WORDS: Monique Webb, Recycling Perks

WE NEED YOU! There are so many ways to give back to your community. Deerfield Beach needs YOU. Check out the opportunities below and participate where you can. We are looking for you! Volunteers that is. Recycling Perks hosts a monthly volunteer MeetUp group that raises money for a different local non-profit organization every month. It’s really simple and doesn’t take much time, but boy do we make a huge impact. We want you to get involved, get community service hours and give back to Deerfield Beach. According to U.S. News and World Report, “research links youth volunteering to a higher quality of life as an adult (Moeller, 2012).” So if you’re in high school and need some community service

hours, join our ongoing MeetUp group and we will help you have a higher quality of life as an adult. Not a high school student? That’s alright, we take volunteers from all walks of life. Volunteering in the community isn’t restricted to the physically fit, the young or the brave, it’s for everyone. Even recent research studies show that, “communities with lots of volunteers are more stable and better places to live, which in turn further boosts volunteerism (Moeller, 2012).”

Let’s keep up the good work Deerfield Beach! Come out to our monthly Meet-Up events and learn how you can increase recycling rates in our city. For more information on our Meet-Up Events check out our page www.meetup.com, search “Recycling Perks”. Or, contact Monique Webb, Deerfield Beach Representative atdeerfield@recyclingperks.com.

LOCAL BUSINESS

SKI RIXEN USA WORDS: Monique Webb, Recycling Perks

Recycling Perks loves local businesses. It’s the foundation of recycling rewards in Deerfield Beach. We’d like to introduce you to Ski Rixen USA. They’ve been rewarding recyclers for nearly two years.

Q

uiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach seems like a serene place to relax and enjoy a quiet day with the family. Fortunately, that’s not the park the City of Deerfield Beach has come to know and love! The park is loaded with activities for all ages and might I say, there is no relaxing happening here, just heart pumping, mountain biking, kayaking, camping and wake boarding excitement. Ski Rixen USA is one of America’s first Cable water ski parks and it’s nestled inside Quiet Waters Park. Obviously, water is the theme of this

4

park, and Ski Rixen USA has been the main attraction since 1983. Don’t worry about the fish; Ski Rixen USA cares about the environment and there are no boats on the lake! Ski Rixen USA has an advanced water skiing cable system that is able to pull you ever so silently through the waters of Quiet Waters Park. Because of this and many other reasons, Ski Rixen USA was voted Best Place to Get Wet in 2009 and won the “Best Place To Cable Ski and Wakeboard” Award, from City Link magazine in 2010. Caring for the environment and having fun go hand in hand.

Deerfield residents know that Ski Rixen USA serves as a promise of affordable fun and a full day water skiing or enjoying any of the other sports they offer. Wakeboarding and waterskiing are just the tip of the iceberg. Anyone can enjoy a full day of slalom, trick skiing, kneeboarding or even surfing without waves! You might fall in love with Ski Rixen USA after just one day. Tired after your ride? You can check out the Ski Rixen USA Pro Shop and get wake ready… for next time. They have everything you would ever need for another day like wakeboards,

“I love working at Ski Rixen USA, it’s a relaxed work environment and everyone gets along. We have a great time teaching our new and return customers and they have a ride of a lifetime every time they come.”

wake skates, cool apparel and various water friendly gear. Want to take it to the high seas? Their Pro Shop even stocks the best gear for cable riding behind your boat. They have it all. All the best brands like Hyperlite, LiquidForce, Oakley, O’Neill, ProTec, Straight Line, and they even have wakeboard DVD’s for your educational needs.

If you’re not so confident in your abilities you can always sign up for a group or individual lesson. The instructors at Ski Rixen USA can teach you how to kneeboard, wakeboard, wake skate, or waterski. They even have the ability to speed up or slow down your cable speed so that you can learn at a pace that fits your individual needs. Whether you want to get on board for the first time

or take your wake skills to the next level, Ski Rixen USA’s team of instructors can lead you down the right path. During select weeks in June, July and even August, many Deerfield Residents ages 7 to 15 enjoyed either the single day or weekly Ski Rixen USA Wake Camps. Their professional staff assist campers in getting active, making friends

and most importantly having some summer fun! There’s nothing better than an exhilarating ride on the water for campers during those long, hot summer days. Visit Ski Rixen USA inside Quiet Waters park at 401 S. Powerline Road, Deerfield Beach, for fun you’ll never forget!

Most smokers who would never consider tossing a can or paper cup out of their car window or onto the beach, will carelessly “flick” their cigarette and cigar butts. Sadly, since smokers have been asked to take it outdoors, it is estimated that as much as 75% of all cigarette butts end up inappropriately disposed of in our environment as litter! Tobacco products, including cigarette and cigar butts, are the mostlittered item in America, representing nearly 38 percent of all items littered, according to “Litter in America,” the Keep America Beautiful landmark study of litter and littering behavior.

6

Although cigarette butts are the smallest pieces of litter, they accumulate in corners, gutters and recreation areas like our beaches. They are easily carried by rain into local waterways where they endanger marine life. Cigarette filters contain a form of plastic that does not biodegrade and persists in the environment for years. They are costly to clean up, and businesses, property owners and municipalities bear the expense of cleanup.

ness, installing ash receptacles and distributing pocket ashtrays have made a big difference in decreasing litter and ultimately helping to keep other communities cleaner,” said project leader and Recycling Specialist, Debra Shaw. “Using this program to bring attention to the issue, we expect similar reductions in the target areas of Deerfield Beach.” As a positive way to say “Thank you, for being a responsible smoker” several businesses at the beach, as well as Ocean Rescue staff, will offer free pocket ashtrays to adults (Starting August 3rd and while supplies last).

In August, The City of Deerfield Beach is implementing an awareness campaign which will target cigar tip and cigarette butt litter all along Deerfield. “The cigarette litter prevention pro- For more information contact gram has been tested and has Debra Shaw at (954)480-1425 or proven to consistently cut ciga- DShaw@Deerfield-Beach.com. rette litter by at least half. CITY TAKES AIM AT CIGARETTE LITTER

Yep, cigarettes are litter, too, and they’re all over the streets, beaches, and community. The City of Deerfield Beach is taking huge strides to clean up the community you live in, but your help is needed. WORDS: Debra Shaw, City of Deerfield Beach

Deerfield Beach encourages the use of pocket ashtrays. They offer a safe, litter free disposal alternative for smokers.

Cigarette butts are litter, but they’re also creating a hazard for our marine and wildlife. Keep litter in its place the trash can or ashtray!
