Eddinger: Working to keep Durham vibrant By Josh Eddinger
It has been an honor to serve on the Durham Planning and Zoning commission for the past four years and I hope you will support me for reelection to another term.
I understand how hard it is to make a small business successful, and believe smart regulations should support small business.
My family and I chose to make Main Street our home because we value the charI was raised on a family farm, acter of our historic neighso I value the farming herborhood. I believe that it is itage that defines our town critical that we protect what and want to see it preserved. I makes Durham so special am a small business owner, so while adapting to the needs
of our community and the changing reality of the times to keep our town vibrant. In the past four years, I have learned a lot about the challenges our community faces and how smart zoning regulations can be used as a tool to combat some of these challenges. We have made progress by creating regula-
tions for farms to host events to supplement traditional farm revenue streams as well as creating regulations to allow Farm Vineyards or Farm Breweries to operate in our town. To support small businesses, we have simplified the application process for many types of businesses in our commercial and industrial zones. We also ex-
panded the types of businesses allowed to operate in our town while keeping the right amount of oversight in the special cases where it is needed. Much more work is left to be done, but I am confident we are on the right path. I hope you will support me on election day.

I am a lifelong resident of Middlefield, having attended local schools. I have worked in the field of Information Technology for over 30 years, 18 with Aetna. I served as Secretary of the Farm and Land Management Commission for 10 years.
I support open space for our lovely town. Open space conservation improves our quality of life, and impacts our tax base in a positive manner. Our natural and recreational resources need to be protected and enhanced. We have not added to our open space in many years.
I will serve and represent all citizens of Rockfall and Middlefield, regardless of affiliation, as we face the challenges of the future. There are currently several issues facing the town:
The need to update our fire facilities. The committee will soon make recommendations to bring our facilities into the 21st century. I support our first responders and their needs.
The proposed closure of John Lyman school should be a concern to all residents. Schools are an integral part of our community. When a family is choosing a place

Trying my best to end summer on a happy note My apologies, right up front. Every year I moan and groan about summer’s end, and I thought this year I could behave myself and not do that, but I don’t think I can. So if you could bear with me for just one more year (actually, I will probably do this next year, too), I would appreciate it. I’ll try to end on a happy note, though.
I don’t put on the heat for a few minutes, in order to take that nip out, because that would definitely mean that winter is starting to sneak in, and we just can’t have that. A few shivers won’t kill me.
And, of course, when I walk out my back door and see my snow shovel leaning up against the house, I think, “I know, soon. Ugh!”

I am excited to run as a candidate for Alternate on the Durham Zoning Board of Appeals as a Democrat. I have served as Alternate on the ZBA since February 2020, and I’m looking forward to continuing my service.
I have lived in Durham with my husband, Stephen, for 19 years, and we have two daughters attending RSD13 schools. I received a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. from Connecticut College, and now happily work as a yoga instructor and as the lead parent in our family.
As to qualifications, most important, I show up to meetings. Since I became an Alternate, I have been seated at every ZBA meeting held. I’m also a former real estate lawyer, having
Durham is a wonderful community in which to raise a family and I would like to see the town retain the rural and historic elements that make it special, while broadening its economic base. To keep our small community vibrant, it’s necessary for every resident to pitch in where they can, including local government. And I’m happy to volunteer my time here. I hope you’ll vote for me on Nov. 2. Thank you.

I’ve been attending Planning & Zoning meetings and educating myself on the issues and current regulations. If elected, I will attend diligently, consider the nuances of each decision, and listen to all viewpoints. I look forward to hearing all of your ideas and dreams for our town.
