CITY SPOTLIGHT WORDS: Alacia Wever, City of Norfolk
Keeping our Parks Clean this Summer!
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoor weather at local beaches and parks in the area. In fact, there are over 70 community and neighborhood parks throughout the City of Norfolk for residents and visitors to enjoy. In addition, Norfolk has bikeways, trails, boat ramps and even a skate park for use throughout the city. Parks are necessary for our community because they provide a place to gather, meet others, and enjoy recreational activities. When there is trash and litter in our parks however, it reduces these benefits and makes it difficult for others to enjoy. Whether you’re gearing up to take a swim at a nearby beach or planning your next big cookout at a local park, keep these tips in mind to keep our parks clean this summer! 1. Pack It In, Pack It Out: Ensure no litter is left behind. The next time you’re headed to a local park or outdoor adventure, be sure to take any excess trash back home with you. This helps to reduce litter at the source. In addition, this promotes the idea of leaving no trace. We want to leave our public spaces as clean as possible for others to enjoy. 2. Recycle plastic bottles, glass bottles, and beverage cans: Every year the Ocean Conservancy has identified plastic bottles, glass bottles, and beverage cans are in the “TOP 10” most littered items in the world. Each of these items are valuable recyclables which could be turned into something else. Recycled plastic bottles, for example, can be turned into patio furniture, benches, and other materials. 3. Go for the reusable option: When packing for that next picnic this summer, remember to take reusable containers, plates, utensils, and bottles. This reduces the amount of possible waste which could litter our parks and community areas. For example, if Styrofoam plates become litter, they will most likely land in our waterways and could take hundreds of years to breakdown. 4. Be the example: Recycling can be contagious! When preparing for your summer adventure, keep in mind how you will be the example in your community. For your summer park visit, come equipped with a reusable bag, reusable containers, and separate your recyclable items for your blue recycle bin at home. In order to continue to enjoy the benefits of our park, it is our job to keep our parks clean. If we are going to keep our community clean we must work together to increase recycling and reduce waste. If everyone does their part, it makes it easy to have a clean park! 3

Norfolk Recycles Day, a Long Tradition of Waste Diversion Although it has had various names, Norfolk Recycles Day has been around for many years to serve citizens as a way to divert waste from simply becoming trash. Back in the 1980’s the Clean Community Commission of Norfolk held aluminum collections so soda cans and the like could have a new life. In the early 2000s, collection events were held in central locations and focused on electronics. These days and for Norfolk especially, collections cover nearly all items in the household. during the past three years, the event has been held in both fall and spring as a drive up style event. Citizens arrive with everything from documents to be shredded, house décor, clothing, small kitchen appliances, books, furniture and electronics. Norfolk Recycles Day is held at the Division of Waste Management where Household Hazardous Waste is handled on site. This enables citizens to transport batteries, small CFLs, paint and chemicals for proper disposal. These items cannot go in the trash can and it is best to get them properly disposed of before hurricane season in June. An addition to the spring time event is a collection drive for the Foodbank. While spring cleaning, citizens can help out those less fortunate by grabbing a few non-perishables from the cupboard and bringing them along to Norfolk Recycles Day. We all think of the Foodbank during the holidays but perhaps not as much during spring. Those who do will receive a usable shopping tote. Take a look at page 14 for more information.
Norfolk Recycles Day Saturday May 6th 9 am – 2 pm at 1176 Pineridge Road 5
Let’s take the confusion out of recycling! Soda Bottles and Cans Fact or Fiction WORDS:
FICTION: Americans don’t recycle a lot of aluminum.
FICTION: Aluminum is a major part of our solid waste stream.
FACT: Americans recycle about 120,000 aluminum cans every minute – almost 535 billion since 1972 – enough to reach to the moon and back 85 times!
FACT: All of that aluminum only makes up about 1% of the total solid waste in the United States.
FACT: There’s no limit to how many times aluminum and glass can be recycled.
FICTION: We use over 1 billion aluminum soda cans each year.
FICTION: You need to recycle a lot of aluminum cans to save energy.
FICTION: Americans use about 1,000,000 plastic bottles each day.
FACT: Recycling just ONE aluminum can saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for more than 24 hours.
FACT: We use about 2,500,000 plastic bottles EVERY SINGLE HOUR in the United States.
FICTION: Plastic is the most recycled item in the United States.
FICTION: Plastic water bottles are heavier than they used to be.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE!
FACT: Aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled item in the U.S. More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.
FACT: A few years ago an empty half-liter water bottle weighed 22 grams. Now, it’s 8.5. (Soda bottles are heavier so they can withstand the carbonation.)
FACT: The number is actually 80 billion aluminum soda cans each year!

Suzie Vance, Recycling Perks
FICTION: You can only recycle aluminum or glass 50 times before it becomes unrecyclable.
Recycle all of your soda bottles and cans. If you’re not home, and don’t have access to a recycling container, take your soda packaging with you to place them in your recycling container at home.
Please place soda bottles and cans in your curbside recycling container!
