Hogan’s Alley brings paintball fields to Powder Ridge
By Ciara Hooks Record-Journal staff
MIDDLEFIELD Hogan’s Alley in Meriden has moved its paintball fields to Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort, with a grand opening scheduled for July.
The store and service center, meanwhile, continue to operate at 998 N. Colony Road in Meriden.
“We’re super excited to be partnering with Powder Ridge on this project,” said Nick Morrione, co-owner of Hogan’s Alley. “They’re doing a lot of great stuff here for the community. They bring in a wide range of people with all the activities that they have and we’re excited to expose paintball to all those people.”
Unfortunately, Hogan’s Alley had to make the very tough decision to close its paintball fields in Meriden about a year ago.
“We were unable to come to an agreement with the property owners,” said Allison Morrione, chief operating officer of Hogan’s Alley. “But what we found was that Connecticut went dark for paintball and there was really nobody else offering the same kind of services we were.”
Powder Ridge, located at 99 Powder Hill Road in Middlefield, reached out to Hogan’s Alley in January about a paintball venture. “We’ve had paintball on our radar ever since our original business plan in 2012 when we

knew we had to expand the offerings at Powder Ridge to be much more than a winter resort,” said Sean Hayes, president & CEO, Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort.
“The key to us was finding a partner, and Hogan’s Alley was the perfect partner,” Hayes added. “They were a local business, one of the preeminent leaders in the industry and they lost their field course. So the synergies were perfect.”
Eagle Scout projects focus on healthy food access

BSA Troop 33 is thrilled to congratulate two new Eagle Scouts, Patrick Kolasinski of Meriden and Logan Watts of Middlefield. Both earned their rank on June 12. The Scouts completed their service projects in support of healthy food access to the community.
Patrick’s project included implementing the SWAP program at the Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown. The project entailed coding the entire food warehouse based on a nutrition system, along with redesigning and assembling shelving storage for existing and incoming donations. There was also a training component to en-
sure ongoing support in maintaining the newly-implemented program.
Logan’s project focused on a new “seed exchange” opportunity for the Middlefield Giving Garden located at the Community Center. The project included building a cabinet to organize and store
MVFC was one of only 89 fire departments nationwide to receive funds for vehicle acquisition through the 2021 FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant program. Eighteen-thousand applications were filed.
The FEMA grant covered the entire purchase price of the MVFC brush truck, but for roughly $10,700.
“During 2021, prices went up due to COVID, and the amount went up a bit more than we had expected,” Fire Chief Peter Tyc said.

Nothing like a summer concert
The other day I drove by a sign perched on the Durham green announcing a concert to be held shortly at Allyn Brook Park.
I was immediately transported back to a different time one that was oh, so good the evenings spent at those concerts, with my boys in their growing-up years. For us, it was the best part of the summer.
My boys rode their bikes around the park while I walked our little dog, Mindy. The music was always awesome. I especially loved the reggae. I was always tempted to kick up my heels. I’m not sure how far I could have kicked them, but I was tempted. The music, reggae or otherwise, lifted me up and made me, well, really happy. Life always feels so good when the music just wraps itself around you. And the louder the better, I say. It really gets you into it. It’s funny how music, more than anything I think, can transport us, in an instant, to another place and time. If I was to hear the music that my boys grew up with, I would miss those times, and them, terribly. (I don’t think music by Metallica is in vogue anymore.)
The young folks that I work with at the kennel bring in their own music to listen to while we are cleaning, and there are always some songs that shoot me back into my past. And always a good part
of my past. Songs that remind me of the magic of summer. Of that special someone who made my heart swoon and my eyes light up. Of my college days, when life was just a hoot, in every sense of the word, and the road ahead seemed endless and enticing and just a bit mysterious. Songs that my boys and I would listen to in the car and belt out at the top of our lungs.
For me, the concerts at Allyn Brook Park mean summer is here. Forget June 21. I go by the concerts.
And the reggae that is sometimes offered up at these concerts? Well, they transport me, not to the past, but to an alternate reality. One where I am an island girl, barefoot, of course, perhaps wrapped in a sarong, and never walking but always swaying and dancing. Reggae gets into my soul like nothing else.
So here come the concerts. Let the magic begin.

At the gathering, cornhole games were presented to the seniors by high school students in Tina Hurlburt’s Technology and Innovation class. The students designed and constructed the games, which the seniors put to good use. In the game of cornhole, players toss fabric bean bags at a raised, angled board with a holes in it. $5 million allocated for BHcare project
Press Release
HARTFORD Last week, House Minority Leader Vincent Candelora and Sen. Christine Cohen led praise from state lawmakers applauding an expected $5 million allocation from the State Bond Commission to help BHcare, Inc. centralize many of its services for adults and children under one roof at a new facility in North Branford.
Headquartered in North Haven, for more than 40 years, BHcare has been designated by the state’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services as the local mental health authority for six shoreline towns Branford, North Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Madison and North Haven.
BHcare is also designated by DHMAS as a Regional Behavioral Health Action Organization for 36 municipalities. Additionally, it’s the domestic violence services provider for 19 cities and towns in the greater New
Haven area. BHcare also provides services in the lower Naugatuck valley.
The $5 million allocation included on the agenda for the June 30 Bond Commission meeting will go toward construction of a 48,000 square foot build along Route 139 in North Branford a project that will allow BHcare to centralize, and even grow, services that are now spread across several locations.
BHcare will occupy roughly half of the space in the new building, and it’s expected that the remaining square footage will be rented to entities that complement BHcare’s services. The entire project is expected to cost $8 million, with BHcare and a private developer investing $3 million combined.
“This is great news for BHcare, which offers a spectrum of critical services that produce positive outcomes for both adults and children, and I’m appreciative of the investment Gov. Lamont and members of the Bond Com-
Food bank
mission are making in this shovel-ready project,” said Candelora, whose 86th District includes North Branford as well as parts of Durham, Guilford and East Haven.
Cohen represents the 12th District, which includes the communities of Branford, Durham, East Haven, Guilford, Killingworth, Madison, Middlefield, North Branford and Rockfall.
“BHcare has been providing vital services to clients throughout the 12th senate district for many years,” said Cohen. “Ensuring that they have the ability to deliver wrap-around care in the areas of domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health will foster healthier families and communities.”
Candelora and Cohen credited other shoreline-area legislators for their support of the effort, including state Sen. Paul Cicarella, and state representatives Dave Yaccarino, Joe Zullo, Moira Rader, Robin Comey and JohnMichael Parker.
The Middlefield Food Bank is in need of the following: peanut butter, jelly, jam, sandwich/freezer bags, coffee, tea, crackers, snacks, laundry detergent, dish soap, cleaning supplies, toothpaste, tooth brushes, pasta, pasta sauce, tuna, and grocery store gift cards.

Hayes said the venture leverages all the things that Powder Ridge already has going on. “With the rental department and the retail store to add, this wasn’t a significant overhead burden and again it’s leveraging the mountain and the resources for the community,” he added.
They were able to start the buildout early in April due to the good weather.
“We’re going to have four playing fields, a shooting gallery and a Greg Hastings Time Trial Challenge Course,” Hayes said.
According to Nick Morrione many parks have a two-tier system, but they’re the first with a three-tier system: non-contact, recreational and competitive tournament play.
Recreational paintball is what most people in the industry call low impact, according to Allison Morrione. “There are some fields that put a chest protector on somebody and call it low impact whereas ours are very specific on our marker that rather shoots a specific type of paintball so that it has less impact felt,” she explained.
Guests can also shoot at mechanical targets that pop out from various obstacles.
“The key for us on the Powder Ridge side was to expand the paintball offering not only to be tournamentstyle, but to really embrace and expand the low impact paintball offerings for field trips, school programs, YMCA camps ...” Hayes said. “And the no impact expands the market even beyond that. We do a lot of corporate business team building exercises so the shooting gallery and the Greg Hastings Challenge Course really opens it up for team building, etc.”
The grand opening for the new Paintball at the Ridge will be the weekend of July 8.
“Our plan is to expand the fields and the capacity; our
desire is to be the largest paintball facility in the Northeast with over 10 playing fields,” Hayes said.
Powder Ridge also designed and built four party rooms so there are party packages. “We’re very fortunate to be
working with Powder Ridge where they offer a variety of things including their ziplining, tubing, mountain bik-
ing, water slides, in the winter they have skiing and tubing. They keep adding to what I call their arsenal and paintball is yet one more thing,” Allison Morrione said. “And it’s a great opportunity for everybody to find something they want to do and have fun.”
Tickets for paintball are available on the Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort website.

Brush truck
From A1
“However,” Tyc added, “ our town Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance saw how important it was to subsidize the remainder of this and changed it in their budget.”
The new truck was ordered in December 2022.
On May 24, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal visited the Middlefield Fire Company to congratulate the department.
“Thank you, Chief, for your leadership and all the firefighters in Middlefield for your service,” Blumenthal said.
MVFC’s new truck is being built by the manufacturer Unruh Fire and is expected to be completed in early fall.
“I would like to thank Senator Blumenthal for his support on this project, as well as the rest of the congressional delegation,” said Tyc, adding that, without their help, ““I don’t think we’d be here for today.”
The MVFC’s current brush truck is a converted 1973 Army surplus vehicle.
“It has served the fire company well. However, the vehicle lacks many safety items and features that are now standard,” Tyc said. “The truck can only hold two people in it, which poses a challenge.”
The MVFC’s new vehicle will be all-wheel drive, allowing it to respond to incidents off-road.
“You fight a lot of fire in rural areas, where the damage done can be as serious as in
urban areas,” Blumenthal said. “Those fires require a particular type of skill and professional equipment.”
Per FEMA grant requirements, MVFC’s old vehicle will be dismantled.
