Want a traditional haircut and straight razor shave? You’ll find it at Yankee Clippers Barbershop! Want a modern or unique style? You’ll find that too! I recently took my teenage son to Yankee Clippers to have his mullet trimmed. Yes, I said MULLET. My hope was that he would
enjoy the old time feel of the barbershop so much that he would decide to go with a more traditional style. He loves Sinatra, Michael Buble, the Big Band era and Swing music, so I thought that I at least had a shot at convincing him to “update” his style. But, no such luck—he wanted to keep the mullet. So, Cheri proceeded to trim and clean up his style. And he looked FANTASTIC! I was thoroughly impressed. Yes, it was still a mullet—but it was a nice one! Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping WORDS:
Monique Webb, Recycling Perks
Sometimes the alternatives are better than the originals, for the Earth at least. Do you know how much of our holiday waste WALLPAPER SAMPLES stream could be reduced if we used eco-friendly You might have some of these lying around from gift wrapping? your last living room renovation, so why not use them for the holidays? You can simply wrap a Well, in the U.S., annual trash from gift-wrap gift like it’s wrapping paper, it can’t get any easiand shopping bags totals 4 million tons. (Source: er than this! Use Less Stuff)
Let’s just think about this logically. There has to be other ways in which we can reduce this 4 million tons of wrapping and packaging. Well, that’s why Recycling Perks is suggesting the following forms of alternative gift wrapping for all of your holiday needs.
JARS & CANS If you have a gift small enough, why not give it in a jar or can? You can go crazy on the paint or simply seal the jar with a nice fabric swatch to add color to your gift. Even if you don’t have time, a simple ribbon will do the trick for a bit of flair on your jar wrapped gift.
FABRIC The number one choice for alternative gift wrapping is fabric. It’s the perfect reusable item. Try wrapping some gifts in a kitchen towel, fabric swatch or even a part of the gift, like a scarf, sweater or t-shirt. In Japan, the art of wrapping gifts in fabric is called, Furodhiki. So let’s all master the art of saving the planet by wrapping gifts in fabric.
THE NATURAL WAY What could be better than natural fibers? Try wrapping a gift in dried banana leaves, or weaving a basket with the leaves from a palm tree. You can even get super special and tie some fresh or dried flowers to the top in place of the traditional bow. Nothing beats natural, and this is the best and most environmentally friendly way to wrap all of your gifts this holiday season.
NEWSPAPERS & MAPS Did we even have to tell you about this one? This age old trick is crafty and, of course, inexpensive. You already have access to it, and the cartoon section is practically decorated already!
Save paper, save time, and make gift giving just a bit more eco-friendly by using these alternative ideas of gift wrapping this holiday season. 11

RECYCLE YOUR TREES WORDS:
It’s that magical time of the year, where everything shines and glows. Multicolored front yards, decked-out Christmas trees, enchanted parks, glass ornaments, and candy canes. But what happens to your tree when the season is over? Most trees are thrown away to end
Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
Oh Christmas tree... ...Oh Christmas tree, what if your leaves were changing?
their lives in landfills. Some don’t even make it there because they become too dry and catch fire. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, which makes them easy to reuse or recycle. Let’s look at how to give it new life or properly recycle it. Here’s to starting the New Year with the resolution to be a green citizen!
REUSE YOUR TREE
Winter decorations If you’re a crafty person, you’ll find many uses for the trunk and branches. Why not make wreaths or garland to decorate your house? Potpourri To keep the enchanted scents forever, cut some branches into small pieces. Add lemons, oranges, and all your favorite spices to make it a potpourri! Coasters Cut the trunk in disks that you can then enjoy decorating. Just check out these cool coasters we found on Pinterest!
14
happy_serendipity
Replant If your tree came with its roots intact, you can plant it outdoors and enjoy it for many years to come.
Garden mulch Do you have a garden? Cut your tree into smaller chunks to fit into a wood chipper. Spread the mulch in your garden or around plants. Mulch helps regulate soil temperatures, reduces water loss, prevents weeds, and protects your plants from the cold. Wood for your fireplace Removing the branches of your tree allows you to expose the trunk. You can saw the trunk into logs, which can be used to burn in your fireplace. Local recycling Many places offer curbside pickup or drop-off centers to recycle your Christmas tree after the season is over. Check with your local waste management department or building supply stores near you. Trees are often required to be cut into 4 ft. portions, some areas may also require them to be cut into even smaller pieces that can be placed in your recycling bin.
Bird feeder Place your tree or a few of the larger branches in your yard as an organic feeder and shelter for birds. Attract the birds by placing sunflower seeds, peanuts, or fruits like cranberries or orange slices on the branches. Fish feeder Do you own a pond? Sinking your tree into it will make an excellent refuge and feeding area for fish.
RECYCLE YOUR TREE
If you are hesitant to even get a real Christmas tree, you can also make one yourself out of metal strings, scrap wood, books, post-its, lights, corks, a ladder or a tomato cage, and more… Check out some ideas on Pinterest!
YARD WASTE REMOVAL GUIDELINES WORDS:
A
Becky Padgett, Augusta Solid Waste
utumn is here, ushering in the season of falling leaves! It also is a great time to trim bushes and trees. As you work in your yard this fall, you will accumulate mountains of leaves and limbs. It can be a huge task to get rid of those large piles, stacks, and rows of bags. Augusta Solid Waste has provided the below guidelines to help you remove the extra yard waste in a timely manner and with as little expense as possible.
6) OUT-OF-COMPLIANCE NOTIFICATION
1) PROPER SIZE
You will have until your next weekly service day to correct your specific out-of-compliance issue. Need help? Call 311.
Place 1 pile of yard waste measuring 10 cubic yards or less at the right of way in the front of your property; no item should be longer than 5 feet or too heavy. There is a weekly 10 cubic yard size limitation. Your regular weekly yard waste hauler is only allowed to remove up to 10 cubic yards.
2) CALCULATING CUBIC YARDS
Take a measuring tape and measure the length, width, and height of your yard waste pile. Multiply the length, width, and height, and then divide by 27.
3) ALL OR NOTHING
Everything placed at the right of way in front of your property is considered presented for removal. We do not remove parts of large yard waste piles over 10 cubic yards leaving some for the next week. We also do not take just 1 pile if there are several piles out whose combined size is over 10 cubic yards. Your regular weekly yard waste provider will not remove any part or portion of the yard waste pile if it is over the weekly limit of 10 cubic yards.
4) OUT-OF-COMPLIANCE
The following out-of-compliance yard waste will not be removed by your regular weekly yard waste hauler: Pile size over 10 cubic yards Any item over 5 feet in length or height Any item too heavy to manhandle Loose materials that are not contained Yard waste materials in plastic bags Yard waste mixed with garbage, bulk, or construction waste Tires (not considered yard waste)
5) CONTAINING LOOSE MATERIAL
Loose materials such as leaves, pine straw, twigs, branches, and vines should be contained in Kraft paper yard bags. You can also place loose materials in a personal 32 gallon container clearly marked “yard waste. Loose dirt or sod will not be collected.
If your yard waste is out-of-compliance, your regular weekly hauler will leave a hangtag on the pile. The hangtag will direct you to call 311 where you will be given the above-guidelines. Augusta Solid Waste will also send the property owner written notification of the out-of-compliance issue.
7) BRINGING YARD WASTE INTO COMPLIANCE
8) NEXT WEEKLY SERVICE DAY
If your out-of-compliance issue has been corrected, your regular weekly yard waste provider will remove it with no additional charges incurred. If your out-of-compliance issue has not been corrected, Augusta Solid Waste will dispatch other equipment necessary to remove the out-of-compliance issue and the property owner will receive additional charges.
9) USE OF OTHER EQUIPMENT
Augusta Solid Waste may dispatch a truck without a lift or compacting equipment, grapple truck, rear load truck, skid steer, backhoe, roll off truck, or other such equipment necessary to accommodate the removal of your out-of-compliance yard waste.
10) FEES FOR USE OF OTHER EQUIPMENT
If Augusta Solid Waste uses other equipment to remove your out-of-compliance yard waste, additional fees will be charged to the property owner. Additional fees may include $98.00 per hour for rear loader and/or grapple services, and $75.00 for skid steer/backhoe. Most average out-of-compliance removal jobs take less than 1 hour.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at 311. We really appreciate all the hard work our Richmond County residents put into maintaining their homes and yards. Your efforts help to make our community safer and healthier, as well as making it one of the most beautiful places to live.
Happy Fall Augusta!
