PIZZA, PIZZA Cogans Pizza, a hometown favorite, added a new location in NOCO. Now, locals have two spots to pick up a favorite slice in Norfolk. When family and friends come to town, we love taking them to Cogans in Norfolk. It is funky, happening, delicious, and the beer is always flowing. Recently, they opened an additional joint less than 2 miles to the north. The new locale is directly across the street from O’Sullivan’s Wharf and Eva’s in NOCO. If anyone was concerned about two Cogans in the greater Ghent area making it: they shouldn’t be. Since their recent opening, Cogans North has been swamped, with lines out the door on some nights. The menu is very similar, offering all of your favorite pizzas, but they’ve added burgers and wings. Luckily, the fabulous Artisan Pizzas currently only on the North menu will soon also be on the Cogans on Colonial menu. Another difference? Cogans North has forty-four beers on tap. FORTY-FOUR. And their tap prices are so affordable! It is still funky and certainly happening, but is missing the giant gorilla and alien attacks on the wall. Hard-core Cogans lovers can only hope that this awesome art will be added to the walls soon. There are bar chairs spanning the length of the back of the restaurant, where the bar keeps going and going, high-top tables in the center, booths across the front wall, arcade games and pool tables near the entrance, and multiple televisions covering the walls for

game watching. They have the same open kitchen concept we love from Cogans in Ghent. In addition, they have an upstairs patio that should open sometime in March. It will offer about 50 more seats and an outdoor bar. Like Cogans Ghent, they plan to allow dogs on the patio as long as you clean up. Please note, though, your canine bud will need to climb the stairs to hang with you. If you’ve never been to Cogans, you might be wondering what all of the fuss is about. Here’s hint #1: Go to Cogans. This is a local’s favorite. I have friends now living in Virginia Beach that attribute their fun times in Norfolk to this very restaurant. It is just a piece of Norfolk that needs to be experienced. Hint #2: get the garlic knots, a salad, and fight over which pizza you want to share. Seriously, a visit without garlic knots is just wrong. There are so many fabulous pizzas on the menu, we have a hard time picking one for the family to share. If you’re into mushrooms, I would highly recommend their mushroom pizza. It is, by far, the best showcase of mushrooms on a pie that I have ever seen. There isn’t a hint #3 because if you followed my first two hints, you don’t need my advice anymore. If you didn’t – well, you’re just missing out. Parents: not sure if this is a family place? Our boys, both under 10, love it. I will

Words_ Stephanie Harris

say that both locations are loud. For us, this is a good thing because both of our boys are loud. We always laugh a lot and have a great time together. They also offer a kids’ menu with activities and colors. Plus, the wait staff is super with kids; our boys feel very special there. Singles: if you’re looking at Cogans North as a location for a first date, and you want to have a meaningful conversation with the person, try sitting in the front room. If you are on an obligatory date and can’t stand to hear one more thing come out of the person’s mouth, enjoy a garlicky meal in the other room. This section is a little louder, the food will taste great, and you’ll ward off any unwanted advances with the lingering garlic scent. Plus, you can see the beer menu on the wall really well in this room,

Ph_ Cogans Pizza

so, you know … that is helpful. I am happy to see the second location open. It’s closer to our home and is yet another way that northern Colley is growing into a great place to visit. Norfolk is just one of those gems that surprises you when you don’t expect it. We offer these funky, fun places that not everyone knows to visit. This is one of the many things I love about our city. Come taste a part of the Mermaid City. Head to NOCO and try something new. Maybe I’ll see you around. I’ll be the one carrying an old black lab up the stairs to the patio with the noisy kids – ordering a few beers on tap. Cogans North (also known as Colleywood) is open from 11am-2am each day. Follow Cogans North on Facebook for daily specials.

Recycling in Norfolk goes beyond the curb. In addition to the paper, plastic bottles, cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans, and glass bottles you can recycle in your container at home; there are many other outlets for the hardto-recycle waste everyone generates. Household hazardous waste can be dropped off Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm at 1176 Pineridge Road. Plastic bags should be recycled at a local grocer in a drop off container. Clothes, shoes, and household wares that you no longer need can be dropped off at a local thrift store or at one of two drop off sites in Norfolk. Multi-family residents without access to curbside recycling can still participate by bringing recyclables to one of two drop off locations in Norfolk - Security Lane and Colonial Avenue, available 24/7.

KEEPING NORFOLK BEAUTIFUL Keep Norfolk Beautiful offers many litter prevention opportunities for residents. Last year, Keep Norfolk Beautiful won a Distinguished Service Citation for their cigarette litter prevention program. They offer a volunteer program where residents can sign up to join a cigarette litter prevention campaign, conduct a cleanup, or request a pocket ashtray. According to the Keep Norfolk Beautiful website, over 568 cigarette butts were recovered in just two city block of Norfolk. With these efforts and your help, cigarette butt litter can be a thing of the past. You may not have noticed litter before but it’s all around you. It’s in the corners, the medians, the ocean, and on the streets. It’s everywhere and you can help prevent it, clean up your city, and help the environment all at once!

Up Center Books: The Power of Second Chances Everyone deserves a second chance, and often those second chances aren’t easy to come by. Realizing he needed to care for his two young children, Darfeis Williams wanted to make a change, but his criminal background proved an obstacle he just couldn’t overcome on his own. “I ended up in jail. When I got out I wanted to change my life around,” said Darfeis. ”But I had never worked. I didn’t know how to get a job.” Up Center Books, a used bookstore in Norfolk, gave him that second chance. With the help of the job-training program, he gained not just employment skills but the ability to improve his personal relationships. Darfeis continues to utilize those skills to help others in the program. He recently came back to Up Center Books, not as a program participant but as a full-time employee. He is now the Assistant Warehouse Supervisor, and he says, “The Up Center has never given up on me.”
