Second, I expect to see even more mobile applications and better-use cases in recruitment. Lastly, I see a trend in analytics tools that can combine different data sources and provide a better insight into your recruitment efforts. Jason Starr, managing director, Dillistone Systems The recruitment software market is being hit by a double whammy. Brexit is changing the economics of the sector and that, combined with the rapid approach of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, means that many vendors are going to be stretched. This is likely to lead to a “flight to safety”. Buyers are more likely to purchase from the larger vendors that have the economic strength to invest during what is likely to be a turbulent period. Paul Thompson, sales director, Voyager Whilst there is much doom-mongering about [US president-elect Donald] Trump and Brexit, the reality is that good or bad there will be an opportunity for recruiters to make a mark. If you are planning for growth in 2017 you’ll need to look forward at the opportunities, not just how you made money in the past. Micro-niche is my tip for 2017.

WHAT FUNCTIONALITY WILL BE ON RECRUITERS’ WISH-LISTS? CB: Tools for managing the sales pipeline with the ease of use of modern drag-anddrop card systems like Trello. And self-service dashboards and analytics – enabling everyone to measure exactly what’s important to them. Standard reports rarely meet customer needs and third party analytics tools are often expensive and difficult to maintain. TC: All-encompassing CRM software enabling recruiters to exceed their usual job requirements will be top of the list. When looking for talent, knowing the person better and having the information competitors don’t will be pivotal to success. Management reporting must be strong enough to tangibly enhance business strategy. Therefore, features for searching and reporting need to transcend their expected user experience to quickly become second nature. AF: We expect to see recruiters continue to consolidate suppliers [and] rely on one single provider who can provide all their

software needs (for recruitment, payroll and finance), naturally reducing spend and saving time. DF: A consultant’s time is best spent building relationships with clients and candidates. Technology should support this by making all the other stuff easier, by reducing admin, and making processes simple and efficient. GdL: Customers are going to want features around mass recruiting. This could include features where applicants can apply for jobs without having to login. Likewise, they’ll want tools that make applications fast and simple, ie. applicants can send a CV through their mobile and film themselves speaking to a camera, instead of a formal CV and cover letter. They will also want the ability to have different career sites depending on the type of candidate, using social media to share positions and boost candidate referrals.

Also CRM tools that go beyond emailing, allowing recruiters to get in contact with the candidate, connected to their CRM, search, matching and sourcing tools, will be high on the wish list. JS: There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The one thing all buyers should be thinking about is the vendor. Recruitment software is for life, not just for Christmas, and so the long-term ability of the vendor to maintain and develop the product should be just as important as the functionality of the product itself.

PL: Radical transparency will be key. Those agencies with the ability to gain real-time insights into their client and candidate relationships and processes will be the ones that make better and more informed business decisions, placements and ultimately more sales. To achieve this, software must be developed with a more open, transparent approach to data firmly in mind.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES FOR DEVELOPERS AND RECRUITERS IN 2017? CB: Cutting through the hype and resisting the temptation to jump on the latest bandwagon just to tick a box. If you hear the words ‘disruptive’, ‘predictive’, ‘machinelearning’ be sceptical and find out if there is any real substance beneath the surface. History shows that disillusionment is likely to follow before we get real productivity.

GM: Recruiters need good tools that help them source candidates or even automate

DF: We are obsessive about giving recruiters tools that make their lives easier and more productive. Our challenge is to make technology work intelligently, so it frees the consultant from traditional burdens and empowers them to spend more time on business development and placements. PL: The natural changeability of the recruitment industry, which is both a challenge and an opportunity. The rise of the contingent workforce stands to chiefly alter how people work and recruit. The challenge is adapting products to these new circumstances. The opportunity is the ability to prove we’re the best at listening and responding to the needs of the market. GdL: We continue to push the message that recruiting, just like learning, is an element of a more global human capital management strategy. So, if you’re a recruiter, you should look beyond recruiting. It starts with recruiting and onboarding, but continues with intelligent performance management

and mobility. Many firms still have a siloed recruitment department; recruitment is one level in the overall human capital management strategy. GM: The challenges for developing new recruitment software is to make sure new tools can be connected to existing software. Recruiters should be able to combine the bestof-breed solutions and make effective use of the data they already have. The challenge for recruiters is to be adaptive to these changes and new technology. Software vendors must make good software, as easily understandable as possible; recruiters must then try it out and give it a chance to make their jobs easier. JS: Ironically, our biggest challenge is recruiting and retaining staff. This year we’ve seen a doubling in demand for certain products and our challenge has been to handle this demand without dropping standards. It’s not always easy and we’ve had to hire additional people for our business here in the UK, in the US and in Australia. PT: Recruitment moves fast. To keep our recruiters at the top of their game, we need them to look at how things may be done in the future, not how they’ve been done in the past. One of our greatest challenges is hiring recruitment visionaries that can focus on the technical horizon, while paying homage to the recruiters’ footprints.
