NEW! TFC NOW RECYCLING CARTONS! WORDS:
Your hauler, TFC Recycling, is excited to announce that effective November 1, 2016, TFC will be accepting, processing, and recycling food and beverage cartons collected from curbside recycling customers throughout Hampton Roads. Food and beverage cartons are also known as gable top refrigerated cartons and shelf-stable cartons. Examples include dairy milk cartons, almond milk cartons, juice cartons, and various types of soup containers. Food and beverage cartons are recovered using optical sortation and are recycled through a process called hydrapulating. This process separates the layers of the food and beverage cartons and allows for the highquality pulp to be recovered and used to make other products such as cardboard boxes, facial tissues, and
Paul J. Stacharczyk, SVP and Chief Operating Officer, TFC Recycling
paper towels. In some cases, other parts of the food and beverage cartons, such as the aluminum foil or residual polyethylene, can be made into outdoor construction products. TFC will be the first recycling facility in the mid-Atlantic region to recycle food and beverage cartons. TFC has invested nearly $600,000 in facility upgrades to accommodate this expansion of the materials accepted for recycling. As always, TFC is committed to environmental stewardship and strives through innovation to be the regional leader in recycling.

The first 150 residents to bring milk or juice cartons to be recycled will receive a free reusable tote!

Recycling On the Go is expanding in Norfolk! Both the Chelsea and Ghent Business districts have added recycling containers on the curb for use by pedestrians. In total, 13 new dual trash and recycling containers have been placed in these busy areas to support the City’s goal of achieving greater environmental sustainability by diverting more waste and increasing citizen participation. The City’s On the GO movement started in 2013 when the Department
of Public Works, in partnership with the Downtown Norfolk Council (DNC), Downtown Civic League, and the City’s recycling contractor, TFC Recycling (TFC), began the new services including 22 recycling and trash collection stations in the rightof-way. The expansion has sent the message that Norfolk residents and businesses recycle at home, work and on-the-go. Pedestrians have received the new recycling services well and there has been frequent use of the recycling stations.

Sustainable Living WORDS:
Monique Webb, Recycling Perks
The holiday season: a time for fun, family, and giving. There is a certain comforting, nostalgic air about it. With caroling, presents, and family around, what could be wrong? Well, for the environment, a lot. The end of the year is probably the hardest time for the planet; with increased paper usage, trees being cut down, the throwing out of old, now replaced, commercial goods, and the albeit pretty lights adorning everyone’s house. Not to mention all the gas burned to transport all of the holiday cheer. Does it have to be this way? With your help we can minimize the damage the holiday season does to our Earth, and it will put some change in your pocket at the same time. The majority of damage done to the planet during the giftgiving season is a direct result of gift-giving. Annually in America, the wrapping of consumer products for the holidays is responsible for roughly half of all paper consumer products. In fact, wrapping paper and shopping bags are responsible for 4 million tons of trash annually, and 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold. This 10
number can be significantly reduced by using environmentally safe wrapping papers, such as those made from fibers like hemp. You can also reuse gift wrap from larger items for smaller items. Or, you can not use wrapping paper at all. Instead use newspapers, old maps, posters, and the like. Homemade cards are a cheap, environmentally friendly, and sentimental alternative to store-bought cards, and cards sent electronically produce no waste. In reference to the carbon footprint left during the holidays, you can cut down on the power used by limiting light displays or not putting them on at all. If you’re rather fond of lighting up your house to cheer up the neighbors, LED lights are an exceptional alternative to normal display lights. LEDs use 95% less power than standard bulbs which translates to less impact on the Earth and less impact on your wallet. However, even if you insist on using a large
amount of normal lights, you can at least agree that running them while asleep is pointless. Please turn off your holiday lights before going to bed. On the subject of decoration: trees are a popular household display during the most wonderful time of the year. Live trees are your best option. While some may argue that plastic trees are re-useable and do not require any live trees to be cut down, research shows that these are often discarded. Reuse makes them less attractive, and due to their composition, these artificial trees can take up to 1700 years to biodegrade. Live potted trees can last for around two to three years in a pot before they need to be transferred to a larger container, where it can last for several more years. If it is not possible for you to keep a tree in the house year-round, you should find a tree drop-off in your area, as Christmas trees are great for mulch and other woodchip products.
WHY RECYCLING ALUMINUM IS SO IMPORTANT
By Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
Aluminum is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly Unfortunately:
That is the equivalent of
4 x the aluminum needed to build our nation’s commercial air fleet.
More than
1 billion cans end up in landfills every year in the US alone.
Aluminum takes up to
At the current rate of use, aluminum will
200 years to degrade in a landfill................
On the bright side:
run dry by 2139.
Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to
power a TV for 3 hours. The average person has the opportunity to recycle more than
25,000 cans in a lifetime.
A recycled can is back on the shelf in just
60 days!

Pendulum Fine Meats Pendulum Fine Meats is a food lover’s paradise. They combine the feel of a good, oldfashioned butcher shop with a consciousness that drives them to seek out the best, most ethically sourcable products. In addition to their delectable, grass or grain fed meats, they carry cheese, eggs, butter, breads and spreads, as well as beer and wine to complement their products and complete your meal proper. Pendulum Meats are sourcing ethically raised meats and helping local farmers find consumers that want well-raised healthy products. Revolutionizing Recycling
An Article focused on the positive effects of recycling WORDS:
Monique Webb, Recycling Perks
It’s time to get everyone on the same page in terms of recycling so we can begin to revolutionize the way we think about our natural resources. Choosing to recycle items helps to divert waste from the landfill and increases the amount of raw materials that would otherwise need to be harvested for the creation of new items. Recycling at home is easy enough and allows each individual to contribute to the quality of life for current and future generations. It’s so good for the planet that we actually save energy, time, and yes, even money, when we recycle. We save time and energy when we recycle by eliminating the need to extract raw materials to be transported, refined, and then processed into consumer materials. Manufacturers can save money by purchasing recycled materials instead of manufacturing from raw, unrefined materials. Aluminum is a great example of recycling savings. Did you know that in the time it takes to make one aluminum can from raw materials, you can recreate almost 20 recycled cans? Not only does the aluminum recycling process create more cans faster, the entire process from curbside recycling pickup to store shelf takes just about 60 days. That’s amazing considering it takes up to 200 years for that same aluminum can to break down in the landfill. Glass is another great recycled item. Since it can take more than a million years for glass to breakdown naturally, it is one of the best things to reuse or recycle. Recycling glass instead of making virgin glass results in 20% less air pollution and an amazing 50% less water pollution during the manufacturing process. Resources like sand and limestone which are used to create glass can be saved, and we can continue to recycle that same glass bottle for the next million years. Now that’s a great savings!
