A R JOHNSON HEALTH SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING MAGNET SCHOOL IS RECYCLING! WORDS:
Students in Steve Roach’s 8th grade science program have recycling as their STEM project. Students are learning about what can and cannot be recycled at home and at school, recycling and sustainability on a global level, and their role and impact in these areas. Students are responsible for the day-today recycling operation, and are also responsible for raising funds to purchase such items as recycling containers and supplies.
problems that are yet to be solved, and these students and others like them could be the people who solve them. Students will explore several ways in which they can “reduce, reuse, recycle” in their school. Some of these include replacing styrofoam trays with reusable plastic trays, composting, and reducing energy use. The pro-

ject is led by Mr. Roach and Judy Ward, who is an avid recycler. Although the project is the 8th grade STEM project, the entire school will participate and will benefit from their efforts.
Their efforts will have an immediate impact on the environment by reducing the amount of material that goes to our landfill and reducing recycling contamination. They will also have a long term impact through their efforts to identify specific projects that they can tackle which are related to their studies in engineering and medical sciences. Sustainable Living WORDS:
Monique Webb, Recycling Perks
The holiday season: a time for fun, family, and giving. There is a certain comforting, nostalgic air about it. With caroling, presents, and family around, what could be wrong? Well, for the environment, a lot. The end of the year is probably the hardest time for the planet, with increased paper usage, trees being cut down, the throwing out of old, now replaced, commercial goods, and the, albeit pretty, lights adorning everyone’s house, not to mention all the gas burned to transport all of the holiday cheer. Does it have to be this way? With your help we can minimize the damage the holiday season does to our Earth, and it will put some change in your pocket at the same time. The majority of damage done to the planet during the gift-giving season is a direct result of gift-giving. Annually in America, the wrapping of consumer products for the holidays is responsible for roughly half of all paper consumer products. In fact, wrapping paper and shopping bags are responsible for 4 million tons worth of trash annually, and 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold. This 10
number can be significantly reduced by using environmentally safe wrapping papers, such as those made from fibers like hemp. You can also reuse gift wrap from larger items for smaller items. Or, you can not use wrapping paper at all, and instead use newspapers, old maps, posters, and the like. Homemade cards are a cheap, environmentally friendly, and sentimental alternative to store-bought cards, and cards sent electronically produce no waste. In reference to the carbon footprint left during the holidays, you can cut down on the power used by limiting light displays or not putting them on at all. If you’re rather fond of lighting up your house to cheer up the neighbors, LED lights are an exceptional alternative to normal display lights. LEDs use 95% less power than standard bulbs which translates to less impact on the Earth and less impact on your wallet. However, even if you insist on using a large
amount of normal lights, you can at least agree that running them while asleep is pointless. Please turn off your holiday lights before going to bed. On the subject of decoration, trees are a popular household display during the most wonderful time of the year. Live trees are your best option. While some may argue that plastic trees are re-useable and do not require any live trees to be cut down, research shows that these are often discarded, reuse makes them less attractive, and due to their composition these artificial trees can take up to 1700 years to biodegrade. Live potted trees can last for around two to three years in a pot before they need to be transferred to a larger container, where it can last for several more years. If it is not possible for you to keep a tree in the house year-round, you should find a tree drop-off in your area, as Christmas trees are great for mulch and other woodchip products.
WHY RECYCLING ALUMINUM IS SO IMPORTANT
By Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
Aluminum is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly Unfortunately:
That is the equivalent of
4 x the aluminum needed to build our nation’s commercial air fleet.
More than
1 billion cans end up in landfills every year in the US alone.
Aluminum takes up to
At the current rate of use, aluminum will
200 years to degrade in a landfill................
On the bright side:
run dry by 2139.
Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to
power a TV for 3 hours. The average person has the opportunity to recycle more than
25,000 cans in a lifetime.
A recycled can is back on the shelf in just
60 days!

YARD WASTE REMOVAL GUIDELINES WORDS:
A
utumn is here ushering in the season of falling leaves! It also is a great time to trim bushes and trees. As you work in your yard this fall, you will accumulate mountains of leaves and limbs. It can be a huge task to get rid of those large piles, stacks, and rows of bags. Augusta Solid Waste has provided the below guidelines to help you remove the extra yard waste in a timely manner and with as little expense as possible. 1) PROPER SIZE Place 1 pile of yard waste measuring 10 cubic yards or less at the right of way in the front of your property; no item should be longer than 5 feet or too heavy. There is a weekly 10 cubic yard size limitation. Your regular weekly yard waste hauler is only allowed if there is 10 cubic yards or less. 2) CALCULATING CUBIC YARDS Take a measuring tape and measure the length, width, and height of your yard waste pile. Multiply the length, width, and height, and then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. 3) ALL OR NOTHING Everything placed at the right of way in front of your property is considered presented for removal. We do not remove parts of large yard waste piles over 10 cubic yards leaving some for the next week. We also do not take just 1 pile if there are several piles whose combined size is over 10 cubic yards. Your regular weekly yard waste provider will not remove any part or portion of the yard waste pile if it is over the weekly limit of 10 cubic yards. 4) OUT-OF-COMPLIANCE The following out-of-compliance yard waste will not be removed by your regular weekly yard waste hauler: - Pile size over 10 cubic yards - Any item over 5 feet in length or height - Any item too heavy to manhandle - Loose materials must be contained - Yard waste materials should be in 32 gal container or paper lawn bags; not in plastic bags - Yard waste mixed with garbage, recycle, bulk, or construction waste - Tires will not be collected
12
5) CONTAINING LOOSE MATERIAL Loose materials such as leaves, pine straw, twigs, branches, and vines should be contained in Kraft paper yard bags. You can also place loose materials in a personal 32 gallon container clearly marked “yard waste. Loose dirt or sod will not be collected.
Becky Padgett, Augusta Solid Waste
6) OUT-OF-COMPLIANCE NOTIFICATION If your yard waste is out-of-compliance, your regular weekly hauler will leave a hangtag on the pile. The hangtag will direct you to call 311 where you will be given the above-guidelines. Augusta Solid Waste will also send the property owner written notification of the out-of-compliance issue. 7) BRINGING YARD WASTE INTO COMPLIANCE You will have until your next weekly service day to correct your specific out-of-compliance issue. Need help? Call 311. 8) NEXT WEEKLY SERVICE DAY If your out-of-compliance issue has been corrected, your regular weekly yard waste provider will remove it with no additional charges incurred. If your out-of-compliance issue has not been corrected, Augusta Solid Waste will dispatch other equipment necessary to remove the out-of-compliance and the property owner will receive additional charges. 9) USE OF OTHER EQUIPMENT Augusta Solid Waste may dispatch a grapple truck, rear load truck, skid steer, backhoe, roll off truck, or other such equipment necessary to accommodate the removal of your out-of-compliance yard waste. 10) FEES FOR USE OF OTHER EQUIPMENT If Augusta Solid Waste uses other equipment to remove your of out-of-compliance yard waste, additional fees will be charged to the property owner. Additional fees may include $98.00 per hour for rear loader and/or grapple services, and $75.00 for skid steer/ backhoe. Most average out-of-compliance removal jobs take less than 1 hour.
If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at 311. We really appreciate all the hard work our Richmond County residences put into maintaining their homes and yards. Your efforts help to make our community safer and healthier, as well as one of the most beautiful places to live.
Happy Fall Augusta!
