“What I try to tell young people is that if you come together with a mission, and it’s grounded with love and a sense of community, you can make the impossible possible.”
After its 2020 pandemiccaused hiatus, the Durham Fair will return in 2021. The 101st edition of the fair will be held Sept. 23 to 26. Durham Agricultural Fair Association president Dan Miramant announced the news in a video released on Monday. “We are excited about this decision,” he said. “We promise, in the great traditions of the Durham Fair, to offer your family and friends a good, clean, wholesome, friendly experience. So come on out and join us at our 2021 fair.” In the flashy video announcement, Durham Fair volunteers talked about the live music, art exhibits, food vendors, rides and livestock attendees can look forward to. There will be new attractions as well, like an international food festival with entertainment. One thing the fair won’t offer this year are concerts on the main stage. Organizers said main stage performances will return in 2022. In years past, the fair has brought in big names like See Fair, A19

Two state titles for Coginchaug In a feat rarely seen in high school athletics, this past weekend Coginchaug captured state championships in both baseball and softball. In the title tilts, the CRHS baseball team bested St. Paul 8-0, while the Lady Blue Devils handled Somers 14-2. See photos of the champs on Page 3.
Politician and civil rights leader John Lewis never met Steven Fitzgerald, so he was not referring to “Mr. Fitz” when he uttered this statement. But he could have been. Residents of Durham and Middlefield lie somewhere on the six degrees of separation model in delightful connection with this Strong Middle School educator. Either you have worked with him, or watched him lead a parade down Main Street, Durham, or perhaps attended a concert. If you have a child in the district, then you may have heard of his amazing leadership as a band teacher. And then there is the ultimate: you have been a student in his class, and watched him teach with a mix of ingenuity, humor and patience so genuine that you felt as though you belonged –

not because of your musical talent – but because you were in his classroom. It’s not a surprise, then, that Mr. Fitz caught the attention of the Coginchaug Valley Educational Foundation when he, with students, presented an idea that was designed with community in mind.
The result: a project which will bring residents of Durham and Middlefield together each month in an open-mic setting. While Fitzgerald brought the original idea to eighth graders at Strong, he made sure they were part of the process. Three “amazing” students were inspired by the idea and helped to get the grant written. Annika Liss came up with the title

In the craziest school year ever, and in a dedication to creating a project “led by student voice,” Mr. Fitz and these students met every two weeks and processed paperwork with consideration of budgetary needs, objectives and logistics. Students made phone calls to find locations for the open mics and researched PA systems. The first open mic will be in September, and locations will be announced at a later date.

So I got brave (for me) and grabbed the auburn. But not without some trepidation. I asked several employees for their opinion regarding this bold step. Nobody had a clue. I almost backed out when I went to pay,
But then I started to hear whisperings of a store in Middletown that offers organic produce for much lower prices. Okay, you’ve got my attention. But the part of me (which is rather sizeable) that does not fancy stepping out of my comfort zone, balked, just a little bit.
auburn henna unleashed the wild woman in me, but today I am going to that store. And I am actually excited! There’s no holding me back now!
So I don’t think I am quite ready to bungee-jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, but if I was, you would see a woman who has a certain clown-like look, what with the red/auburn hair, carefully holding onto that quarter that will unlock that shopping cart.
If you need a tub or shower replaced,

Now I know it is not exactly bungee-jumping off the Golden Gate bridge, but for me it kinda is. I am not brave by nature, so this is a big step for me. When I was in my health food store recently, I saw that they were out of my usual color of henna (light brown). They had dark brown, but that color tends to get people wondering if my broom is doubleparked, if you catch my drift.
there by way of back roads? I am a “back roads” girl, as anything more than four cars on the road feels like heavy traffic to me. What if they don’t have my staples, like Coconut Bliss vegan ice cream? Oh Lord, this is going to be a whole new routine. I must give it some careful thought. I don’t know, maybe buying the

thinking that I could just scoot back and get the dark brown, even though it makes me bear a striking resemblance to Elvira. I had visions of looking like Lucille Ball or Fisbo the Clown or a big carrot. But a little voice told me that this is, all things considered, a very minor life decision, and I really must press on. It was a heartthumping moment. My other brave venture involves – get ready for it! – switching grocery stores. I know, right?! Truth be told, it has taken me a while to work up to this one. I am nothing if not a creature of habit. And that does not always work to my advantage. The store I use now has exorbitant prices for the organic food that is my fare, and every week I am dismayed by how much of my paycheck that filled-up cart devours.

You may recall (I’m sure you do!) my column about the book I’m reading that stresses the importance, for the sake of your brain’s health, of having variety in your life. And you may also recall that the only thing I could come up with, variety-wise, was to switch from eating with my right hand to eating with my left hand. This, I am sure, impressed no one, least of all my brain.

About 65% of eligible people in Southington and Middlefield, a town in the health district, had received the vaccine as of early June. About half of the eligible population in Plainville had as well. Early on the in the vaccination campaign, the hurdle was the number of doses being produced and transported to vaccination sites. There are now plenty of doses, according to Keith Grant, senior system director for infection prevention with Hartford HealthCare. Demand for those doses has dropped, though. “It’s decreased exponentially,” he said. Lockwood said he’s seen a similar decline in vaccinations. He said most who were eager for a vaccine have received it by now. Those who have waited should continue to seek out trusted information on the vaccine, Lockwood said.

Large vaccine sites run by Hartford HealthCare, such as MidState Medical Center in Meriden or the Bradley hospital campus in Southington, will remain open for now, but Grant said planning has begun for closing those sites and shifting vaccination to doctor’s offices. He expects more people will be comfortable taking a vaccine recommendation from their doctor.

As clinical psychologists we understand that throughout life there are times when we, or those we love, may struggle with family or peer relationships, jobs, school, health, stress, or life transitions. Sometimes these challenges are manageable, but at other times they can be overwhelming and one can feel helpless and alone. We understand and respect how difficult it can be to realize you need help to manage these problems. Our goal is to offer a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment where you will work closely and collaboratively with your psychologist to better understand what is getting in the way of reaching your goals. We believe that we can help you access your strengths and resources to make your life and relationships better. We offer a wide range of services to children, adolescents and adults including, individual, couples and family therapy. We also provide consultation services to schools and organizations as well as assessment services. Please feel free to give us a call or explore our website for more information. Both Debra and Stacia are life-long Connecticut residence and are so pleased to be a part of the Durham community. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month recommended “increasing the proportion of vaccines allocated to primary care providers medical offices to promote health equity and address disparities in adult COVID-19 vaccination.” The new guidelines recommend that at least 60% of doses distributed to medical offices be allocated to those in the most socially vulnerable communities in each jurisdiction. Having vaccines given at a doctor’s office like the flu shot could help normalize the process, Grant said. There are also societal reasons to get the shot as some reopening liberties are contingent on vaccination. “It changes the opportunity for us to socialize as normal people,” he said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

‘RING OF FIRE’ ECLIPSE
From A11
People gather to view and take photographs of the “Ring of Fire” partial solar eclipse at Lyman Orchards off Powder Hill Road in Middlefield Thursday morning, June 10.
— Expand Connecticut’s law that allows judges to order someone’s guns seized upon evidence and probable cause they are a danger to themselves or others. Current law allows only prosecutors and police to ask a judge to issue a warrant to temporarily seize someone’s guns. The bill would allow others, including relatives and medical professionals, to request a police investigation into whether someone’s guns should be seized. After a gun seizure, the owner is entitled to a hearing within 14 days to determine if the seizure order should continue. It also eliminates the oneyear cap on keeping someone’s guns. — Expand the definition of domestic violence to include “coercive control” and allow victims of such control to be eligible for civil restraining orders.
Joby Rogers, of Meriden, lines up a shot of the partial solar eclipse. Rogers is a Michael Jackson tribute artist known for his “Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience” performances all over the world.

— Require prisons and juvenile detention centers to provide free phone and other communication services including video and emails. Advocates said Connecticut has been charging some of the highest communication rates in the country for inmates and their families, up to $5 for 15 minutes. — Prohibit police officers from using “no-knock” warrants and expand the reasons that an officer’s state certification may be canceled or revoked. COVID-19 VACCINE
ASK THE EXPERT
“If I’ve waited to get the vaccine, will there still be chances to get it in the future? How can I get it in the upcoming months?”
where people normally receive their healthcare services such as urgent care clinics, doctor offices and pharmacies.
This will be especially true for children as many parents are more comfortable with the trusted pediatrician providing a vaccination rather than a public clinic. The State of Connecticut has been attempting to register more pediatricians as vaccine providers to meet this demand.
“¿Si he esperado para obtener la vacuna, tendré oportunidades de obtenerla en el futuro? ¿Como la puedo obtener en los próximos meses?”
En las últimas seis semanas, hemos visto un cambio dramático de lo difícil que ha sido obtener la vacuna de COVID-19 a tener fácil There are plenty of acceso a ella tanto en vaccines available in pequeñas como en mega the United States and clínicas. As these mega sites start to close, a question I’m asked is will the vaccine still be available in the future. This question usually comes from someone who is hesitant about receiving at this time and either wants to wait to study the vaccine more, wants to see if the vaccine has side effects on other people or see the effectiveness of the vaccine.

She would prefer a quiet home with someone who will give her as much time as she needs to adjust. 5-yearold Mandy came to Cat Tales because her owner passed away. She is very confused as to why she is in a shelter and would love nothing more than to be in a quiet home with you where she can be petted and get affection. Mandy needs a quiet home with someone who will give her time to adjust. She has been through a lot. For more information, visit CatTalesCT.org, call 860-3449043 or email info@CatTalesCT.org.
