocking before I go in.

keep instructions for things, only to find that everything had been rather heartily chewed upon. I guess this critter thinks I can figure things out for myself and am in no need of instructions. He would be wrong.

The nights are still cold so maybe he finds my recycling bin a wonderful respite from them. But soon we will be basking in warm weather and my fervent hope is that he will think it a delightful idea to sleep under the stars, like nature intended.

Lloyd is an organic farmer. His favorite sources for seed are Baker Creek and Comstock-Ferre. In addition to being a microfarmer (farming in small areas), Lloyd works with hydroponics at his home. He then transfers over to soil planting once the season changes. Last year was not the best for his outdoor garden plots. “Too much rain and not enough sun and heat,” said Lloyd. He foresees a

better weather pattern for this year’s growing season. Also, this year Lloyd wants to do “something different.” He has grown Moroccan watermelons, which are bigger than what is found in the U.S. He intends to raise the biggest watermelon and enter it into the Durham Fair.
