Shannon Freeman, Recycling Perks and the Valentine Museum
The Valentine THE VALENTINE is at 1015 E. Clay St. in the Court End district. The museum’s founder, Mann S. Valentine Jr., bequeathed his personal collection of art and artifacts to the city in 1892, along with ownership of the 1812 Wickham House. With its focus on the history of Richmond and the people who shaped it, the history center offers changing exhibits, tours and a research library. Displays include decorative and industrial arts, paintings, prints, manuscripts and books. Complementing these artifacts are more than half a million photographs of the city and the surrounding area. The museum also features a dynam-
ic new permanent exhibition documenting the city’s history entitled “This is Richmond, Virginia.” The 1812 Wickham House was built by John and Elizabeth Wickham, one of Richmond’s wealthiest couples, in 1812. Guided tours of the house address the lives of numerous residents, black and white, including the Wickhams’ many children and enslaved servants. The elegant house, with its magnificent freestanding stairway, rare neoclassical wall paintings and carved ornamentation, typifies late Federal architecture.
Did you know that they are proponents of recycling the community? The Valentine has recycling bins in their garden and around the campus. They recycle paper, bottles, cans, and other recyclables through VCU’s Recycling program. They also have partnered with Compost RVA to compost at many of our special events. They are also a Reward Partner with Richmond’s Recycling Perks program. The Valentine offer rewards for discounted admission tickets to the museum and for one of their tours. 5

Sustainable Living WORDS:
Monique Webb, Recycling Perks
The holiday season, a time for fun, family, and giving. There is a certain comforting, nostalgic air about it. With caroling, presents, and family around, what could be wrong? Well, for the environment, a lot. The end of the year is probably the hardest time for the planet, with increased paper usage, trees being cut down, the throwing out of old, now replaced, commercial goods, and the, albeit pretty, lights adorning everyone’s house, not to mention all the gas burned to transport all of the holiday cheer. Does it have to be this way? With your help we can minimize the damage the holiday season does to our Earth, and it will put some change in your pocket at the same time.
10
The majority of damage done to the planet during the gift-giving season is a direct result of gift-giving. Annually in America, the wrapping of consumer products for the holidays is responsible for roughly half of all paper consumer products. In fact, wrapping paper and shopping bags are responsible for 4 million tons worth of trash, annually, and 2.65 billion holiday cards are sold. This number
can be significantly reduced by using environmentally safe wrapping papers, such as those made from fibers like hemp. You can also reuse gift wrap from larger items for smaller items. Or, you can not use wrapping paper at all, and instead use newspapers, old maps, posters, and the like. Homemade cards are a cheap, environmentally friendly, and sentimental alternative to store-bought cards, and cards sent electronically produce no waste. In reference to the carbon footprint left during the holidays, you can cut down on the power used by limiting light displays or not putting them on at all. If you’re rather fond of lighting up your house to cheer up the neighbors, LED lights are an exceptional alternative to normal display lights. LEDs use 95% less power than standard bulbs which translates to less impact on the Earth and less impact on your wallet. However, even if you insist on using a large amount of normal
lights, you can at least agree that running them while asleep is pointless. Please turn off your holiday lights before going to bed. On the subject of decoration, trees are a popular household display during the most wonderful time of the year. Live trees are your best option. While some may argue that plastic trees are re-useable and do not require any live trees to be cut down, research shows that these are often discarded, reuse makes them less attractive, and due to their composition these artificial trees can take up to 1700 years to biodegrade. Live potted trees can last for around two to three years in a pot before they need to be transferred to a larger container, where it can last for several more years. If it is not possible for you to keep a tree in the house year-round, you should find a tree drop-off in your area, as Christmas trees are great for mulch and other woodchip products.
WHY RECYCLING ALUMINUM IS SO IMPORTANT
By Sandra Hungate, Recycling Perks
Aluminum is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly Unfortunately:
That is the equivalent of
4 x the aluminum needed to build our nation’s commercial air fleet.
More than
1 billion cans end up in landfills every year in the US alone.
Aluminum takes up to
At the current rate of use, aluminum will
200 years to degrade in a landfill................
On the bright side:
run dry by 2139.
Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to
power a TV for 3 hours. The average person has the opportunity to recycle more than
25,000 cans in a lifetime.
A recycled can is back on the shelf in just
60 days!

Revolutionizing Recycling
An Article focused on the positive effects of recycling WORDS:
Monique Webb, Recycling Perks
It’s time to get everyone on the same page in terms of recycling so we can begin to revolutionize the way we think about our natural resources. Choosing to recycle items helps to divert waste from the landfill and increases the amount of raw materials that would otherwise need to be harvested for the creation of new items. Recycling at home is easy enough and allows each individual to contribute to the quality of life for current and future generations. It’s so good for the planet that we actually save energy, time, and yes, even money, when we recycle. We save time and energy when we recycle by eliminating the need to extract raw materials to be transported, refined, and then processed into consumer materials. Manufacturers can save money by purchasing recycled materials instead of manufacturing from raw, unrefined materials. Aluminum is a great example of recycling savings. Did you know that in the time it takes to make one aluminum can from raw materials, you can recreate almost 20 recycled cans? Not only does the aluminum recycling process create more cans faster, the entire process from curbside recycling pickup to store shelf takes just about 60 days. That’s amazing considering it takes up to 200 years for that same aluminum can to break down in the landfill. Glass is another great recycled item. Since it can take more than a million years for glass to breakdown naturally, it is one of the best things to reuse or recycle. Recycling glass instead of making virgin glass results in 20% less air pollution and an amazing 50% less water pollution during the manufacturing process. Resources like sand and limestone which are used to create glass can be saved, and we can continue to recycle that same glass bottle for the next million years. Now that’s a great savings!
