MANAGER’S MESSAGE Happy Spring & Summer to everyone! We are excited to bring you Richland’s Activity & Recreation Guide for May – August 2019. Inside you will find many opportunities for fun and learning this summer! You may have noticed the cover is a bit of a throwback to the nostalgic days of Richland’s past - George Prout Pool, 1950s. We are delighted to highlight Richland’s longstanding love of recreation and community activities throughout 2019! We, along with numerous community partners, will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of our beloved “secret city” with integration of this theme into several of our programs and events. Along with enhancing signature events and programs, we will be reinventing Atomic Frontier Day! Scheduled for Saturday, September 14, 2019 along the Columbia River in Howard Amon Park (once known as “Riverside Park”), this event is sure to be a capstone to your Richland summer events season! The month of May will kick off with a rocking good time as the Live @ 5 concert series is back at John Dam Plaza (Thursdays, May 30-Aug 1)! In June we have the Windermere-sponsored Friday Family Movie Series held each Friday beginning at dusk (June 14-Aug 16). The 26th Annual Cool Desert Nights (June 21-23), 10th Annual Geocoin Challenge (June 27-30), Richland Regatta (June 28-30), and See3Slam (July 13-14) are just a handful of popular events for folks of all ages! Check out pages 4-5 for an expansive list of events and exciting activities. Then hop on www.facebook.com/richlandparksandrecreation or www.richlandparksandrec.com for newly added events and more details to add to your summer planning calendars! What is new in 2019? Plenty! Rec staff will be busy bringing new programs to your parks with Pop-up Play Days, Magic Mondays and Workout Wednesdays! These multi-week program series require no pre-registration and are of no cost to you. Check out pages 6 & 7 for more details. Our 1st Pop-up Play Day @ Claybell Park 4/3/19 - over 200 participants!

The kiddos can look forward to swim lessons, day camps, pop-up play days, art classes, and STEAM & STEM activities at the Richland Public Library. Teens, adults and seniors can cut a rug in one of the many dance classes, join a card-playing club, get a workout in a fitness class, or get their cardio in at our community center’s Fitness Room. “Family Bingo” will be hosted by our Recreation staff at the Richland Community Center on a select Saturday afternoon each month – bring your family and friends of all ages! Thank you for choosing Richland Parks & Rec! Now dive into summer and explore the following pages to begin your planning! Julie Jackson Richland’s Recreation Manager jjackson@ci.richland.wa.us

WHICH CLASS SHOULD I REGISTER MY CHILD FOR? This class will focus on ways for you to enjoy water with your child. This class emphasizes parental teaching methods for water adjustment and basic skills. An adult must be in the water with the child throughout the class time. This class is designed to make your child more comfortable in and enjoy being around the water. Child will blow bubbles but is not comfortable submerging entire face in water, needs support with all swimming abilities, and is not very comfortable in the water. Child can only swim a few kicks before needing assistance. Child is comfortable putting face in water, can glide, kick, etc. for five or more feet and lifts head up to breathe. Child is ready to float on the front & back unsupported and ready to learn elementary back stroke. Child is able to swim free style and elementary backstroke without support for fifteen feet or more and is able to swim unassisted in deep end. Child may be swimming for a swim team with the youngest group. Ready to learn other strokes and is ready to breathe to the side while swimming. Child can swim fairly comfortably but needs stroke adjustments/work on endurance. Child is extremely comfortable with free style, back stroke, and may just need some help on\ breast stroke and butterfly. Child can swim all basic strokes accurately with correct breathing pattern and can swim the length of the pool comfortably without problem. The child may still need some stroke adjustments for the butterfly. Child is very comfortable in the water. Can swim all strokes two or more laps in a row. Swims on the swim team at a high level. Instructional swim will be to improve endurance and strengthen and tone muscles.

Sports Concussion and Head Injuries (Zachery Lystedt Law) A concussion is a brain injury and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. Concussions can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications, including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or bump on the head can be serious. Concussions can’t be seen, and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury, or can take hours to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the signs of concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away. A youth athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game will be removed from competition at that time. For current information on concussions, please visit www.cdc.gov/concussion. Photo Release Photographs of participants may be taken for promotional purposes. Please notify staff or the photographer if you do not wish to have your photograph taken.

WASHINGTON STATE GEOCACHING ASSOCIATION www.wsgaonline.org Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA) is a nonprofit recreational club supporting geocachers and geocaching across the state of Washington. WSGA promotes social and recreational activities for geocachers, and works with land managers to ensure support for geocaching on park lands. WSGA exists to:  Promote geocaching as a fun, family-oriented outdoor activity that increases awareness and appreciation of the environment and our parks and trails.  Provide opportunities for participants to enjoy geocaching and to socialize with other geocachers.  Educate park systems and land managers about geocaching and its benefits.  Increase awareness and support of geocaching through interaction with other outdoor groups and the public.  Encourage low-impact geocaching and promote stewardship of our natural resources.  Support "Cache In Trash Out" activities to help maintain parks and trail systems.
