“True green” St Patrick’s Day WORDS:

Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks

This year, as you wear green for St Patrick’s Day, don’t forget to also go really green!

I. Find a four-leaf clover! Go outside and take a hike! It could become your new St Patrick’s Day tradition.

II. Plant a tree Another idea for a new St Patrick’s Day tradition could be to plant a tree, which will support a critical resource that promotes clean air and water.

III. Buy green supplies for the party If you need party supplies, such as plates and cups, remember to look for recyclable or compostable ones. Also watch out for the SFI label, which means that the wood fiber used to make the product or packaging comes from responsibly managed forests. As always, don’t forget to bring reusable bags when shopping!

IV. Wear true green clothes

VII. Use green dye that is truly green

Not only the color should be green, the clothes could also be eco-friendly, which is great for the environment and made from high-quality ingredients that won’t irritate your skin. The trend is easy to start since even mass market brands have started to make their own organic and vegan clothing lines.

Dye your food and beverages green using eco-friendly, natural food coloring that you can make from spinach or sap. Store-bought food coloring and dyes often include chemicals that are harmful to you and the environment.

V. Get real accessories

green

Reuse to be green. Find your St Patrick’s Day accessories at thrift stores and other places where used goods are sold.

VI. Eat true green food Start by buying local and making sure you are eating foods that are in season. Trying to consume less meat to help reduce your carbon footprint on the environment is also a green way to be greener. Last but not least, you can recycle your food by turning it into compost for your garden.

VIII. Drink green Unfortunately, traditional hops drinks are made using harmful pesticides. Instead, you can try vegan options like Bulmers Pear Cider and Krombacher Pils or vegetarian options like Harp Irish Lager.

IX. Help kids be green for your city Encourage kids to give back to the city while making money for their school by participating in the Recycling Perks Give Back campaign. Contact us at info@recyclingperks.com to participate. Happy green St Patrick’s Day!!

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME INFOGRAPH: Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer. It begins at 2 am on March 12, 2017, and ends at 2 am on November 5, 2017.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

8 months: Daylight Saving Time (from March to November) 5 months: Standard Time

WHEN DID IT START?

The idea of Daylight Saving Time was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, but was first put in place during World War I.

DID YOU KNOW?

In the United States, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not follow Daylight Saving Time. The US territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and American Samoa also do not observe Daylight Saving Time. Some countries refer to "Daylight Saving Time" as "Summer Time." There are discussions about whether Daylight Saving Time still saves energy 10

or not nowadays, but most people still agree that it’s nice to have longer nights during the summer time.

LONGER NIGHTS

It allows daylight for an additional hour in the evening.

MORE OUTDOORS It gives people more time to enjoy the outdoors after work hours.

WHY A DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME?

LESS CRIME It decreases crime rate (7%) since crime happens mainly at night.

ENERGY It decreases the need for artificial light, heating, and cooling.

Why recycling isn’t enough & the 3 Rs WORDS:

Recycling has been around for quite some time now, and it has begun to catch on and in some cases gain momentum. This is a good thing, and one that is much needed; however, it only takes a little research to come to the conclusion that recycling alone will not solve our problems. Almost everyone has heard the adage “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, it is presented that way because they are actually in order from most to least impactful. While recycling aids in reducing the amount of recyclable waste that makes its way into landfills it does nothing to eliminate the use of nonrecyclable materials or their reuse. In actuality, reducing the waste we produce in general is by far the most impactful way to ensure that we start to make a turn for the better and save our depleting resources, with an overall goal of becoming a “zero waste” society.

14

we must personally reduce the amount that we consume while also shifting to consume only those products and services that are optimized to reduce waste. This calls for a change in engineering, design, and manufacturing methods and technologies, which will only occur if and when we start to demand them. Whenever possible, choose to buy goods that are not packaged at all, and only using the blue recycling bin as a last resort.

Transitioning to a zero waste society is not something any one person, organization, community, or country can do on its own. To truly achieve this goal,

We have also become a society that would rather replace something than attempt to or have it fixed. This has resulted in a diminishing number of skilled repair technicians and craftsmen, and more and more repairable items being tossed out. This is especially true for electronics, we have become more and more dependent on electronic devices in our everyday lives, and when they fail us we tend to get the latest and greatest to replace them. In many cases your devices can be repaired for a reasonable price if you are willing to

Reduce

Reuse

T. Hungate, Volunteer Author

do some research and shop around. So what can you do to help? Well, start by getting smart on what options are available to you. Know where and how to reduce the amount of waste you produce, search online for ways to creatively reuse items, and lastly, know what you can and cannot recycle. Once you are armed with this knowledge, you can start to identify the easy or quick changes you can make, such as having reusable grocery bags in all of your vehicles and purchasing a water filtration system. These are just a couple of quick and easy things that you can do that will greatly reduce waste. Resources are not in short supply!!!! The internet brings all you could ever want to know to your fingertips. Whether you choose to Google, use social media, or take online classes, the amount of information readily available is immeasurable.
