Bags are Bad for the Bin Since single-stream recycling went into service in Clearwater, residents find that recycling is easier than ever. Clearwater Solid Waste finds that the amount of recyclables collected has increased, in part because of how easy and convenient single-stream recycling is. While most everyone who recycles does their best to place accepted recyclables into the blue bins, sometimes plastic grocery bags, films and wraps sneak their way in. Wrapping and packaging for paper towels, toilet tissue, dry cleaning, newspaper delivery bags, etc., are not accepted in Clearwater’s single-stream recycling program. That is because the sorting equipment that is used to separate Clearwater’s recyclables cannot process plastic bags, film and wrap at the facility. When they’re placed in single-stream, they can get tangled in the equipment, sometimes leading to equipment failures. So what to do with your plastic bags, film and wraps? Take them to be recycled. According to plasticfilmrecycling.org, more than 18,000 retail locations across the country – such as grocery, department, and home improvement stores – provide collection bins for these plastics, usually near the main entrance. In Clearwater, you can take plastic bags to any Publix grocery store, Wal-Mart (1111 Missouri Ave. N.), Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market (1803 N. Highland Ave. and 2171 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd.), and more. When these plastics are properly recycled, they are turned into new products, such as backyard decking, fences, playground equipment, pipes and even new plastic bags. For more information on how to properly and safely dispose of these plastics, visit plasticfilmrecycling.org, or call Clearwater Solid Waste at (727) 562-4920.

Collect tin cans and clean them . Fill each can with water, and freeze over night until solid (the ice stabilizes the can and prevents it from bending when yo u punch holes). Grab a hammer and na ils, or a drill. You can either drill the holes in to the can without a pattern, or you can pr int a pattern onto a paper that you will tape to the can and use as a guide. Soda Bottles and Cans Fact or Fiction WORDS:
FICTION: Americans don’t recycle a lot of aluminum.
FICTION: Aluminum is a major part of our solid waste stream.
FACT: Americans recycle about 120,000 aluminum cans every minute – almost 535 billion since 1972 – enough to reach to the moon and back 85 times!
FACT: All of that aluminum only makes up about 1% of the total solid waste in the United States.
FICTION: We use over 1 billion aluminum soda cans each year.
FICTION: You need to recycle a lot of aluminum cans to save energy.
FICTION: Americans use about 1,000,000 plastic bottles each day.
FACT: Recycling just ONE aluminum can saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for more than 24 hours.
FACT: We use about 2,500,000 plastic bottles EVERY SINGLE HOUR in the United States.
FICTION: Plastic is the most recycled item in the United States.
FICTION: Plastic water bottles are heavier than they used to be.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE!
FACT: Aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled item in the U.S. More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.
FACT: A few years ago an empty half-liter water bottle weighed 22 grams. Now, it’s 8.5. (Soda bottles are heavier so they can withstand the carbonation.)
FACT: The number is actually 80 billion aluminum soda cans each year!

Suzie Vance, Recycling Perks
FICTION: You can only recycle aluminum or glass 50 times before it becomes unrecyclable. FACT: There’s no limit to how many times aluminum and glass can be recycled.
Recycle all of your soda bottles and cans. If you’re not home, and don’t have access to a recycling container, take your soda packaging with you to place them in your recycling container at home.
Please place soda bottles and cans in your curbside recycling container!

RickDaddy’s Eatin’ Fresh RickDaddy’s Eatin’ Fresh is a hidden gem that offers big, bold flavor. Tucked away on Lakeview Road by the railroad tracks, this little lunch spot offers fresh hand-pressed Cuban Sandwiches, Fish Tacos, Smoked Fish Spread, and more! All of the sauces come from RickDaddy’s own recipes, and use the freshest, finest all natural ingredients. The seafood is always fresh and prepared to order.
RickDaddy’s originally started as a hot sauce company, and then transitioned to a food truck that traveled to local markets and events, taking their awesome creations with them. RickDaddy’s eventually settled on Clearwater as a location for their cafe. Clearwater quickly embraced the café ranking them #1 Cuban sandwich since 2015 and winner of the seafood category for the Clearwater Best Business Award Program for 2016.
Stop in and say hello! Rick is as bold and lively as the food he prepares, always greeting everyone with a smile. As he says, he loves “Eatin’ Fresh, Eatin’ Healthy, and Livin’ Good!”

Blue recycling container: Residents are able to recycle many new items to further reduce the waste going into the landfill. Please make sure all items are empty.
“BLACK BARREL” GARBAGE CONTAINER Place garbage other than yard waste in container; close lid; be sure nothing hangs down sides of barrel. Yard waste is recycled. Bag or box uncontaminated leaves and grass clippings; cut tree limbs and brush into four foot lengths and bundle. Place at curb, not in your black barrel or blue barrel. Place container at curb no earlier than 7:00 p.m. on the night prior to collection day, and no later than 7:00 a.m. that morning. Remove container from curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day following collection. Place container within two feet of the curb with handle facing away from curb. Do not place container within three feet of your recycling bin or other obstructions, i.e., mailboxes, parked cars, trees and guidewires. It is your responsibility to keep your container clean. Wash it periodically with a hose and mild soap. Drain and wrap wet garbage prior to placing in your container. Bag lightweight material (Styrofoam “peanuts,” and shredded paper, etc.) Do not place the following items in your container: hot ashes, yard waste, concrete, electronics, dirt, sod, sand, plaster, carpeting, lumber, plasterboard, tile, bricks, roofing shingles or any other construction, remodeling or demolition debris. It is illegal to dispose of the following materials in your container: tires, auto batteries, pool chemicals, toxic or flammable items or liquid paint. Paint cans will get crushed and leak onto your streets. Leave lids off latex paint cans to allow the paint to dry out, or saturate with newspaper, then place in container. Oil-based paint, other chemicals, and electronics must be disposed of at the County’s Household Electronics & Chemical Collection Center, or at scheduled mobile chemical collection events. Call (727) 464-7500 for information. 14
* The solid waste truck is on a scheduled route, and cannot return if container is not put out as described above.
