Letters to the Editor Honest, insightful Editor : It is my pleasure to strongly recommend Janet Morganti for a position on the Planning and Zoning Commission in Durham. We met three years ago when I opened my business, A Touch of Country, in Durham. Janet was extremely helpful in guiding me through that process. As a previous business owner and member of the Durham Economic Development Commission, I believe she will be dedicated to enhancing the community. Janet is friendly, honest, dependable and insightful, which will make her a great asset to P&Z. Jessie Christopher

Groups line up to support Army veteran By Nadya Korytnikova Town Times

A local Army veteran is now the proud owner of a new roof. Roberto Gonzalez moved back to Connecticut this year after he got out of the service. “I did four years’ active Army in Fort Sill, Oklahoma,” the 24-year-old said. Gonzalez’s Middlefield home was selected to receive a new roof through the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, an effort to show gratitude to military veterans. Getting a new roof, said Gonzalez, “means everything” for his family. “It’s great. The service was one thing and getting things for my service is great, but to get house repairs because of what I did, feels even better.” His wife, Julia, said, “It makes me feel really blessed Army veteran Roberto Gonzalez and his wife, Julia, that we have these people in our lives helping us.” received a new roof as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. MEET THE CANDIDATES

Batorski: Vote for experience, common sense By John Batorski

I am running as an Alternate for the Planning and Zoning Commission in the Town of Durham. My wife, a retired teacher, and I have made Durham our home for over 36 years. If elected, I look forward to the challenges of economic growth and affordability the town will face, while maintaining the character of our community. During my career, I held positions with local towns managing their environmental facilities and with global environmental companies managing their project facilities. My responsibilities included managing multi-million dollar budgets of environmental control facilities in New York, Ohio and Connecticut, while reporting to the state, CTDEEP, and local boards and commissions. During my professional career, I have been a steward for protecting the environment. My educational background consists of an Associate’s Degree in Metallurgy from Erie Community College in Williamsville, N.Y. and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science from the University of Buffalo. graduated from officer candidate school and became Company Commander, serving for over eight years. I am also a private pilot. My public, private and military careers have afforded me the experience relevant in today’s political climate. In no particular order, some of the topics in the future that will require thorough debate in town are: energy, education, zoning, affordability (taxes and housing), safety, environmental impacts, preservation of open space, agriculture, the preservation of the historical district and, of course, new business. I love the rural character of Durham and would like to see the town remain affordable for everyone. Please vote for me so I can apply my experience and common sense in helping the Town of Durham with Planning and Zoning.

Wonderful candidates

The right choice

MIDDLETOWNJohn Courtenay Long, 98, of Middletown, husband of Betty (Chase) Wakeman Long for thirty-three years, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at Wadsworth Glen. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Edgar and Ethel (Frisbie) Long. A graduate of Cheshire Academy and Duke University, his last position was that of Regional Sales Manager at the Ohio Life Insurance Company in Cleveland, Ohio. A three year veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army Amphibious Forces in Casablanca, Anzio and Southern France. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. John was a genuinely kind person and always remembered to express his gratitude for life and the good deeds of others. He loved all the children of his blended family very much. Along with his wife, John is survived by his four children from his first marriage, William B.H. Long (Dolores) of Willowick, OH, Richard C. Long of Painesville, OH, Nancy L. The municipal election is Nov. 2. Durham residents, please support these wonderful candidates on the top line of your ballot: Nolan and Buckheit for Finance; Balay, Mattison, Eddinger and Morganti for P&Z; Denunzio for P&Z Alternate; Liss for Zoning Board of Appeals; and, for the first time requiring a municipal election, Geraci, Moore, Taylor and Hicks for Board of Education. Experience, integrity, and service still count and still matter. Vote for no more than the maximum number of candidates allowed for each office, but vote!

Jim has decided to run for a position on Durham’s Board of Finance. His investment consulting practice provides him the background and skills necessary to be the ideal candidate. If elected, his goal will be: “Keep the Town of Durham Moving Forward as a Great Community.” Your vote for Jim would be the right choice for Durham. Henry Coe

Janet Morganti has been a Durham resident for 37 years. She is a great candidate for the Planning and Zoning Commission, as she has over eight years experience as a local business owner and seven with the town’s Economic Development Commission.

On Nov. 2, the choice is clear. Vote Democrat.

Janet loves Durham. She believes that a strong economy makes for a strong community, and her participation on P&Z will facilitate this. She is dedicated and passionate about helping Durham’s businesses flourish. By using her talents and experience in business and local government, Janet will be a great asset to the Planning and Zoning Commission. Carolyn and Steve Rinaldi

A real helper Editor : Janine Skelps is the very definition of “helper.” She and I have worked together through the Middlefield Lions Club. Janine has also been a tremendous help while obtaining my prescriptions and vaccines at our local pharmacy. Janine is truly dedicated to helping others. As Town Clerk, I know she will put the needs of taxpayers first. She will do this by keeping her office open during evening hours, one night per week, for folks who are working during the day. Janine will also issue fishing and hunting licenses inperson as well as online, which will be much easier for those who prefer service with a smile! Roberta “Birdie” Curtis

The Democratic candidates running for office in Durham offer experience, integrity, and a longstanding commitment to public service. The Democratic Board of Education incumbents have protected our students, faculty and staff, and kept our schools open and our costs low, even in a pandemic. Let’s re-elect them! The Democratic candidates for Board of Finance, Planning and Zoning, and Zoning Board of Appeals, likewise, offer expertise, years of service, and humble, sustained commitment to our town. On Nov. 2, vote for Durham. Vote Democrat. Kristina Talbert-Slagle

Dedicated public servants Editor : Serving on one of our town’s boards is both an honor and a privilege. It also can be a difficult and time-consuming task. To keep Durham moving forward, we need board members willing to sacrifice their time and make the kind of rational, intelligent decisions we can all embrace. This year’s Democratic slate offers candidates who meet those criteria. The Democrats running for Board of Education, Board of Finance, Planning and Zoning, and ZBA are dedicated public servants. They are not running for personal gain. They hope to share their knowledge and passion to make Durham a better place. Tom Hennick

I believe in setting high performance goals for our district. I believe we can improve without breaking the financial backs of our residents by setting priorities, by supporting our teachers, and by harnessing the passion for a solid education within our communities. Thank you for granting me the opportunity to serve the community over the last five years; I humbly ask for your support to allow me to continue for the next four.

I am a lifelong resident of Durham, where I was raised with strong values. After graduating from Durham High School in 1967, I continued my education at MxCC, before transferring to ECSC and graduating in 1971 with a B.S. in education. With Connecticut certification in hand, I was hired in East Hampton as a fourthgrade teacher. I left that position to teach science and math in Guilford, where I spent the next 37 years. During that time, I earned an M.S. in biology from CCSC and ultimately earned an Institute for Science Instruction and Study fellowship that resulted in a sixth-year professional diploma from SCSU as a secondary science specialist.
