Plastic Recycling Myths It’s easy to understand why consumers can be confused about which types of plastics can be recycled. The facts are that 94% of ALL plastic packaging is either PETE, which is #1, and HDPE which is #2. Specifically, TFC Recycling can only accept and recycle #1 and #2 bottles and containers. All other types of plastics, especially films and food containers, are not recycled and in fact are classified as residue. Check out http://www.tfcrecycling.com/community-education/recycling-guide for a list of non-recyclabes.

Local Business Spotlight

WORDS: Shannon Freeman, Recycling Perks

Postbellum

P

10

ostbellum! The name and the concept of this unique restaurant on Main St pays homage to an era after the Civil War when our country was becoming an industrialized society. Postbellum’s menu reflects the cooking styles of days gone by, including brining, smoking, pickling and curing. These techniques are combined with today’s popular and locally grown ingredients to create an incredible variety of taste sensations. You can start your meal off with their Pork or Shrimp Cracklins or maybe the Charcuterie which boasts their house cured and smoked meats. You don’t want to miss their Confit Chicken with hoisin cherries, fried green beans, pickled enoki and truf-

fle celery mashed potatoes. If you’re in the mood for a burger try their popular Postbellum Burger with their insanely good ducky mushrooms, charred onions, turnip greens, truffled mayo and blue cheese. Don’t forget to try one of their 26 true craft beers on tap, plus you can even take home a growler from the Supply Room. As if those dishes don’t sound good enough, be on the lookout for new and fabulous dishes coming to their menu. Postbellum is also a firm believer in the concept of reduce, reuse, recycle! When they opened a little more than two years ago they wanted to use as much of the old materials that were al-

ready in the space. All of the downstairs table and booth tops are made from the flooring that once belonged in the bar area. The bar top located on the beautiful roof top deck is the refinished bar top from the old downstairs bar. Even the cabinets and doors are made from reclaimed wood. Anthony Clement, the General Manager of Postbellum is a firm believer and advocate for recycling in his professional as well as personal life. He believes that recycling is a “state of mind, if you lead, others will follow.” He has lead the way in establishing Postbellum as a green restaurant and a certified Virginia Green member. (Virginia Green

is a network of tourism related organizations and programs that are committed to protecting the environment while promoting responsible tourism.) Postbellum currently has a recycling program at the restaurant with once a week pick up. They have also changed their “to go” bags from plastic to recyclable paper bags. Personally, Anthony was thrilled when his 96 gallon recycling cart was delivered to his home. The new cart will make it easier to recycle and it encourages recycling more because of the large size. He sees the value in offering incentives through the Recycling Perks program to get everyone recycling, because every little bit matters and individuals can make a difference. You’ll want to visit Postbellum not only for their incredible food and atmosphere, but because they care about our community and our environment. The entire staff works everyday to make a difference!

RECYCLE YOUR TREES WORDS:

It’s that magical time of the year, where everything shines and glows. Multicolored front yards, decked-out Christmas trees, enchanted parks, glass ornaments, and candy canes. But what happens to your tree when the season is over? Most trees are thrown away to end

Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks

Oh Christmas tree... ...Oh Christmas tree, what if your leaves were changing?

their lives in landfills. Some don’t even make it there because they become too dry and catch fire. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, which makes them easy to reuse or recycle. Let’s look at how to give it new life or properly recycle it. Here’s to starting the New Year with the resolution to be a green citizen!

REUSE YOUR TREE

Winter decorations If you’re a crafty person, you’ll find many uses for the trunk and branches. Why not make wreaths or garland to decorate your house? Potpourri To keep the enchanted scents forever, cut some branches into small pieces. Add lemons, oranges, and all your favorite spices to make it a potpourri! Coasters Cut the trunk in disks that you can then enjoy decorating. Just check out these cool coasters we found on Pinterest!

Wood for your fireplace Removing the branches of your tree allows you to expose the trunk. You can saw the trunk into logs, which can be used to burn in your fireplace.

happy_serendipity

Fish feeder Do you own a pond? Sinking your tree into it will make an excellent refuge and feeding area for fish.

14

Garden mulch Do you have a garden? Cut your tree into smaller chunks to fit into a wood chipper. Spread the mulch in your garden or around plants. Mulch helps regulate soil temperatures, reduces water loss, prevents weeds, and protects your plants from the cold.

Local recycling Many places offer curbside pickup or drop-off centers to recycle your Christmas tree after the season is over. Richmond offers a drop off on Jan 9th.

Bird feeder Place your tree or a few of the larger branches in your yard as an organic feeder and shelter for birds. Attract the birds by placing sunflower seeds, peanuts, or fruits like cranberries, or orange slices on the branches.

Replant If your tree came with its roots intact, you can plant it outdoors and enjoy it for many years to come.

RECYCLE YOUR TREE

1/9: BRING ONE FOR THE CHIPPER Richmond Collection Site 1710 Robin Hood Rd 10:00 am – 2:00 pm If you are hesitant to even get a real Christmas tree, you can also make one yourself out of metal strings, scrap wood, books, post-its, lights, corks, a ladder or a tomato cage, and more… Check out some ideas on Pinterest!
