Helping to drive change Alexandre de Juniac, Director General and CEO, IATA Aviation is the business of freedom, and that business spans a tremendous range of innovative companies and organizations that are committed to enhancing air connectivity and giving passengers the freedom to explore, trade, study, and meet loved ones around the world. The IATA Strategic Partnerships (SP) program is a platform for industry collaboration that brings together many of these businesses. This Strategic Partner Special has been produced to profile those organizations that see the value in working with IATA and its members to help drive industry change. For 27 years, the SP community has

worked alongside the IATA membership to address aviation’s most pressing issues. IATA’s Strategic Partners have played key roles in vital industry programs such as New Distribution Capability and Fast Travel. These transformational projects can be achieved only if the aviation value chain is aligned. I extend my thanks to the 686 Strategic Partners for contributing so much to our industry. If you are not yet a Strategic Partner, I invite you to join us. The thought leadership provided by our partners is an essential part of our work for a stronger aviation industry.

5

A knowledgeable partner George Khairallah, President, JR Technologies Change in the airline industry is a constant, and it comes with risks. Nationalist sentiment is growing; government intervention and taxation are increasing; and cyber and physical security threats are becoming more complex. An airline has to adapt its product strategies to aging populations in certain markets and to millennials in others; to markets in fast growing economies versus slow growing economies; and to technologically advanced payment solutions in certain countries versus payment solutions in cash economies. The speed at which an airline can adapt its product offer to such changes is critical.

Betting your product development agility and speed to market on community models is a recipe that has proven inadequate. Those competitors that are not tied to legacy distribution tactics are growing faster and are more profitable. Demand for air travel is increasing. Exploitation of this opportunity lies in the ability to acquire and organize the resources, technology, and competencies to rapidly address the needs of new markets, or counter a competitor’s strategy. By partnering with JR Technologies you will have access to know-how, technology, and experience to help you succeed.

n 1990, IATA (the International Air Transport Association), the trade association for the world’s airlines, and nine founding members came together to create the Strategic Partnerships (SP) program. Focused on a few strategic areas, its aims were to pool resources and expertise, support IATA and its initiatives, and assist in the development, implementation and promotion of industry standards. As the aviation sector has grown and developed over the years, and with IATA today representing 265 airlines, equating to 83% of total air traffic, so too has the size, scope and ambition of SP. With more than 600 partners worldwide, SP has developed into a global community, sharing ideas and collaborating to improve aviation practices and technology, and playing a vital role forging a safer, more profitable and sustainable industry. More than a quarter of a century ago, there was little formal dialogue between the airline industry and its service providers in setting standards across the sector. The creation of SP was recognition of the role that suppliers, with their vast reservoir of technical knowledge and expertise, could play in this vital aspect of the

industry. Today’s IATA SP remains true to this founding principle. This forward-thinking program focuses on more than 40 areas of involvement, encompassing a comprehensive range of industry activities. Members contribute to the work of more than 100 work groups and task forces. This collaborative approach has greatly enhanced the quality of IATA standards over the years. Initiatives developed as a result of SP have delivered numerous operational efficiencies and safety enhancements for airlines. Strategic Partners have also benefited from their involvement in the program. By participating in workgroup and task force discussions, they have found that this forum has resulted in a win-win solution for all stakeholders. While SP has a proud history, with aviation constantly evolving and facing many challenges, the need for IATA and its Strategic Partners to continue to work together to forge a stronger future for the industry is greater than ever. The IATA SP program is your opportunity to bring your experience, expertise and insight to bear in shaping the future of the air transportation sector. The program allows you to contribute to

Rich pickings in big data Airlines have much to gain by analyzing the wealth of data they can find both within their own businesses and in their supply chains 10

A

irlines are sitting on a goldmine of big data that has the potential to transform the aviation sector. But it’s not only the data they hold about their own aircraft and passengers that holds the key to this new world, but also the even greater data riches within their supply chains. The amount of data held by companies supplying airlines is huge and multifarious. On the engineering and maintenance side, for example, it ranges from the performance and reliability statistics of engine components to how long it takes to carry out maintenance tasks, and the cost of labour. On the passenger side, agents and other intermediaries—as well as partner companies, credit card, car hire firm, and hotels—hold vast amounts of data on passengers, their purchasing patterns and their choices. The vast amount of data is not the issue. The real value and challenge of big data is how it can be analyzed to provide insights that lead to better decision-making. The prize for airlines—and for those in their supply chain that are prepared to share data and then to use data mining, data analytics, machine learning and artificial

intelligence techniques to leverage this data for commercial benefit—is an enticing one. Take the gigabytes of data per hour, primarily immediate flight and operational data provided by modern airline fleets. Some of this is captured in flight while other data is downloaded at the gate. For example, Airbus’s A350 generates 400,000 parameters (a measure of data) per flight against only 15,000 parameters for the A320. However, as the range of data captured by sophisticated avionics increases, and techniques such as machine learning, and AI (artificial intelligence) develop, so too do the potential benefits. These could include significant improvements in flight operations, reliability, fuel usage, aircraft turnaround, maintenance and safety. Data analytics plans There is clear evidence that airlines see the potential. An IATA survey in 2016 found that of those carriers with plans to enhance their IT, 73% intended to invest in data analytics, of which 94% wanted to move towards predictive maintenance and 82% planned to monitor aircraft health. For example, by keeping planes in the air rather than on the ground for mechanical reasons,

The vast amount of data is not the issue. The real value and challenge of big data is how it can be analyzed to provide insights that lead to better decision-making”

airlines could save on the ¤925,000 (US$1.14m) a day that Air China says is the cost of keeping an Airbus 380 on the ground for technical reasons. With suppliers contributing more than 60% of a typical airline’s cost base, according to McKinsey, the potential of using that data to make savings is similarly enormous. Another technique associated with big data, predictive analytics, has the capacity to solve one of airlines’ perennial problems: when to buy oil on the spot market and when to buy it on the futures market. Meanwhile, on the passenger side, there is the potential for individually tailored offerings and better customer service, giving those airlines that best grab the opportunity competitive advantage and market share. A key area where big data can make an important difference, as identified by airlines and MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) providers, is maintenance, including managing the stock of parts and spares that are vital to keep fleets flying safely. Holding such items in stock unnecessarily ties up vast amounts of capital, so it’s vital to reduce this stock and ensure the right items are in the right place at the right time.

MRO providers have a keen interest in knowing, for example, how long it takes before a particular part needs replacing, as it allows them to minimize the numbers of that part they need to hold and the length of time they need to hold it. A particularly valuable use of big data is predictive maintenance, which anticipates which components are going to fail and when, thereby allowing them to be replaced in good time. This information can also be used to improve the efficiency of engineering and maintenance workforce management. Traditionally, the provider of engine repair or overhaul services would have delivered an airline with a unit cost delivered to their warehouse. But now airlines want that cost broken down into, say, the cost of logistics and the cost of production, so they can make better informed and more strategic, rather than piecemeal, decisions when managing their supply chain.

11

Performance-based logistics Another driver for the growth of big data in the supply chain is the trend for airlines to engage in performance-based logistics contracts. Rather than holding expensive inventory of parts and spares themselves, airlines are choosing to

An IATA survey in 2016 found that of those carriers with plans to enhance their IT, 73% intended to invest in data analytics, of which 94% wanted to move towards predictive maintenance and 82% planned to monitor aircraft health

procure, as a service, more and more aspects of their aircraft maintenance and repairs. In order to provide these services and make a profit, suppliers require a lot of detailed data, such as how long it takes before a certain part has to be replaced, so they can manage their inventory more effectively. The need for in-depth data of this sort becomes even more important when, during a contract, new planes are added to the fleet or old airplanes are retired. This process is taken further by CPFR (collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment). This approach aims to enhance supply chain integration though cooperation between all parties in the supply chain, providing joint visibility of the data in that chain, and leading to greater efficiency, reduced lead times for purchasing parts, and lower stock levels. Away from maintenance and engineering, airlines’ heavy investment in their passenger loyalty schemes over many years means there is no shortage of data on this front. Perhaps the strongest example of coordination of airlines’ customer data with that held by suppliers is co-branded credit cards— such as that run by Delta and Amex—where the purchase patterns are used to help craft offers to credit card holders and frequent flyers. There is already some integration of data in airlines’ relationship with hotels, especially where

there is a preferred relationship—for example, that between Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ (part of Marriott International) Preferred Guest Programme and Delta Airlines, where customers of both companies get certain benefits. Customer profile potential However, this integration is not exactly new, and certainly doesn’t take full advantage of the power of modern computing, or the developing techniques for analyzing the data and then using machine learning or AI to develop customer profiles and to tailor offers and services accordingly. Perhaps the vertical that most easily lends itself to leveraging passenger data occurs where airlines offer a range of services, such as easyJet’s easyCar and easyHotel. Providing insight into suppliers’ performance is an emerging area where the application of big data techniques can make a difference. The use of intelligence from the wider market, to benchmark their suppliers against it, could prove a valuable tool for airlines, helping them answer the question: are they getting the service they wanted or that they paid for? Ultimately, this approach could also help an airline to choose its suppliers. On the passenger side, businesses such as Boxever, a cloud-based customer intelligence company, are already demonstrating what can be

done using big data. The company takes disparate data from airlines’ websites, reservation systems, call centres and mobile sites, and then uses machine learning and AI to tailor a more appropriate offer. Similarly, in the area of maintenance, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and MROs have made heavy investments in big data and in the software behind it. For example, as part of its Aircraft Health Monitoring system, Airbus has developed Expert, which uses real-time data to troubleshoot faults during flights so these can be remedied more quickly when the aircraft lands. Its Prognostics and Risk Management system uses sensor data to predict future failures and to help companies decide when to repair components. Aggregation across fleets Software platforms such as Rolls Royce’s, developed in collaboration with Microsoft, have existed for several years. Rolls Royce provides an aggregation of data across customers’ fleets, including snapshots of engine performance, ‘black box’-type data, technical logs and flights plans. Using machine learning and data analytics techniques, it can, for example, make recommendations based on comparing the performance of a specific part such as a pump against performance benchmarks for that pump, as to whether to replace it or not, even if it has outlasted the normal length of its usage. With examples such as this, big data has clearly arrived in the aviation supply chain. And as the big data revolution gathers pace, the sector and airlines stand on the threshold of significant change that has the potential to transform the sector. Thanks to the following for their help with this article: AT Kearney, Capgemini, ICF, Jonathan Wober Aviation Consulting, Jonex Global, PwC.

TOP TIPS FOR USING BIG DATA Here are some key tips to ensure that airlines can leverage big data and its associated technologies, tools and techniques throughout their supply chain to maximum effect: Data sharing is the key to maximising the benefit of big data in the supply chain. Carry out a cost-benefit analysis—of what you lose versus the gains—through sharing your data with a supplier’s data. Look for win-win solutions. For example, if you provide data to a supplier, try to ensure that you get something back in return, such as better servicelevel agreement performance.

13

Be careful that the contracts you sign are to your benefit as much as that of your suppliers. If you have concerns that your data could be used to improve the performance of rival airlines, then voice these concerns. Look at your own internal structures Do they make data-sharing easy or are they too siloed? Do you need to establish some cross-siloed roles? Make sure you comply with all data privacy rules. Invest in the people and teams necessary to leverage the new technologies. Digitise your records, and work to standardise your data with that of your suppliers. Look to integrate all the data a modern aircraft can produce with other sources of data, such as manuals, and engineering-related intellectual property. Keep an eye on emerging technologies, such as blockchain, that have the potential to revolutionise the supply chain. IATA Strategic Partner Special 2018

n 2017, Ryanair, with 400 airplanes flying in Europe and North Africa, flew more passengers than the Lufthansa Group, which operates 728 airplanes worldwide. Ryanair is expected to make ¤2.2 billion (US$ 2.7 billion) in profits in 2017, versus ¤2.9 billion by the Lufthansa Group. Operational factors play a major role, but why, in the 32 years Ryanair has been in business, was the Lufthansa group unable to adapt its product design and market reach to effectively compete? The speed at which an airline can adapt its offers to meet the demand in new market segments is as important, if not more important, than growing the network and buying more airplanes. Competition between airlines is no longer based on schedule and price alone. The definition of a ‘market segment’ for an airline is far more complex than it used to be. Product design, positioning, and distribution are more important today than ever, and you can no longer rely on 50-year-old technology. The technology an airline uses to offer its products and manage their delivery can no longer be delegated to third-party community models in the way this is done today. Creating a new product, and adapting a business model to impact a specific market, should be a matter of days or weeks—not years. JR Technologies has worked at an industry level with IATA to address these distribution- and delivery-related issues. We have developed industrial-grade solutions to address the need for micro-segmentation and personalization, agility in product design, speed to market, and payment solutions. If you are looking for a company that can take you from legacy to excellence, JR Technologies is the partner of choice.

viation’s role in the global economy is getting more and more important, as IATA and the airlines are recognizing. The most important innovations in the airline industries are the emergence of low-cost carriers and e-ticketing and airport processing, known as the Fast Travel initiatives. The Japanese government has launched aggressive tourism strategies which are targeted at expanding Japan-bound tourism traffic to 40 million by 2020 and 60 million by 2030. Air transport will continue to play an important role in achieving these targets. It brings opportunities for both airlines and airports. Narita Airport is also planning to build a new runway to expand to more than 1.5 times the current capacity. At the same time, we have launched the A-CDM project with airlines, to improve on-time performance. On the other hand, customer services and operational efficiency must be improved to keep growth sustainable. Automation and self-service are providing a great impact on efficiency and customer experience. The airport could accommodate more passenger traffic with less investment and generate more retail opportunities. Airlines could improve on-time performance and customer services. The Japan Civil Aviation Bureau has launched ‘Aviation Innovation Initiatives’ to improve customer experience and airport operations. Narita Airport has been carrying out Fast Travel initiatives with IATA support, but we can work with government to implement further innovations, including security and border controls. Narita Airport would be happy to work with the airlines to make successful innovations for further growth of the industries.

A

irline business models cover a wide spectrum, from ultra low-cost carriers that charge extra for everything but the seat to opulent, full-service national flagships offering butler service. Most—we expect—are enjoying the benefits of above trend-rates of passenger demand growth that the sector has now enjoyed for over six years. However, the fastest growing airlines are generally those that cater to the emerging markets, where the effects of falling fares (in real terms) and rising per capita incomes have combined to accelerate growth in passenger demand on existing routes as well as in new point-to-point connections that have yet to be served. This is most obvious at the budget end of the market. As with most segments in the airline industry, though, this is a competitive space; merely tailoring an airline’s product to the most rapidly expanding market doesn’t necessarily guarantee success. Should a full-service carrier try to become a budget player, just because LCC demand is on the rise? In our view, the answer is no. However, major flag-carrier investments in part or all of an LCC appear to be paying off, as airline groups with this strategy are capturing growth across a range of airline products.

JR Technologies Why work with us? JR Technologies is a thought leader in NDC developments from their inception and amongst the first companies to become NDC level 3 certified. Therefore, our team has in-depth knowledge, which is key in assisting airlines to transition from their current distribution strategy to an NDC-enabled one. We help the airline learn what is possible today, design a strategy, and we deliver the technology necessary for a rapid ROI. Our mission is to develop i IT solutions that allow airlines to know their passengers, predicting their passengers’ needs and the context of the trip, and allow passengers to personalize their travel experience accordingly. Our products are designed with the passenger at the center of shopping, ordering, payment, and delivery. But we do not lock airlines into an ‘off the shelf’ transformation path, because our solutions are modular. Although we deliver and end-to-end solution, the transformation of an airline’s internal and external processes can be adapted to the desired velocity. The benefits to the airlines lie in increasing the productivity of distribution channels, drastically reducing complexity and its related cost. We help you to build stronger relationships with consumers. This leads to trust, higher customer satisfaction, and loyalty.

Narita international Airport Corporation Why work with us? Narita International Airport is Japan’s premier and primary gateway, which processes almost 50% of the nation’s international traffic. Since we have achieved expansion of airport capacity to 300,000 annual slots, new routes have been developed and new airline partners have joined. We also opened the new terminal 3 in April 2015 for low-cost carriers. To meet the region’s vigorous demand, we have kicked off discussions with local communities and JCAB for further expansion of the airport. To meet the region’s vigorous growth, Narita airport will construct a third runway to expand its capacity to more than 1.5 times the current capacity. The operational hours will be also planned to extend from the current 6am to 11pm. Under intensifying competition, partnerships between airlines and airports are becoming more and more important. We are keen to implement IATA’s Fast Travel initiatives such as the self-bag drop function and the Smart Security program. We are working closely with airlines at Narita to find the best solutions for improving the customer experience and making operations even more efficient. Narita is always striving to build on its status as one of East Asia’s key international gateways.

JR TECHNOLOGIES George Khairallah, President E george@jrtechnologies.com W www.jrtechnologies.com T +30 282-100-8700 A 255 Leoforos Karamanli Str., Chania – 73200, Greece JR Technologies is currently investing in a pilot program to demonstrate that ONE Order is not as difficult or as far away as some might claim. Our pilot will

follow the NDC shop, order, pay, and ONE Order delivery and revenue accounting (RAS) processes. We will use our NDC platform to process offers with rich media and merchandising capability, and we will write the orders to our order management system. We will not create any PNRs, issue tickets, or EMDs. In partnership with a DCS provider, we will

integrate DCS functionality into order management, and manage the delivery status of every order item purchased. The resulting transactions will update the airline’s RAS. The solution will be presented at the Airline Industry Retailing Symposium in Rome, on October 23 - October 25. Come and see first-hand what JR Technologies can do for your business.
