SPRING YARD CLEAN-UP TIME! WORDS: Becky Padgett, Augusta Solid Waste
As the sun begins to warm the earth, Mother Nature awakens from her long winter’s nap. That is when things begin to spring! Once again green emerges from the ground and peeks from trees and bushes. Everyone heads back outside to clean up the winter debris and to begin the spring garden. In addition, everyone is sprucing up for Spring holidays and preparing for Masters visitors. All of the spring clean-up activity can create an overwhelming amount of yard debris for disposal. Please keep in mind the Environmental Services Guidelines for yard waste and bulk waste removal.
1) Proper Size Place 1 pile of yard waste measuring 10 cubic yards or less at the right of way in the front of your property; no item should be longer than 5 feet or too heavy. There is a weekly 10 cubic yard size limitation. Your regular weekly yard waste hauler is only allowed to remove if there is 10 cubic yards or less.
2) Calculating Cubic Yards Limit is 10 cubic yards. Take a measuring tape and measure the length, width, and height of your yard waste pile. Multiply the length, width, and height, and then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
3) All or Nothing Everything placed at the right of way in front of your property is considered presented for removal. We do not remove parts of large yard waste piles over 10 cubic yards leaving some for the next week. We also do not take just 1 pile if there are several piles whose combined size is over 10 cubic yards. Your regular weekly yard waste provider will not remove any part or portion of the yard waste pile if it is over the weekly limit of 10 cubic yards.
4) Out-of-Compliance The following out-of-compliance yard waste will not be removed by your regular weekly yard waste hauler: • Pile size over 10 cubic yards • Any item over 5 feet in length or
height • Any item too heavy to manhandle • Loose materials must be contained • Yard waste materials should be in 32 gal container or paper lawn bags; not in plastic bags • Yard waste mixed with garbage, recycle, bulk, or construction waste • Tires will not be collected at the right of way.
5) Containing Loose Material Loose materials such as leaves, pine straw, twigs, branches, and vines should be contained in Kraft paper yard bags. You can also place loose materials in a personal 32 gallon container clearly marked “yard waste”. Loose dirt or sod will not be collected. Spring is when everyone seems to work in their yards at the same time. With so much debris placed at the right of way, it takes a lot more time to remove it all. It would be helpful not to wait to the last minute to prepare your property for Masters, Easter, and spring break. Begin early and please follow the guidelines to give us time to get the yard and bulk waste removed before your guests arrive. 3

“True green” St Patrick’s Day WORDS:
Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
This year, as you wear green for St Patrick’s Day, don’t forget to also go really green!
I. Find a four-leaf clover! Go outside and take a hike! It could become your new St Patrick’s Day tradition.
II. Plant a tree Another idea for a new St Patrick’s Day tradition could be to plant a tree, which will support a critical resource that promotes clean air and water.
III. Buy green supplies for the party If you need party supplies, such as plates and cups, remember to look for recyclable or compostable ones. Also watch out for the SFI label, which means that the wood fiber used to make the product or packaging comes from responsibly managed forests. As always, don’t forget to bring reusable bags when shopping!
IV. Wear true green clothes
VII. Use green dye that is truly green
Not only the color should be green, the clothes could also be eco-friendly, which is great for the environment and made from high-quality ingredients that won’t irritate your skin. The trend is easy to start since even mass market brands have started to make their own organic and vegan clothing lines.
Dye your food and beverages green using eco-friendly, natural food coloring that you can make from spinach or sap. Store-bought food coloring and dyes often include chemicals that are harmful to you and the environment.
V. Get real accessories
green
Reuse to be green. Find your St Patrick’s Day accessories at thrift stores and other places where used goods are sold.
VI. Eat true green food Start by buying local and making sure you are eating foods that are in season. Trying to consume less meat to help reduce your carbon footprint on the environment is also a green way to be greener. Last but not least, you can recycle your food by turning it into compost for your garden.
VIII. Drink green Unfortunately, traditional hops drinks are made using harmful pesticides. Instead, you can try vegan options like Bulmers Pear Cider and Krombacher Pils or vegetarian options like Harp Irish Lager.
IX. Help kids be green for your city Encourage kids to give back to the city while making money for their school by participating in the Recycling Perks Give Back campaign. Contact us at info@recyclingperks.com to participate. Happy green St Patrick’s Day!!

Avon calling! Avon is one of the oldest and most recognized brands in the country, and is an innovator in beauty and skin care. Established in 1886, Avon was based on the idea that women could earn an independent income “in support of their well-being and happiness”. Your local Avon manager, Tonya Thomas, can tell you all about it. Tonya has been a proud supporter of Recycling Perks and our efforts to encourage recycling.
Tonya was the first Recycling Perks reward partner to participate in our Back to School Raffle. She donated $100 to this campaign, and in the process encouraged residents of Richmond County to recycle. She was also one of the first reward partners to participate in our Reward Partner Raffle, donating $50 worth of Avon products to the winner.
You can find Tonya every weekend at the Barnyard Flea Market, located at 1625 Doug Barnard Parkway, Augusta. She has a beautiful display of Avon products including beauty, skin care for men and women, bath and hair, and fragrances. If you’ve never visited an Avon store before, you’re in for a treat. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME INFOGRAPH: Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
Daylight Saving Time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer. It begins at 2 am on March 12, 2017, and ends at 2 am on November 5, 2017.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
8 months: Daylight Saving Time (from March to November) 5 months: Standard Time
WHEN DID IT START?
The idea of Daylight Saving Time was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, but was first put in place during World War I.
DID YOU KNOW?
In the United States, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not follow Daylight Saving Time. The US territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and American Samoa also do not observe Daylight Saving Time. Some countries refer to "Daylight Saving Time" as "Summer Time." There are discussions about whether Daylight Saving Time still saves energy 10
or not nowadays, but most people still agree that it’s nice to have longer nights during the summer time.
LONGER NIGHTS
It allows daylight for an additional hour in the evening.
MORE OUTDOORS It gives people more time to enjoy the outdoors after work hours.
WHY A DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME?
LESS CRIME It decreases crime rate (7%) since crime happens mainly at night.
ENERGY It decreases the need for artificial light, heating, and cooling.

EARTH DAY, April 22, 2017 Do You Know the Origin of Earth Day? Earth Day began in the early 1970’s. The concept was created by two men, John McConnell, a San Francisco activist, and a Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson. These gentlemen wanted to find a way to get the American people involved in a grassroots demonstration concerning conservation and preservation of the Earth. Each year Augusta Environmental Services Department has participated in the festive activities. Employees from the department volunteer their time for the day and provide resources to help educate the citizens of Richmond County. We are available to the public to answer questions concerning all services provided by the Augusta Environmental Services. During the festival our employees provide environmental demonstrations and educate the community on the changing ordinances. We also provide literature on recycling, yard waste, bulk waste, cart placement, and our Assisted Collections Service Program. We help customers with cart requests and any issues or concerns they may have concerning the services they are receiving. This event is rapidly approaching so be prepared to come out and enjoy the weather, presentations, games, demonstrations, giveaways, and much more on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Why recycling isn’t enough & the 3 Rs WORDS:
Recycling has been around for quite some time now, and it has begun to catch on and in some cases gain momentum. This is a good thing, and one that is much needed; however, it only takes a little research to come to the conclusion that recycling alone will not solve our problems. Almost everyone has heard the adage “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. It is presented that way because they are actually in order from most to least impactful. While recycling aids in reducing the amount of recyclable waste that makes its way into landfills it does nothing to eliminate the use of nonrecyclable materials or their reuse. In actuality, reducing the waste we produce in general is by far the most impactful way to ensure that we start to make a turn for the better and save our depleting resources, with an overall goal of becoming a “zero waste” society.
14
we must personally reduce the amount that we consume while also shifting to consume only those products and services that are optimized to reduce waste. This calls for a change in engineering, design, and manufacturing methods and technologies, which will only occur if and when we start to demand them. Whenever possible, choose to buy goods that are not packaged at all, and only using the blue recycling bin as a last resort.
Transitioning to a zero waste society is not something any one person, organization, community, or country can do on its own. To truly achieve this goal,
We have also become a society that would rather replace something than attempt to or have it fixed. This has resulted in a diminishing number of skilled repair technicians and craftsmen, and more and more repairable items being tossed out. This is especially true for electronics. We have become more and more dependent on electronic devices in our everyday lives, and when they fail us we tend to get the latest and greatest to replace them. In many cases your devices can be repaired for a reasonable price if you are willing to
Reduce
Reuse
T. Hungate, Volunteer Author
do some research and shop around. So what can you do to help? Well, start by getting smart on what options are available to you. Know where and how to reduce the amount of waste you produce, search online for ways to creatively reuse items, and lastly, know what you can and cannot recycle. Once you are armed with this knowledge, you can start to identify the easy or quick changes you can make, such as having reusable grocery bags in all of your vehicles and purchasing a water filtration system. These are just a couple of quick and easy things that you can do that will greatly reduce waste. Resources are not in short supply!!!! The internet brings all you could ever want to know to your fingertips. Whether you choose to Google, use social media, or take online classes, the amount of information readily available is immeasurable.
