Inside story

DECLAN WHITEFORD

Director at Pramerica, supporting Prudential Financial’s Model Risk Management Group within the ERM organisation.

Where are you based?

Letterkenny, Ireland.

What volunteer role(s) do you do for the IFoA?

I’m in the Data Science Collaboration MIG. I also took part in the IFoA’s Data Science Certifi cate pilot programme, and support the exam assessment team.

How long have you been volunteering?

I started volunteering in 2018, as a ‘Guinea Pig’ within the exam setting process.

What’s involved in your role(s)?

As part of the Data Science pilot programme, I took the course and provided feedback on which aspects I found useful and which could be refi ned. The Data Science MIG’s goal is to promote knowledge of data science among actuaries.

What motivates you to volunteer for the IFoA?

Pushing myself to learn from others.

What have you/do you hope to achieve in your volunteer role?

I would like to help shape how the IFoA drives adoption of data science.

What new skills or knowledge do you think you have developed?

I now have a greater appreciation for how the likes of computer vision and natural language processing could be applied in an actuarial context. The MIG has granted me opportunities to improve my public speaking skills.

Has this assisted your lifelong learning?

It has been a great way for me to broaden

“It has been a great way for me to broaden my horizons”

my horizons, as well as learn from others.

Do you think volunteering has helped you in your day job?

I have benefi tted from the resources that the IFoA has to off er, both from a technical and a professional perspective.

Have there been any memorable moments?

I had the opportunity to speak at the IFoA’s inaugural The Actuary as a Data Scientist event. It was fascinating to see how other actuaries were leveraging data science techniques, and it encouraged me to volunteer for the Data Science Certifi cate pilot.

How do you balance your day job and your volunteer role?

My employer is supportive in allowing me to put time aside. That said, the volunteering roles are really fl exible.

How do you relax away from the offi ce?

The lockdown has encouraged me to buy a bike, so I’ve been taking advantage of the scenic north coast of Ireland.

What would you say to others considering a volunteer role?

You will be really surprised at how getting involved in one thing can open doors!

Who is your role model – in life or in business?

I listen to a lot of sport podcasts and try to think how some of those experiences could positively infl uence my life.

What was your earliest dream job?

Sports journalist.

What word best describes you?

Dedicated.

Do you prefer a staycation or holiday abroad?

I’ve always preferred a holiday abroad – a recent trip to Croatia was a highlight! But I suspect we will now start to have a greater appreciation for staycations.

If you were locked in a famous building for one night...which would it be and why?

Currently I would be happy to go to any restaurant or pub – famous or otherwise.

What would you consider to be the most brilliant moment of your career to date?

In 2013 I won a scholarship from the Ireland-US Council – that moment kick-started my career with Pramerica and Prudential Financial.
