RECYCLING PERKS CREATIVE ART CHALLENGE 2016 WORDS:
Valerie Winrow, Director of Environment, Social Responsibility & Governance Engagement, City of Atlanta
The City of Atlanta thanks its residents and Perks Partners for a great year of recycling in 2016. Because of your support, 11375.02 tons of waste was diverted from landfill disposal. We look forward to increasing recycling participation and awareness throughout the city. Atlanta students are helping to pave the way. Students between the ages of 4 and 18 were recently invited to participate in the Recycling Perks Creative Art Challenge. Students around the city created posters to contribute to the Atlanta recycling education. The students’ creations are now being used across social media and other advertising to promote recycling throughout the city. Most notably their artwork will be seen on Public Works recycling trucks. Congratulations to the following students with winning entries: Teyana Mathis, 1st Place Elementary School; Joevonte Stuckey, 2nd Place Elementary School; and Naomi White, High School. Timothy Dingle, a teacher at Thomas D. Slater, was also awarded a $50 Gift Certificate for his efforts in encouraging the most student submissions in the art contest. All participating students were recognized with certificates of appreciation.

“True green” St Patrick’s Day WORDS:
Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
This year, as you wear green for St Patrick’s Day, don’t forget to also go really green!
I. Find a four-leaf clover! Go outside and take a hike! It could become your new St Patrick’s Day tradition.
II. Plant a tree Another idea for a new St Patrick’s Day tradition could be to plant a tree, which will support a critical resource that promotes clean air and water.
III. Buy green supplies for the party If you need party supplies, such as plates and cups, remember to look for recyclable or compostable ones. Also watch out for the SFI label, which means that the wood fiber used to make the product or packaging comes from responsibly managed forests. As always, don’t forget to bring reusable bags when shopping!
IV. Wear true green clothes
VII. Use green dye that is truly green
Not only the color should be green, the clothes could also be eco-friendly, which is great for the environment and made from high-quality ingredients that won’t irritate your skin. The trend is easy to start since even mass market brands have started to make their own organic and vegan clothing lines.
Dye your food and beverages green using eco-friendly, natural food coloring that you can make from spinach or sap. Store-bought food coloring and dyes often include chemicals that are harmful to you and the environment.
V. Get real accessories
green
Reuse to be green. Find your St Patrick’s Day accessories at thrift stores and other places where used goods are sold.
VI. Eat true green food Start by buying local and making sure you are eating foods that are in season. Trying to consume less meat to help reduce your carbon footprint on the environment is also a green way to be greener. Last but not least, you can recycle your food by turning it into compost for your garden.
VIII. Drink green Unfortunately, traditional hops drinks are made using harmful pesticides. Instead, you can try vegan options like Bulmers Pear Cider and Krombacher Pils or vegetarian options like Harp Irish Lager.
IX. Help kids be green for your city Encourage kids to give back to the city while making money for their school by participating in the Recycling Perks Give Back campaign. Contact us at info@recyclingperks.com to participate. Happy green St Patrick’s Day!!

City of Atlanta Launches Cigarette Waste Reduction Program to Help Reach Zero Waste Goal WORDS:
Valerie Winrow, Director of Environment, Social Responsibility & Governance Engagement, City of Atlanta
In celebration of America Recycles Day held on November 15th, the City of Atlanta announced the launch of “Clean Streets,” a recycling program created by the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, the Department of Public Works and the Keep Atlanta Beautiful Commission to properly dispose of cigarette waste in Downtown Atlanta and promote the city’s zero waste goals. In partnership with the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) and TerraCycle – an organization which partners with municipalities to bring recycling solutions, the City of Atlanta has installed fifty cigarette butt and ash receptacles in highly-traveled sidewalk areas throughout Downtown Atlanta.
6
“Today, Atlanta joins a number of cities in the United States committed to keeping the number one littered item in the world off the local streets and out of landfills,” said Richard Mendoza, Commissioner of the Department of Public Works. We are delighted to champion this effort towards litter reduction. It is our hope
that with the success of the program in Downtown, we will be able to install additional cigarette disposal receptacles in other high traffic areas of the city.” All cigarette waste collected in the “Clean Streets” program will be sent to TerraCycle. TerraCycle will then donate $1 for every pound of cigarette butts recycled to the Keep America Beautiful Commission to fund and administer litter prevention programs. “As a major destination for Atlanta residents and visitors, we are excited to launch this important recycling program in partnership with the City of Atlanta,” said A. J. Robinson, President of Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District. “The new receptacles will be installed at transition points where cigarette butt littering occurs frequently in Downtown, such as outside retail stores, restaurants, bars, hotels, office buildings, parking lots and bus shelters.”
To ensure that the “Clean Streets” program becomes an integral part of the city’s ongoing litter reduction activities, ADID and the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability will provide public education and outreach, and ensure the long-term maintenance of the receptacles. Thanks to the Zoo Atlanta, Reko, a yellow-naped Amazon parrot, is helping in this effort. “We are proud to partner with the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District and TerraCycle,” said Stephanie Benfield, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. “Our goal is to take the litter off our streets and make it a valuable end-use commodity through a public-private partnership with TerraCycle, and educate residents and visitors about littering with ADID.” In 2011, the City of Atlanta became a Zero Waste Zone and committed to new projects and policy initiatives which promote sustainability practices, including climate protection, energy reduction and clean water initiatives.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME INFOGRAPH: Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
Daylight Saving Time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer. It begins at 2 am on March 12, 2017, and ends at 2 am on November 5, 2017.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
8 months: Daylight Saving Time (from March to November) 5 months: Standard Time
WHEN DID IT START?
The idea of Daylight Saving Time was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, but was first put in place during World War I.
DID YOU KNOW?
In the United States, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not follow Daylight Saving Time. The US territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and American Samoa also do not observe Daylight Saving Time. Some countries refer to "Daylight Saving Time" as "Summer Time." There are discussions about whether Daylight Saving Time still saves energy 10
or not nowadays, but most people still agree that it’s nice to have longer nights during the summer time.
LONGER NIGHTS
It allows daylight for an additional hour in the evening.
MORE OUTDOORS It gives people more time to enjoy the outdoors after work hours.
WHY A DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME?
LESS CRIME It decreases crime rate (7%) since crime happens mainly at night.
ENERGY It decreases the need for artificial light, heating, and cooling.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated to demonstrate support for environmental protection and promotion of harmony with nature. Did you know that the day was first officially celebrated on April 22, 1970? Countries around the world recognize Earth Day as a time to promote outdoor eco-friendly activities such a picking up litter, planting trees and gardens, walking/cycling and other alternative modes of transportation rather than driving, to mention a few. Earth Day is also a chance to increase awareness about the effects of environmental degradation, including pollution and global warming, and to promote the importance of pro-ecological endeavors, including ecologically friendly agriculture, and wastewater treatment projects. How will you celebrate? Share your photos on social media using #ATLEarthDay and tag us @recyclingperksatlanta!

Why recycling isn’t enough & the 3 Rs WORDS:
Recycling has been around for quite some time now, and it has begun to catch on and in some cases gain momentum. This is a good thing, and one that is much needed; however, it only takes a little research to come to the conclusion that recycling alone will not solve our problems. Almost everyone has heard the adage “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, it is presented that way because they are actually in order from most to least impactful. While recycling aids in reducing the amount of recyclable waste that makes its way into landfills it does nothing to eliminate the use of nonrecyclable materials or their reuse. In actuality, reducing the waste we produce in general is by far the most impactful way to ensure that we start to make a turn for the better and save our depleting resources, with an overall goal of becoming a “zero waste” society.
14
we must personally reduce the amount that we consume while also shifting to consume only those products and services that are optimized to reduce waste. This calls for a change in engineering, design, and manufacturing methods and technologies, which will only occur if and when we start to demand them. Whenever possible, choose to buy goods that are not packaged at all, and only using the blue recycling bin as a last resort.
Transitioning to a zero waste society is not something any one person, organization, community, or country can do on its own. To truly achieve this goal,
We have also become a society that would rather replace something than attempt to or have it fixed. This has resulted in a diminishing number of skilled repair technicians and craftsmen, and more and more repairable items being tossed out. This is especially true for electronics, we have become more and more dependent on electronic devices in our everyday lives, and when they fail us we tend to get the latest and greatest to replace them. In many cases your devices can be repaired for a reasonable price if you are willing to
Reduce
Reuse
T. Hungate, Volunteer Author
do some research and shop around. So what can you do to help? Well, start by getting smart on what options are available to you. Know where and how to reduce the amount of waste you produce, search online for ways to creatively reuse items, and lastly, know what you can and cannot recycle. Once you are armed with this knowledge, you can start to identify the easy or quick changes you can make, such as having reusable grocery bags in all of your vehicles and purchasing a water filtration system. These are just a couple of quick and easy things that you can do that will greatly reduce waste. Resources are not in short supply!!!! The internet brings all you could ever want to know to your fingertips. Whether you choose to Google, use social media, or take online classes, the amount of information readily available is immeasurable.
