Seven years ago, Tina Fazio Hurlbert’s husband Scott was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, the second most common blood cancer.

The hike is sponsored by Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma, a collaboration between CURE Media Group and MMRF, created in 2016. They have raised about $2.5 million for cancer research through trips like this one, with patients, doctors and caregivers taking on challenging mountains to demonstrate the advancements made in recent years, according to a prepared statement.

After undergoing surgery, months of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, he is currently in remission. Multiple myeloma is a treatable but incurable blood cancer. “Prior to Scott’s diagnosis, I had never heard of multiple myeloma,” Hurlbert, a Durham resident, said in a statement. She credits his doctors and team of researchers for his ability to watch their daughters grow up. Hurlbert will travel to Iceland in August to mark her husband’s recovery and give back to the doctors and caregivers who helped him. “Being a member of MMRF Team for Cures at this Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma event allows me to take some direct action in helping to fund the research needed for my husband and so many others affected by this terrible disease,” Hurlbert said.

Francis, Szewczyk, Hennick ready to run By Bailey Wright Town Times

Durham First Selectman Laura Francis has announced plans to run for reelection this fall. Incumbent selectmen John Szewczyk and Thomas Hennick also are seeking reelection. Francis, a Republican, has served as First Selectman since 2007 and will be running for a fourth term. She previously served as town clerk, for 10 years, and was named Connecticut’s Town Clerk of the Year during that time. “I have been honored to serve the people of Durham as their First Selectman,” Francis said in a statement. “I have strived to make Durham a better place for all of our citizens to live and raise their families.” Francis said she is proud of several accomplishments during her tenure, including improvements to infrastructure, the management of town employees, and savings found in the use of grants and re-

structuring. “I am especially pleased, that after more than three decades, a Francis waterline is being constructed from Middletown that will provide clean drinking water to residences along Main Street and the abutting area that have suffered well water contamination,” Francis said, noting that this is happening with cooperation from the federal Environmental Protection Agency and several state departments at “little to no cost to our taxpayers.” She also referred to road improvement projects on Higganum Road, Coe Road, Maiden and Pickett lanes and others, which have been financed by “millions of dollars of grants” she pushed to receive from various state and federal programs. “I believe I have obtained See Election, A15

Country-style furniture, decor store opens in Durham By Bailey Wright Town Times

For Durham resident Jessie Christopher, A Touch of Country isn’t just her first store, but a realization of a long time passion for country-style furnishings.

“I just always loved this furniture. I always loved … rustic, distressed, weathered, cracked, chipped, anything,” Christopher said while pointing to items like a chipped fireplace mantle and the distressed wood cashier counter she and her husband refinished.

A Touch of Country, located at 354 Main St., opened its doors on June 1. It is stocked with American-made country-style furniture, photos, candles, and other decor.

Christopher, who has lived in town for 16 years. She said the first week of being open was surreal. “It was like it wasn't really happening, like I was in a dream,” Christopher said.

Inspired by a similar country-store in Vermont, When first considering the Christopher always wanted idea, Christopher asked her own business. However as a full-time mom for several years and a part-time employee for others, she had to wait. Then one Sunday morning last fall she was having breakfast with her Live Music • husband and decided it was time.

“It’s perfect for our town...I think it suits a lot of homes in town and the whole historic feel of the town,” Meisenkothen said. Some of Meisenkothen’s refinished items are for sale at A Touch of Country. Most of the furniture comes from Amish country in Pennsylvania. Christopher transports it back to Connecticut herself.

“I just want people to come in and find that one piece that's just going to add to their house,” she said. The store’s hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, but may change depending on the needs of customers. Christopher plans to open Wednesdays starting in September. As hours and events change, she said she will update the store’s social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright

Family-friendly Softail Cafe & Grill is open for business Durham’s newest eatery, Softail Cafe & Grill, will celebrate its grand opening this Saturday with live music and drink specials. Softail has taken over the former Artie’s Bar & Grill location at 980 New Haven Road. Artie’s closed late April after about five years in business. When the spot became available, Softail owner Paul Pastet saw it as the perfect opportunity to try his hand in the industry. “It was like a golden opportunity, a turnkey operation,” Pastet said. The site’s owner owned most of the furniture and kitchen supplies, so the place was pretty much ready to go when he arrived.

A Northford native and current resident, Pastet manages an auto body shop in Woodbridge and owns a Yankee Flooring sanding and polishing business. As his wife Kelley says, cooking comes naturally to him and although they weren’t looking to open a restaurant, it just seemed like the perfect opportunity to try. Kelley Pastet said her husband would make “amazing meals for family on holidays” only to have everyone encourage him to open a restaurant because his food was so good.

The menu features classic appetizers like fried mozzarella and loaded cheese fries, plus special meal items like a cheese steak sandwich with chopped up rib-eye and broccoli rabe with sausage. Pastet said he plans to keep a core menu, with changing specials. With the help of his

wife, who works in financial services for the Yale School of Medicine, the couple was able to open Softail in less than three weeks. Most of the inside will look similar to returning customers, but the outdoor pa-

tio was redone. With a family-friendly mantra in mind, they hope to integrate more and more into the community by hosting events and fundraisers. Paul Pastet said the fire company is already holding their weekly meetings there, and they have ideas to sell things like Christmas trees during the holidays to raise

money to give back to the town. They hope to make the atmosphere welcoming to families to come hang out with their kids, instead of just being a “biker bar” as the location has been in the past. While bikers are still welcome – the restaurant’s name refers primarily to softail Harley’s, which Paul Pastet rides – the couple wants to make sure families feel comfortable, too. Since opening on May 31, Paul Pastet says everything has been great. “People have been coming back here, telling me how good the food is and keep doing what you're doing,” he said. “A lot of the locals in Durham haven't been in here 4 or 5 years, so now they're all coming back in.” First Selectman Laura Francis was one of those visitors. She stopped in with her family. “It was really nice because there were other Durham people there that I hadn’t seen in awhile and that’s what we need, we need our destination where we can meet up with each other,” she said.

A shocking discovery in my beloved pool To My Pool: My dear, beloved pool, my BFF, I believe I owe you an apology. But first let me say from the get-go, that I have always loved you. You know that. So I really don’t have any excuse for the way I have treated you. Or should I say, not treated you. Somehow I let you slip away from me. I could see it happening, bit by bit, last summer. Your bottom always maintained a lovely shade of green. But I know – no matter how lovely, the green had no business being there. I meant to vacuum you. I really did, because I would have loved for your bottom to be a nice pristine white. There were times I felt like I was sloshing through the Everglades. But my vacuum does not always cooperate with me. Parts just take delight in going their own way and floating off, and I am left holding just a pole. Which does no good whatsoever, all by itself.

The Stepping Forward in Grief Study tests two evidence-based online/app programs created by scientists and clinicians at Uniformed Services University and Columbia University to address grief-related challenges. These programs were developed in response to earlier research suggesting that grief-related challenges can occur among bereaved military survivors, even many years following a loss, and that many surviving loved ones desire additional support. The study is now open to close friends and family members of those who died before or after Sept. 11, 2001 while serving in the military or as a result of their military service.
