County vacant lot ordinance states: -

Weeds, undergrowth or other plant life cannot exceed 12 inches high. Structures on the property must be maintained. Stagnant water, trash, debris and other objects that are unsightly or unsanitary are prohibited Ăą this causes infestation of rodents, vermin and can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. It is the ownerĂs responsibility to comply with this ordinance, according to the annual notice. If the violations have not bee corrected after 14 days from the date of the annual notice, the city of Augusta will come and take care of the issues at the expense of the property owner.

When a vacant lot is reported as not maintained, the county steps in:

If the grass is measured over twelve inches, itĂs too tall. A measuring device is used to measure the height.

Vacant lot is clean, trash is picked up, and the lot looks freshly maintained.

The County will arrive at the lot and mow the overgrown vegetation and pick up all debris and trash.

The County will issue a bill to the owner of the vacant lot for the expenses and labor incurred.

Collect tin cans and clean them . Fill each can with water, and freeze over night until solid (the ice stabilizes the can and prevents it from bending when yo u punch holes). Grab a hammer and na ils, or a drill. You can either drill the holes in to the can without a pattern, or you can pr int a pattern onto a paper that you will tape to the can and use as a guide. Soda Bottles and Cans Fact or Fiction WORDS:

FICTION: Americans don’t recycle a lot of aluminum.

FICTION: Aluminum is a major part of our solid waste stream.

FACT: Americans recycle about 120,000 aluminum cans every minute – almost 535 billion since 1972 – enough to reach to the moon and back 85 times!

FACT: All of that aluminum only makes up about 1% of the total solid waste in the United States.

FICTION: We use over 1 billion aluminum soda cans each year.

FICTION: You need to recycle a lot of aluminum cans to save energy.

FICTION: Americans use about 1,000,000 plastic bottles each day.

FACT: Recycling just ONE aluminum can saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for more than 24 hours.

FACT: We use about 2,500,000 plastic bottles EVERY SINGLE HOUR in the United States.

FICTION: Plastic is the most recycled item in the United States.

FICTION: Plastic water bottles are heavier than they used to be.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE!

FACT: Aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled item in the U.S. More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.

FACT: A few years ago an empty half-liter water bottle weighed 22 grams. Now, it’s 8.5. (Soda bottles are heavier so they can withstand the carbonation.)

FACT: The number is actually 80 billion aluminum soda cans each year!

Suzie Vance, Recycling Perks

FICTION: You can only recycle aluminum or glass 50 times before it becomes unrecyclable. FACT: There’s no limit to how many times aluminum and glass can be recycled.

Recycle all of your soda bottles and cans. If you’re not home, and don’t have access to a recycling container, take your soda packaging with you to place them in your recycling container at home.

Please place soda bottles and cans in your curbside recycling container!

Recycling Perks Loves Augusta Businesses Recycling Perks has been working with Augusta businesses for over four years. Some of our wonderful businesses have been around for over a century, like Hildebrandt’s. Others are newer, like PoPpin’ Stop. Some are local hot spots like The Bee’s Knees, and others are out-of-the-way gems that many don’t know about, like Etched Memory. But they all have something in common: A desire to be the very best at what they do as they encourage Augusta and Richmond County residents to recycle.

Our business partners offer valuable rewards to local residents who recycle, and increase their exposure in the local community through their affiliation with Recycling Perks. If you’ve ever been to an event that Recycling Perks has been a part of, you may have noticed that we have flyers and business cards from some of our reward partners. We make these available to residents as a way of showing our support for the businesses who are a part of our family of valued reward partners. It’s just one of the ways that we help to spread the word about our awesome businesses!

Recycling Perks is always striving to add new and exciting reward partners, and welcome the opportunity to partner with local businesses. Call us today to learn how you can be a part of our growing reward partner family.

Leave the Earth the way you found it...

Camping Keep recyclables separate/bagged, and dispose of properly. Don’t forget to put out your campfire. Take along reusable cooking/dining containers instead of disposable items.

Beach Take your own water bottle. Bring your empty sunscreen bottles back home to be recycled. Take your own drinks/snacks in reusable containers. Much cheaper than disposables!

10

No one wants this:

...Clean up your litter!

Park Don’t forget to look for small items that may have been discarded. Serve drinks/snacks/meals using everyday dinnerware/silverware. Everyone will feel pampered, and you’ll have less waste to dispose of.

Friend’s backyard Use only one of each cup/plate/flatware. Offer to help with cleanup and sorting of recyclables. Your hosts will appreciate it! Don’t forget to clean up all of the spent fireworks after a backyard fireworks display.
