Life coach writes migration memoir about leaving Mexico By Lau Guzmán Record-Journal staff

MIDDLEFIELD — Laura Cuadriello-Arreguín decided to marry her high school sweetheart when she was 44, after the couple reconnected on Facebook. Both had undergone divorces and Cuadriello-Arreguín decided to move to Connecticut in 2015 with her new husband. She left her Mexican handicrafts business, her job as a teacher and her practice as a psychotherapist.

“I’m part of the community of closeted romantics,” she said in a virtual interview. “I am very cheesy, although I try not to let it slide into the vulgar or ordinary in my writing, but to keep it deep and serious.” In Connecticut, CuadrielloArreguín worked in radio and television. In 2016, she started a self-help business called Avanza con Laura in Middlefield. She self-published a self-help book in Spanish

called “AVANZA” and sold a few hundred copies. After receiving positive feedback, she decided to continue writing. “I’m going to treat myself to another book,” she said. This June, Cuadriello-Arreguín celebrated seven years in Connecticut and launched a book of meditations about her immigration process called “Informalmente: Reflexiones” in Spanish.

The days of checkerberry sodas, bikes and kites I count myself lucky to have grown up where I did. I spent my tadpole years in a third floor apartment on Whitfield Street in Guilford, across from the green. It was good. We “Guilfordites” like to wax nostalgic about those wonderful days of yore. (Yes, I am of an age now in which “the days of yore” is an accurate term. Yore being light years ago.) The memories come flooding in. Like riding my tricycle to the end of the sidewalk and back, ringing the bell incessantly. The bell was the best part! And it was good that I could give unsuspecting pedestrians a headsup. I think I felt like a big girl because I was free of any adult supervision. A few years later I tried my hand (feet) at roller skating on that same sidewalk, but that did not go so well. I never did get the hang of it. And the sidewalk did not have much “give” to it when my

Supporters point to Hochadel’s experience working with state lawmakers and advocating for union members, students and healthcare workers. As AFT-CT President, Hochadel has worked closely with legislators, including serving on the negotiating team for the State Employee Bargaining Agent Coalition. “I know the process of how things happen in the Capitol, and I want to use that experience to hit the ground running to deliver results for families across the 13th district,” she said in a statement on her campaign website. “I know the issues, I talk to workers every day about their hardships and what the state could do to make their lives a little easier.”

“It’s a love story,” Rivera said in a phone interview. “It is easy to understand. It hooks you. I was caught by the way she describes daily life, nostalgia, encounters and reunions.” Rivera remembers the last time he spoke with Cuadriello-Arreguín. He decided to give her a book written by the Argentine doctor and psychotherapist Jorge Bucay about the search for the goddess of fortune in other horizons. After the launch in Coyoacán, Rivera greeted Cuadriello-Arreguín, and told her, “You moved on and found goddess of fortune elsewhere.” After the launch in Coyoacán, Cuadriello-Arreguín is looking for a place to launch the book in Middlefield in August, while working on a book for parents on how to discipline their children. Cuadriello-Arreguín retains a lot of affection for her native country. She arrived at the virtual interview wearing a traditional white blouse embroidered with blue flowers and retains the musical nuances of the Mexican accent. She also said she is learning a lot about the new culture and has since become an U.S. citizen. Cuadriello-Arreguín says she is learning to live with her mixed identities as a woman, Mexican and migrant. “I know I’ve made it when I can eat a hamburger with one hand and hold a tequila in the other,” she said.

Raúl Rivera, 67, came to the celebration and read a copy of “Informalmente.” He has known Cuadrello-Arreguín for more than a decade and attended counseling with her.

MONA & NICKY

Mona

R253695

Your go-to shop for fun, personalized necklace ties, bow ties, and pocket squares to fit any occasion or style!

www.etsy.com/shop/elledotkaydesigns Nicky

Two-year-old Mona was rescued from a hoarding situation. She is a very sweet girl with typical tori-tude. She loves to be petted and will ask you to pick her up. She would be great as the only cat or with a non-aggressive male cat. She was raised in a home with a small dog, so she would be good with a catfriendly dog. Mona is such a sweetheart and is ready to come home with you. Visit CatTalesCT.org/cats/Mona-2. Six-year-old Nicky is an independent cat who responds very well when you approach him. While he doesn’t prefer to be picked up, he is fairly laid back and receptive to other types of attention, such as petting and play. He'll do well in a home with another, easy-going cat. Nicky is ready for his “furever” home where he can relax and be loved. Visit CatTalesCT.org/cats/ Nicky. For more information, call 860-344-9043 or email info@CatTalesCT.org.
