MANAGER’S MESSAGE Happy New Year to you and yours! Richland’s Recreation Team and I are excited to present to you the first Activity Guide of 2020! We kick off this year focusing on health, heart and wellness! We will build on the relationships, events and activities from last year and are eager to see what 2020 has in store for our treasured community. First, let’s look back to the past few months of 2019. Our team and City family was delighted to provide our annual signature events - Winter Wonderland Festival of Lights 2019 in John Dam Plaza and Howard Amon Park and Fall Carnival 2019 in John Dam Plaza and The Parkway and MWMB – both events title sponsored by HAPO Community Credit Union. In September 2019, City staff was honored to work with many community partners to coordinate the well-attended and very successful Atomic Frontier Day 2019 in Howard Amon Park along with the accompanying parade from the Uptown Shopping Center to the newly built Richland City Hall. These community events would not be possible without generous sponsors and dedicated community partners. In November of 2019, the Richland Community Center staff completed Heart Safe Richland hands-only CPR classes taught by staff of the Richland Fire Department. By completing this training, the Community Center has been designated as a “Heart Safe Campus.” You may notice we proudly showcase this achievement by displaying “Heart Safe Richland” decals by our facility’s entry doors. We are proud to wear this heart on our building and encourage all community members to attend a FREE Heart Safe Richland Hands-only CPR class at the Community Center this winter. These 45-minute classes are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6pm and 7pm. As the Heart Safe Initiative encourages: Don’t wait for help. Be the help. In the following pages, you will find more dance classes than ever before (pages 9-12), fitness classes (page 13), social opportunities (every page), educational seminars (page 14 & 19) and even a sneak peek at some of our Summer 2020 events (pages 4 – 6)! The Richland Seniors Association (RSA) has been very busy in developing their ongoing educational presentations and series focused on Senior wellness (page 19). In particular, the “Know Your Brain/Boost Your Brain Series” has been wildly popular. RSA’s “Seniors in Planning Seminar Series” is very interesting for Seniors, as well as for caregivers, adult-age children and grandchildren of seniors. In 2020, our eyes are set on continuing to grow the health and wellness of our community through our recreational offerings and partnerships. Visit us at the Richland Community Center, 500 Amon Park Drive! Thank you for choosing Richland Parks & Recreation! Julie Jackson Recreation Manager

Sports Concussion and Head Injuries (Zachery Lystedt Law) A concussion is a brain injury and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. Concussions can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications, including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or bump on the head can be serious. Concussions can’t be seen, and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury, or can take hours to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the signs of concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away. A youth athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game will be removed from competition at that time. For current information on concussions, please visit https://www.cdc.gov/concussion/.
Photo Release Photographs of participants may be taken for promotional purposes. Please notify staff or the photographer if you do not wish to have your photograph taken.
