NORFOLK WINS NATIONAL “KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL” AFFILIATE AWARD WORDS: Kevin Du Bois, Kevin Du Bois, Recycling Coordinator, City of Norfolk

Keep Norfolk Beautiful (KNB) received the 2015 President Circle Award recognition at Keep America Beautiful’s (KAB) recent National Conference in Florida. The President’s Circle Award recognizes exemplary performance made by certified affiliates in creating clean, green and beautiful communities. In qualifying for a President’s Circle Award, Keep Norfolk Beautiful met KAB’s standards of merit by conducting an annual Community Appearance Index, calculating the affiliate’s cost/benefit ratio, and administering activities in the areas of litter prevention, recycling and waste reduction, and beautification and community greening. Not only did KNB meet the President’s Circle Award criteria, but it was judged to be best in the nation within its population category for creating a more beautiful, cleaner, and improved environment through new technologies, improved waste handling, and public space stewardship.

KNB collaborated with Recy“cling Perks to improve household recycling efforts ” A few of the recycling highlights that contributed to KNB’s awardwinning recognition include: • KNB collaborated with Recycling Perks to improve household recycling efforts, reduce waste, and promote local businesses by offering great savings and exclusive deals that reward recy-

clers. In FY15, Recycling Perks added 1,856 new “Perksters” to the program (up 25%) for a total of 9,386, collectively they earned 296,420 points and redeemed them at participating businesses for a value of $46,162, • KNB supported the City’s Curbside Recycling program, resulting in an average curbside recycling rate of 62% (up 5% since FY13) and 76.3% who put out their recycling at least once per month. • Norfolk diverted 10,884 curbside tons of material and 455 drop-off tons of recyclables and converted the remaining 61,460 tons of waste to energy,

KNB organized two annual ““Recycle Norfolk Days” in partnership with the Division of Waste Management ” • KNB organized two annual “Recycle Norfolk Days” in partnership with the Division of Waste Management. The program supported Goodwill (clothes) and the Up Center (books), diverting 48,468 pounds of material from the waste stream, • In FY14, the Norfolk Environmental Commission’s Plastic Bag Task Force and KNB worked with five elementary schools and engaged 2,514 students to collect and recycle 1,628 lbs. of plastic bags (~130,240 bags) through the Trex Challenge program! In FY15, the rate of school participation more than tripled to 17 schools. Making the connection between plastic bags as a common source of marine debris and its ef-

fect on the health and survivorship of marine wildlife, the schools engaged nearly 6,000 students and collected over 280,000 bags (over 3,500 pounds), • KNB works cooperatively with Norfolk’s Division of Waste Management to collect and store oyster shells to be used for oyster restoration. In FY15, KNB facilitated the collection of 110 bushels of oyster shell that was diverted from the waste stream and donated to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for their use in regional oyster restoration projects. “Working with our partners in the Waste and Storm Water Management Divisions of Public Works, with the Norfolk Environmental Commission, and the Friends of Norfolk’s Environment, we have able to do great things” said Kevin Du Bois, Recycling Coordinator for the City of Norfolk. “These awards from KAB recognize those outstanding collective efforts and Norfolk’s prominence as an amazing urban waterfront community” Keep America Beautiful’s National Conference, its premier educational and networking event, brought together more than 350 leaders from Keep America Beautiful’s national network of more than 600 state and community-based affiliates, business leaders, policymakers and other experts who shared innovative ideas and proven strategies to help end littering, improve recycling, and beautify America’s communities.

The landfill truth WORDS: Monique Webb, Recycling Perks

People often wonder why recycling is such a big deal to gung-ho recyclers. Well, let me be the first to tell give you the landfilled truth about your so-called ‘trash.’ Garbage, as most people like to call it, takes time to break down and some of course, longer than others. This means that the big pile of trash that we generate, or the Landfill as most people know it, will continue to grow until some of the garbage in the bottom of the pile disintegrates making space for more trash to be piled on top. This means that we are wasting valuable land resources to house the one thing we put out to the curb on a regular basis, our trash. That pile continues to grow on a daily basis when it could be greatly reduced in size if more people simply reduced, reused and recycled. Take a closer look at your (recyclable and reusable) garbage. You might be surprised to know just how long those items you called trash will last in its Landfill home. There are many ways to reduce your consumption of packaged materials, recycle almost all of your household items and reuse items in creative ways in order to reduce the amount of waste you generate. Why don’t you donate your shoes and clothing to someone in need, use your scrap plywood to make a birdhouse, or the old fishing line to make a recycled win chime? Maybe because you never thought of ways to reuse trash, but there are loads of resources online that can help you turn that around. Check out sites like www.Instructables.com or even www.Pinterest.com for ideas and inspiration on reducing, reusing and recycling everything in your home.

The Space Above Yoga Center For almost ten years now, The Space Above has been the holistic yoga center on W 22nd in Norfolk. “It all started with the idea of offering yoga and massage in one same space” explains Kim Austin-Peterman, owner of The Space Above. The large team has several massage therapists, and yoga instructors, as well as a bio-energy facilitator, and an “ayurvedic” practitioner. With offerings from Hatha Yoga to the Yoga Wall, The Space Above has something for everybody. There are many possibilities for someone to find an activity adapted to their level or preferences. For example, if you are pregnant or have just had a baby, they offer prenatal or Infant Yoga classes. If it’s a deep stretch

you need, The Space Above also offers a yoga wall where ropes are attached to assist in the various yoga “asana” (meaning “poses”). You may simply wish to receive one of their relaxing massages, or a healing treatment. There are also numerous other possibilities such as Nasya, the administration of herbal oils, neck massage, and herbal steam to help with nasal congestion, sinusitis, rhinitis, allergies or headaches. Are you familiar with the “Pancha Karma” Treatment? It’s an ancient detoxification, cleansing, rejuvenation, and relaxation treatment performed over 3-7 days. Each day you will receive an hour and a half massage with warm herbal oil for your specific constitution, herbal steam, and a

hot, moist lavender towel rub down. Being that the first yogic principle is “ahimsa” or “non-violence in thought, word or deed to anyone or anything including oneself”, The Space Above embraces non-violence to mother earth and to each other by recycling, composting and using recycled and earth-friendly products as much as possible thereby taking our practice beyond the yoga mat. Why you should not put your plastic bags in your blue bin WORDS:

T. Hungate, Volunteer Author

You may have heard that plastic bags are not supposed to go in your curbside recycling bin, but do you know why? There are a few reasons actually, and they may surprise you. Reason 1 – Most recycling centers’ first stage of sorting is done by hand, by hard working individuals at your local recycling station. They sort through tons of material an hour, and lose precious time if they have to untie or open a plastic bag. The workers cannot tell what is inside of a closed bag. It could be full of 100% recyclable material or it could be full of things like dirty diapers or food scraps and other contaminants. This also makes it unsafe for recycling center workers to open the bags, and in most cases they end up being thrown in the trash! Reason 2 – Plastic bags that do make it past the first sorting stage can interfere with the automatic sorting machines which use conveyor belts, rotating tunnels, spinning wheels, and magnets to sort items. Plastic bags can easily get caught in the belts and wheels causing them to jam. Your little plastic bag could bring an entire recycling sorting station to a dead stop. It could take workers hours to find the plastic culprit and remove it, thereby greatly reducing the efficiency of the recycling station. What should you do with your plastic bags if you can’t put them in the bin? There is good news for plastic bags when it comes to recycling. Over 18,000 retail store locations have added plastic bag recycling to their list of services offered. You may have even noticed these bins at the entrance to some of your favorite grocery stores or home improvement stores. The bins are typically labeled, easy to see and easy to use. Use this tool to find exact locations to dispose of your plastic bags, by zip code: http://www.plasticfilmrecycling.org. You are also welcome to bring your bags to the Norfolk Recycling events which happen twice a year at Waste Management, 1176 Pineridge Road, in the months of November and April. In addition, several Norfolk Public Schools are participating in the Trex program, which rewards the school that collects the most plastic each year; so ask your local elementary student! Discover the Trex Challenge here: http://www.trex.com/inspiration/blog/detail/?id=50 7

Tin Can Luminaries MATERIALS: - Empty steel cans, cleaned and labels removed - Water - Sand - Nail - Hammer

Place the cans in the freezer until the water is frozen solid. 2. Create stencils of your designs for your cans on scrap paper. 3. Once your cans of sand and water are frozen, remove them from the freezer and tape your stencil design onto the can. 4. Using a nail and hammer, gently punch out the design from your stencil. 5. Allow the ice in the can to melt so that you can dispose of water (keep your sand to reuse it later). Then dry the cans completely. 6. 4 tips to encourage

others to recycle

WORDS: Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks

Mayday, mayday!! Our beautiful planet needs our attention. The world population is growing, and its waste along with it. There is only so much space to deposit our waste, and it takes many human lifetimes for some of the materials to decompose. Some of these materials will soon disappear due to intensive exploitation by mankind. Aluminum, at the current rate of use, is set to disappear by 2139. Even earlier, in 2021, silver will be completely exploited – so recycling will be the only way to maintain silver on our Earth! We need to encourage others to recycle! Try these 4 main tips: 1. Educate people about the importance of recycling. Many simply don’t know what it is about, or what it does; they consider the recycling bin as a second trash can. 2. Open people’s eyes and minds. Get the word out through your social groups, both online and off. Share the facts, numbers, and videos like the plastic bags in the oceans, etc. You can find lots of information on www.facebook.com/recyclingperks. 3. Consider having a recycling presentation at your neighborhood’s association meeting. Recycling Perks provides this as a free service. Or, you can present the facts yourself. 4. Rather than just telling people, you can also show them by taking them on a recycling plant tour. Your hauler, TFC Recycling, offers tours here: http://www.tfcrecycling.com/our-services/request-tour-our-facilities
