DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE This year marks the diamond anniversary (75 years) of the Hanford Engineer Works project in Richland and we are celebrating the milestone on September 14 with a one-year only resurrection of the Atomic Frontier Days event! The City of Richland, National Park Service, Port of Benton, the Hanford History Project, and a number of generous sponsors have joined forces to develop a day of fun for everyone. Be ready to step back in time and enjoy an old fashioned parade, period entertainment, Hanford-style mess hall dinner, exhibits and a vintage military airplane flyover. The day will conclude with a rocking concert featuring local favorites – Less Stress & The Testers swing band! Our community owes a debt of gratitude to the Greatest Generation and I hope you’ll join me for this special day. General admission for Atomic Frontier Day is free! Are you excited to feast on a meatloaf dinner at the Mess Hall Tent? Tickets are just $7 and can be pre-purchased at the Richland Community Center. Get yours today! They will go fast! I’m also excited to announce that this fall we are strengthening our relationship with the ARC of Tri-Cities and Special Olympics of Washington. The City’s NFL Flag Football fall season now includes a “Unified” league mixing youth of all abilities to enjoy a season of NFL branded flag football. This integrated league uses the same jerseys and equipment and provides an opportunity for all children to experience the thrill of competition within a controlled and safe environment. Many thanks to the Arc of Tri-Cities and Special Olympics of Washington for their dedicated service to our community and the teamwork of the Richland Recreation staff. Last, I would like to look back at the new “Pop-up Play Day” program we initiated this summer. Richland Recreation has a long history of engaging with the community as evidenced by the cover of this guide. This year we returned to our roots and brought staff and equipment into neighborhood parks as a way to connect people with their community. We partnered with the National Park Service and their Junior Ranger Program and had a phenomenal year of programming serving over 1,200 children and their parents, helping make our City a better place to live, work and play. Thank you for your interest in Richland’s Parks and Recreation and please have a safe and enjoyable fall season. Joe Schiessl Parks & Public Facilities Director

Sports Concussion and Head Injuries (Zachery Lystedt Law) A concussion is a brain injury and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. Concussions can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications, including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or bump on the head can be serious. Concussions can’t be seen, and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury, or can take hours to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the signs of concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away. A youth athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game will be removed from competition at that time. For current information on concussions, please visit www.cdc.gov/concussion. Photo Release Photographs of participants may be taken for promotional purposes. Please notify staff or the photographer if you do not wish to have your photograph taken.

THREE RIVERS ROAD RUNNERS
www.3rrr.org Eric Greager: sageg@charter.net The 3 Rivers Road Runners have been running strong in the Tri-Cities, Washington since the late 1970’s. We welcome all who share our lifestyle of enjoying a good swim, bike or run. The 3 Rivers Road Runners are for runners and triathletes of all shapes and sizes, from the veteran ultramarathoner or Ironman triathlete to the beginner working towards that first 5 km fun run or sprint triathlon, and everyone in between. The primary goal of the 3 Rivers Road Runners is to promote running and multi-sport events in the Tri-Cities. Besides providing events for our members and athletes in the region, we hope to attract new athletes to the club that can benefit from the healthful, positive lifestyle gained through running and multi-sport. Over the years, one primary focus has been fitness for the children in our area and the battle against childhood obesity. We have helped raise thousands of dollars for local elementary school physical education programs through our Leprechaun Dash fun run in March. Our running club not only gives back to the running community, we give back to the community at large.

TRI-CITIES OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB
43
www.tricitiesoutrigger.org The Tri-Cities Outrigger Canoe Club was founded in 1998. The club practices on the Columbia River and typically attends six to seven short and long distance races each season in the Pacific Northwest. The season starts in early April and ends in October. Outrigger canoes feature a lateral support float known as an outrigger, which is fastened to one or both sides of the main hull. Unlike a single hulled canoe, an outrigger generates stability as a result of the distance between its hulls. Compared to other types of canoes, outrigger canoes can be quite fast, yet are also capable of being of being paddled in rougher water. The club owns 3 canoes. Each canoe holds 6 paddlers. Interested in becoming a member of TCOCC? Newcomers are invited to come to our training location and paddle with us on all regularly scheduled days. The club practices are held at Columbia Park Marina, three days per week, on the Columbia River. Notify the club through the website and a paddler will meet with you, half an hour prior to scheduled practice, for orientation. We will ask you to fill out a liability waiver, pay a $10.00 fee for temporary insurance, and we will provide you with a paddle, instruction, and a fun day. You are welcome to paddle with us two or three times before deciding whether to become a member. No experience needed! Must be 18 years of age and know how to swim.

Since 2005, we have raised community awareness of dog parks, held demonstration dog parks, and raised funds to help open the first off-leash dog park in the Tri-Cities area. We also worked with the City of Richland Parks and Public Facilities to open a temporary dog park at Badger Mountain Community Park while planning continued for a permanent dog park. In October 2011, our efforts were rewarded with the opening of Phase I of Paws-Abilities Place at Badger Mountain Community Park. In 2017, the park expanded to encompass the adjacent land and complete Phase II of the 5-acre park that can be seen today. The Tri-City Dog
