BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS WORDS:

A new school year is upon us. This can be an exciting time for students and parents - and sometimes a bit scary too. Plan to make the transition from summer schedule to school schedule an easy and fun one with these tips: 1. Sleep for school. Setting up a regular bedtime and wake-up routine before school starts is a crucial step in preparing your children for their new schedule and ensuring that they are well rested and able to do their best at school. 2. Walk through it. Escorting younger children to the classroom can help with the transition. Familiarize your children with key places such as the bathroom, gym, library, and cafeteria — they’ll feel more confident if they know where everything is. Attend your school’s open house with your children so that they can meet their new teacher(s) and school staff. 3. Talk it out. Talking to your children about school is important. Each year brings with it a new set of challenges and responsibilities. Help your children by talking with them

throughout the school year. You are their best advocate and are best equipped to help them navigate their expanding environment. 4. Keep your eyes (and ears) open. If your children’s eating or sleeping habits have changed drastically, it may be a sign that they are having difficulty adjusting to their new grade. The first few weeks of school are a time of transition and can be a bit overwhelming for everyone. Expect some changes as the year progresses. 5. Connect. Communicating with your children’s teacher on a regular basis is an essential part of caring for their education. Teachers can alert you to any emotional, social, or academic difficulties they perceive in your children at school and you can do the same for changes at home. 6. Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle. Encourage your children to explore ways in which they can reuse or repurpose items from their previous school year. School supply lists often list the supplies expected to be needed for the entire

Suzie Vance, Recycling Perks

school year. Instead of buying all of the supplies at one time, buy what your children might need in a school quarter. You can then determine how much will be needed for the next quarter, thereby reducing the amount of unused supplies at the end of the school year. Encourage your children to explore ways in which they can help to recycle at home and at school. Let them know that their efforts matter. 7. Redeem Recycling Perks rewards points. Lead by example! Many of our Reward Partners offer rewards that children love. Redeem your points often and let your children know when you are redeeming a reward that you love. If they are old/mature enough, consider adding them to your Recycling Perks account so that they can redeem rewards that interest them. 8. Involve your children in creating content for Recycle Augusta-Richmond County. We’d love to feature your child’s artwork or articles in future issues! Recycling for beginners:

WORDS: Monique Webb, Recycling Perks

1. REduce 2. Reuse 3. Recycle

Use less of something you normally throw away or cannot reuse in any way (like tissues). Find new ways to use the things you already have, or give your things to someone who can use them (like old toys or clothes). All of your plastic, paper, metal, and aluminum are recyclable, so put them in your recycling bin (all the cans and bottles in your house can be recycled and made into new cans, bottles and even clothes!).

The Classy Closet When Help Can’t Wait As our population ages, nursing homes provide much needed care and support to those in need of nursing care. Many of our loved ones who reside in these homes lack the basic comforts that we take for granted. Items like facial tissues, socks, snacks, etc., are often not provided through the homes themselves, which means that if the individual has no one to provide those items for them they will go without. Over the months of March and April 2016, recyclers have raised money for the local animal rescues, the Augusta Animal Services and the CSRA Humane Society, with mouse clicks. People who recycle don’t only care for the planet, they also care for the animals who live on it. That’s why, over two months, $1,000 have been raised thanks to our dedicated recyclers! For every new member registration, or additional users added to an existing account, the local incentive program Recycling Perks donated $2 for the two rescues to share. “We love to give back to our community, and with the help of our awesome recyclers, it’s even more enjoyable!” says Bill Dempsey, President of Recycling Perks. The Augusta Animal Services and the CSRA Humane Society each received a $500 check. All year long, Recycling Perks rewards registered recyclers for their efforts with more than 100 discounts and freebies from local businesses in the area, who get free exposure through the program. Registering at RecyclingPerks.com is simple and free for residential Solid Waste customers residing in the Augusta, GA service area. By recycling regularly, Recycling Perks members have the opportunity to earn up to $25 per month in discounts. Here’s how Recycling Perks works: •Augusta Solid Waste residential customers can activate their free account at www.RecyclingPerks. com. It takes less than two minutes •Once a customer is enrolled, their cart will be automatically assigned to their household. If their cart is not automatically associated for some reason, they can add their cart to their online account by entering the serial number from the cart •Every time their recycling cart gets picked up at the curb on their normal pick up day, the associated Recycling Perks account will automatically receive 25 points •Recyclers can log in 24/7 to RecyclingPerks.com and redeem earned points for discounts at local businesses. They can add household members to the account allowing them to share the earned points.

Recycling for pros

“How to go Zero Waste” WORDS: Monique Webb, Recycling Perks

Zero Waste - We hear the term all the time, but how do we actually go from thinking about being Zero Waste to actually being Zero Waste? The first step toward eliminating waste is not bringing waste into your home in the first place. Every room can be a place for Zero Waste, starting with the kitchen. Disposable is the easy way out, but to go Zero Waste we have to think about longevity. No more disposable plates, cups or utensils. Stick to your regular glassware and ceramic dishes to reduce waste. Paper towels not here. Try using only reusable dish rags as an alternative to the single use paper towel. Where waste is concerned, the biggest waste generator in the kitchen is your food packaging. Thankfully, there are some ways to get to zero. Using things like assorted glass jars and cotton produce bags for your grocery shopping can greatly reduce the number of plastic bags you bring home from the grocery store. People may wonder why you’re bringing empty jars and containers into the store, but when they see you saving the planet one step at a time, you may gain loads of kudos and support! Don’t worry, we know that your favorite cereal already comes in a box, and you can’t help it, but on the way to Zero Waste, buying some items in bulk can be

a better option. Plus, that extra-large cereal box could double as a Sponge Bob piñata at the next party. Did you know Zero Waste can make its way out of the home and into the office? Try to consciously reduce waste while on the job by going digital in the office, and refusing to print! Why waste paper printing your meeting notes? Just use your tablet! You can type additional notes on it without having to worry about running out of ink (just make sure it’s charged). Another office space Zero Waste idea is to bring your own lunch. Styrofoam may be a popular way to store and deliver food, but when it comes to the planet, Styrofoam is a no-no. Not only is it not recyclable in most cities throughout the United States, it’s loaded with harmful chemicals. Let’s just ditch the whole thing and enjoy a home cooked meal in a reusable, chemical free glass or aluminum container. Composting is the “end all, be all” of a Zero Waste reality. Taking the food scraps that you would have normally thrown away and composting them is a great way to make rich soil for your garden. In as little as a month, your athome compost bin will produce soil from your household organic materials changing your waste into a reusable resource.
